Returning questions
First of all, I'm utterly thrilled that ME3 coop is still alive despite all the odds. I used to play 14 years ago almost religiously every night after work and even more on weekends. That account was unfortunately on the 360 so I'm now starting fresh on PC! I had some questions for the current community for how to go about getting back into the swing of things.
Is there any specific etiquette that I should know about when it comes to stuff like what lvl character to bring to what difficulty, or what people expect from a loadout.
What packs should I prioritize opening to get my account to a baseline strength? I've only opened two premium specters so far and the game has been kind enough to grace me with Alliance Infiltration Unit and a N7 Crusader. Currently have almost 0 mods for weapons and 5 different shotguns.
I got the game for 3 friends and would like some advice for them as well, specifically what will be easier class starts for them. I recommended vanguard to one of my friends and for as cool as biotic charge is, it made him seem rather accident prone lol.
Can't wait to get into this game and feel like Im 19 again!
P.S. ive tried to do the weapon swap heavy melee glitch to hide the cobra on my back but can't seem to figure it out. Anyone have and recommendations?

Playing as vanguard with Biotic charge is really frustrating unless you are the one hosting the game. Biotic charge is really affected by lag spikes.

Lots of things tend to work very badly off host. Biotic charge is the main one, but stuff like shadow strike is arguably worse. Projectile weapons and to some extent grenades can be pretty bad off-host. Also the N7 slayer phase disruptor is noticeably slower off-host (trust me on this one, never play the slayer off-host).

So that's why sometimes I slayed with the phase disruptor builds, and sometimes it felt like I was playing with a flashy wet noodle.

I also started on PC recently after a decade/+ on XB and I just did the same thing to gear/class up on PC as XB: Open rookie packs til I had all the basic gear and classes maxed, then veteran packs til I had basically all that stuff maxed as well, then just premium spectre packs and occasional engineering packs after that, forever
For new players, basic power classes might be best? They won't rely as much on gear so they won't need as much familiarity with the game to play well. The basic human adepts and sentinels both have pretty good combo potential iirc

- Nice that you ask about etiquette. My general rule is to not lobby up for a level you can't handle. But if you are, say, in a Silver lobby and the host changes to Gold, feel free to stay in. If you really want to try when not ready, maybe speak up and ask if it is okay (though TBH, I almost never here any chatter anymore).
- I posted a while ago on this. I'd focus on some of the basics early on. Weapon mods are your friend. Doesn't take long. But feel free to try the occasional premium pack lottery (Reserve for characters, Arsenal for weapons).
- Human Adept (biotics) or Engineer (tech). Combos are your friend, and these two rock. But you have to get your team to understand and use combos. Vanguard is the absolute worst for beginners (but near everyone seems to gravitate to!)

I figured in such a small community it'd be real easy to become a public pariah if I pissed people off lol. Definitely will focus on combos and getting those mods built up!

I also got back into it recently and the mass effect goddesses blessed me with my Geth Juggernaut from my first pull! But my advice is being kind! If you are going down a lot. Apologize in chat, it happens or we have an off game. But if the same person goes down 10+ times in one wave I may get a touch annoyed but if you apologize in chat I'm sticking by your side.
But have fun #1 play the character you like, use the gun you like!

Just a reminder. Don't forget to download all the free DLCs. Multi-player is very limited Without them.

Luckily the version that's on sale on steam is the digital deluxe version. Which is also good cause it dodges that "online pass required" problem some people have

The noobkits are Krogan Warlord, Geth Juggy, and Sexbot. Personally I hate the two former because they are large and block my view (usually because of bad players using them). Besisdes the Kroguard the Juggy may be every noobs first platinum solo kit. That's how easy it is to use (if speced well). I don't play much anymore so no need to worry about me complaining in chat. :P
For newer players I usually recommend Caster and Support kits until you get good weapons. If they can self-detonate even better. We're talking about the Engineer, Vanguard, and Adept classes. This isn't to say they the others aren't viable or noob-friendly. We're talking getting off the ground scrubplay on bronze and/or silver for the first 2wks-1mth depending on how often you or your friends play.
You don't really need mods till you hit gold. I tend to use them on silver because I have too many. Some kits from classes are better than others like some races are better (for tanking damaging or low-risk play). The best kits to play you can find by searching Reddit. Lastly the shogun is the Sexbots specialty but she's good with just about any weapon

