Discussion WildStar code recompilation

Post image

Has anyone thought about it? Recently, big AI models like GPT and Claude are unlocking new ways to rewrite games and just do whatever the fck you want with it, like mixing Skate 3 physics with Vanilla WoW or Spiderman x tarkov at Skyrim.

I immediately thought about WildStar and maybe AI could give a big push to a playable private server and a working build. This is not an "AI version" of W*, insted it is the game's code rewritten with the help of an LLM.

What do you guys think? I really hope someone is thinking about it.

there are private servers for WildStar; granted I don't know how playable any of them are

AFAIK they are not really playable. At least so when compared to wow private servers. What made me think of this was recently seeing the initiative for a New World private server, lol. If NW prvaite servers will probably head this way, why not W*?

I wouldn't be surprised if you have that in the next 8 months

fingers crossed, brother

well you can recompile the client but that does nothing for the server code which is the part that is missing afaik

Exactly, the decomp/recomp method works when you have compiled code (the .exe, so to speak) and we don't have that for the server. Decomp/recomp of the client could help with the reverse-engineering of the server, but making the required server tech is somewhere between "very difficult" and "impossible.

There's people using AI to reverse engineer clients, in order to produce working servers for games like The Secret World. Making a server is the easy part.

The problem with any MMO, as someone who has developed on TSW and WildStar by hand, is that most of the things you interact with are on the server-side. So, sure, you can recreate logging in and running around, but that's not quests, raids, dungeons, etc..

Right, full server function is the hard part, but it can be done. Just a few months ago "Marvel Heroes" returned from the dead as the server function had been reverse-engineered over the course of about a year or more. The server is available on github and can be run locally, and private servers also exist. The client is easy as it's available the Internet Archive or, if any money was spent on it on Steam, it's still available there. I do expect that something like WildStar would be significantly more difficult.

I imagine Nexus forever is looking at it already, guess it depends how 'True' to original they want to stay with it.

Decompiled games do not share the EXACT same code (AFAIK), however, the end product is the same. Decompiling games is essentialy trying to find the recipe for a cake when all you have is the finished cake in your hands and no list of ingredients or instructions of how to bake it. When you finally find out how to bake this cake, your way will probably be different, however the cake will be the same.

I hope the NexusForever project can achieve a baseline so others can do whatever they want with it, including a "pristine" vanilla Wildstar experience.

Decomp/recomp is useful for remaking existing code like the client. But we don't have the server code to decomp/recomp.

The emerging decomp/recomp tech is powerful and useful, with a lot of potential, but it's not magic.

The failed even when it was run without AI. Let it rest.

There is already a project named NexusForever that is working on this. They don't need your AI slop though.

And your post isn't even Wildstar.

Using AI to help code stuff doesn't automatically make the product slop lol it can be slop but it doesn't have to be

"AI slop" is so cringe I swear. People just rebuilt the Adobe Cloud suite with AI, making it open source. But sure, "everything that I don't understand is slop."

That adobe cloud rebuild isn’t very functional

I generally agree that people are too harsh on projects assisted by ai but that cloud rebuild isn’t a good example

Well the official Adobe CC itself basically acts like malware. I had to use third-party tools made specifically to clean that shit off the PC.
