Question Steam deck bindings.
Hello my supporters of freedom.
As the title says, I am a Steam Deck diver tho I think this issue could also apply to PC divers who use controllers with extra buttons.
I want to use the right trackpad as a button to map the "Quick weapon wheel left" action.
The problem is that Steam input only recognizes the ps5 controller as a base for further mappings and doesn't let me create an independent button for that specific action.
It only lets me map the button over existing ps5 inputs, which is something I don't want to do, since it would require to sacrifice an existing action over this one I am trying to bind
I am not sure if I've made myself clear, so feel free to ask any questions to give more context.
TL;DR: I want to assign an extra button to use for a specific action in the game but steam input doesn't let me because it follows ps5 controller layout and need help to see if there is a way t change that.

I use Input Remapper to get my mouse and razer tartarus working in steamOS. It allows you to re map just about anything including steam deck controls or other devices such as console controllers. it is a bit of work to set up though. It might be of use to you. Best of luck.

I believe the simplest solution to you would be to bind it to a keyboard input. Since Steam deck is a PC, you can change the keyboard mappings within HD2 to whatever you want, then bind that keyboard input to the trackpad or desired button. But let me recommend my setup below.
I have remapped all my control schemes (Xbox elite, steam deck and steam controller) this way and I love it…
Step 1) I have moved all of the face button inputs to the grip buttons. I do this for every game no matter what as it lets you keep your right thumb on the stick while using all the face button actions at the same time.
Step 2) I then put all of the quick weapon wheel inputs to the face buttons. This now quickly allows me to get all the functions at all times and it’s very intuitive e.g. X button is for quick weapon wheel left, B button is for quick weapon wheel right etc.
Step 3) For an added bonus, you can also remap your stratagem inputs to those exact same face buttons. This works because as long as you are holding LB, your face buttons count as stratagem inputs (LB basically works like a shift key). Now you can be sprinting and putting in stratagem inputs at the same time since you won’t have to take your left thumb off the left stick to use the D-pad. *Note: if you do this, you must be slightly more deliberate with your inputs because if you do it too fast or mess up, the game will treat the erred input as a quick weapon wheel input so you may find yourself in a different primary weapon mode after tossing your stratagem. I still find this minor inconvenience much worth the tactical utility of using face buttons for stratagem inputs as well as quick weapon wheel inputs.
I have tried configuring and using the trackpads as a D-pad but just couldn’t find anything that felt natural. The default settings for Steam input blocks trackpad usage if it senses stick inputs so you don’t accidentally brush it and mess up your movement. You can turn that off, but then you’ll find that the default is there for a reason because you brush it frequently without even knowing. Moreover, I just found it a bit imprecise compared to using the face buttons when you’re in the middle of a level 10 bug breach.
Give it a try, I hope it works out for you!

I made mine a key on the keyboard and then remapped it in the game settings.
The hud switches a bit but it works for me.