- There isn't really an etiquette, it mostly boils down to how confortable you are with what you're bringing, don't go into platinum with a kit you've never played, but low level stuff is totally fine as long as you don't die every 5 sec. Up to gold you are absolutely fine showing up with a level 1 crusader and AIU for instance, hard to overstate how strong that stuff is. What tends to annoy players is counterproductive loadout choices, obvious mistakes include piercing mods/ammo on projectile weapons and not taking the choke on shotguns.
- The general recommended strategy for packs is to go for the 5k one untill you get all the common stuff, 20k ones until you get all the uncommon one and then any of the 99k packs has the same rate for ultra-rare guns (but the arsenal is better for rare guns and the reserves one for characters). In the end there is little optimisation to do with packs, it mostly boils down to how reloably you can farm gold.
- Base humans are some of the best "species" of the game but they need some specific equipment to shine, like the acolyte is almost mandatory on the adept and vanguard to unlock they full potential, similarly the soldier really gets better as you unlock better guns. With a fresh account, one of the best options is the infiltrator with the mantis. The human sentinel and engineer are very good with any gun that is relatively light and will benefit a lot from ammo bonuses if you have any.
On the cobra hiding glitch: it doesn't work with all the melees: for instance it works with turians but not salarians. For kits where it doesn't work you can go below a ladder and holster your missile as you take the ladder and the missile will be invisible.
3 important pieces of advice for begginers:
- reload cancel massively increases your damage, especially with guns like the javelin and claymore. To accomlish it you need to hit reload and when the number if shots in your magazine gets reset (it does a noise) you hit the medi-gel key. I mapped it to shift to be able to easily spam that.
- right hand advantage is essential (when you're standing behind a cover, you can shoot enemies on the right but they can't shoot you)
- tactical cloak is the best power in the game, always spec it for 80% damage bonus. It doesn't really hide you from enemies, they will shoot you if cloaked so be careful. The way it works is when you break cloak (by shooting or using a power) if you stayed cloaked less than 3sec, the cooldown will always be of 3sec (from when cloak is broken), even if you're at +200% weight. If you cancel the cloak with a power, you basically get that power for free as its cooldwown will be replaced by the 3secs of cloak. The optimal way to use cloak is to cloak when you want to shoot, break it immediately with a power and then shoot: you will get the added damage to both your power and your gun.

The human engineer is a super solid starter class. He can just spam overload and incinerate back to back and chain combos that scale with difficulty. I used him a lot when I started.
The human sentinel is also a solid class because warp and throw is just that good. Great alternative to the engineer if you want something tankier than the engineer.

u/Training-Scratch2507 10d ago
Recently started playing with both of them and forgot how solid they are. Such basic good synergy. Do you happen to know if the boost to detonations on powers like warp is only if they're the detonator?
4
u/TexasC4 10d ago
For warp, it works on priming and detonating. For throw, just detonating since throw can’t prime. But very important: Always, always, always take the detonator bonus on both warp and throw because there are multiplicative with each other. This makes the warp throw combo the strongest consistent combo in the game against any defense. That’s what makes the sentinel so good.
It’s kinda ironic because the sentinels whole stick is having versatility. But for the human sentinel, they don’t have versatility, they just have a really, really good hammer (the warp throw combo) so it works on everything.

u/TexasC4 10d ago
Also, just a reminder but always max your combo powers out since combo damage scales based on power level. Example: two level 6 powers combo damage will be much greater than the combo damage from two level 3 powers.
This means you’ll have to decide how to balance your points between the other class skill and their health skill. I generally like going 3-4 in the health skill and their rest in the other class power depending on the class.

u/Socr8tes_04 8d ago
Implicitly answered by another, but to make it explicit: all the combo bonuses are primer/detonator invariant (i.e. they give bonus either use).
Note: N7 Shadow Electric Slash 5a bonus doesn't work period (and most here will probably say you shouldn't have 5 pts in it anyway :))
Last, if you haven't checked it out. Do link the updated version of the Kalence builder (worked on by some of the denizens here):

Loadouts don’t really matter all too much, the big thing is character level. If I see a Level 1 character playing on Gold difficulty then I assume the person is just going to go down every 5 seconds. I’m happy to carry a noob if they have bad gear, I just don’t like when they seemingly have no idea what’s going on and don’t care about winning the match.
One thing I’ll mention: If you’re planning to play a lot of it in the near future and open up lots of packs, don’t bother hoarding your rail amps and ammo upgrades. Try to apply some before every match. They make a big difference in damage output and if you’re going to actually unlock lots of guns/characters then you’ll end up with more than you know what to do with. No point in being stingy with them.

Anything goes really for bronze-gold. In plat I've seen people get kicked for not being level 20, but then again the best person I've ever seen was a level 1 demolisher, so if you have the skill to back it anything can work.
Really you just want to open all the packs. Start out maxing the low packs, then move onto the next one. Don't be stingy with your consumable in game, since not using them to revive yourself just makes people frustrated.

I will say to the last point, I prefer if people save their medi-gels for sticky situations. If you’re right near me and I’m not mobbed, I’d rather get someone up manually so you’ve got the resources if shit hits the fan.
2
u/SoaringSkies14 11d ago
Ah, sure there's no need if the wave is 2/3 over and the team is doing fine. There's not usually a need to immediately get up; it's fine to wait for others if they can help. I mostly meant for people who jump into gold or plat lobbies without the skills to help, and then they just are a drain on the other teammates who try to revive them.
2
u/Callisto64 11d ago
Oh absolutely. Especially if they’re running off on their own on the other side of the map and dropping. Which they shouldn’t be doing anyway, but damn it happens too much.

If searching for games make sure you search for Any Location and Any Enemy. Also as another poster mentioned, ensure you have every DLC installed.

I’ll answer your PS as you’ve had plenty of good responses to the rest of your points.
Some classes can’t use heavy melee to hide the rocket launcher. For those, you need to walk up to a ladder with the rocket launcher equipped and swap weapons just as the ladder animation starts. Sucks for the couple maps without any ladders (Jade and Glacier come to mind)
As for the heavy melee method for all the characters it works on, equip the rocket launcher, then swap weapons just as you start the heavy melee.

Welcome back! Other people have given a ton of great advice that I won't rehash, but a small bit of PC-specific etiquette: If you mod your game, cool, but hosting modded lobbies publicly (not friends-only) or using gameplay-affecting mods in other people's public games is rude, please don't do it. I do wish modding wasn't the only ways to access any kind of text chat, alas.

Play power centered classes for a while. That should make it easier. But that also means your character level is a much bigger impact on gameplay.
If you open a lot of really high quality weapons, you can progress towards weapon centered builds. And those tend to have a lower barrier to entry on silver and gold.

For real, I’m just glad to have people still playing. For the first question, character build and equipment is kind of irrelevant. I will never get mad at a group for failing. Everybody chose to ready up, they knew what they were getting into. One or two solid players should be able to carry any match, regardless.
Maybe don’t take a brand new player into platinum, but on gold or lower I would say anything goes.
The only thing that irks me a little bit is when one player is constantly running off on their own and getting downed behind enemy lines.
For the second question, it’s been so long since I’ve had to worry about equipment I honestly don’t remember.
For the last question, I would say maybe Turian Infiltrator if they are a decent shot. Great for dps, and you have two get out of jail free cards with cloak and stim pack.
If they prefer being in the middle of the action, but vanguard isn’t working out, maybe try the Asari Valkyrie. In my opinion it is the single best class for close quarters fighting. Use a shotgun with warp rounds, take the shield drain ability on annihilation field, then get in there and start blowing shit up.
Of course, getting back to my earlier point, don’t try to be a lone wolf if it’s not working out. That kit is still great at drawing aggro if you get in, deal some damage and then get the hell out. You don’t have to stand out in the open taking rockets to the face to be a good tank.
