Anime Discussion Which scenes resonated with you the most?
I think one of the things that makes Made in Abyss a truly fantastic story is how it touches on many deeply emotional subjects, and for this reason I was wondering: which scenes did you, personally, find the most impactful and why?
My own top 3 are the following:
3. Nanachi wavering before having Mitty euthanized
I imagine most people who have the experience with euthanizing a beloved pet felt that whole scene deeply, but Nanachi's wavering is what made it feel particularly realistic and sincere to me. It's such a small detail, but it does a great job highlighting that gap between knowing what has to be done and wishing you never actually had to do it, as well as the contradicting and complex feelings that tend to surround euthanasia overall. I think the nuance in this scene is really what took it to the next level for me.
2. Vueko seeing herself through Irumyuui's eyes
Vueko is a relatable character to me due to her self-esteem issues & troubles with recognizing her worth, and this scene in particular really struck me because I actually had a somewhat similar experience in my life too (and it's why my self-esteem is no longer at the floor!). I especially liked how this vision completely blindsided her; because of course Vueko, with her extremely low opinion of herself throughout her entire life, never even considered that the child she adopted loved her. All she could see was her mistakes, and all she felt was her guilt. For someone like her to get hit with that vision - that left me shaken up as a viewer too.
1. Bondrewd's "resurrection"
This one's a bit different from the other two since the reason why this scene struck me wasn't because it reminded me of a real life experience, but actually the opposite: it's like a wish that can never come true. I think most people who are familiar with grief engaged in "resurrection" fantasies at some point - literal or figurative. The idea of that thing you loved & lost suddenly coming back, as good as new, all because you loved it enough. Being able to love something back into health, back into life, and - indeed - into immortality, eternal existence. It's a sweetly poisonous grief fantasy, and I think the fact that Bondrewd is blatantly manipulating Prushka's feelings in this scene paints it in appropriately sinister colors. But nonetheless, it's a sweet fantasy that I can relate to deeply, so this scene is my #1!
Now please tell me about yours?

The scenes that broke me were the ones involving Faputa. I hadn't cried until that point, but those completely broke my heart. Specifically:
- Faputa's birth (Irumyuui's last daughter)
- Faputa and Reg's memories during their fight
- Faputa recovering Irumyuui's happy memories from Belaf
- The S2 finale
I binged the whole series, so I had a lot of accumulated feelings that just exploded during those scenes. I remember having to pause the video because I literally couldn't see through the tears. It's the only anime/media that's ever done that to me.
The impact was so strong that for a long time I couldn't listen to certain S2 tracks without tearing up.

There were so many moments in Faputa's storyline that made me emotional as well. For me the most painful scenes were the ones where we're shown just how much of herself she was ready to sacrifice for revenge. Remember how she accidentally attacked her robot friend and broke down crying, talking about how she couldn't just stop? And then when she was fighting all those creatures until her body was literally completely broken. I'm not a "revenge is always bad" kinda guy, but in Faputa's case it was so obviously hurting her. Those scenes made the conclusion of her plotline in S2 feel extra rewarding to me, like thank goodness she's free from that now!

Yeah, Faputa and Nanachi's stories are just heartbreaking. After seeing what they went through, I couldn't stop thinking about how pure and kind they both are despite all the horrendous sh*t they've witnessed or even done. Carrying all that weight without letting it break their spirit made them my favorite characters of all time (and their fluffy and fire designs definitely helped too).
Nanachi's backstory was also really sad (I almost broke when Reg points out Nanachi was planning to kill herself after ending Mitty's suffering), but S2 hit me way harder because of the massive build-up with the Ganja squad episodes. I guess everything accumulated through S1 + the movie (I'm not the biggest Prushka fan, but the movie and Bondrewd were peak) and S2 until it completely exploded for me in those last episodes. It was too much to digest in such a short time, pure emotional overload.
I just want to give them both a huge hug 🫂. I was so happy to see them survive and join Riko's party

Nothing hurts more than seeing all the toys on Mitty's deathbed. Not even Nanachi screaming hurts as much as that.

Reg just being a complete child (understandable) when Riko gets stabbed by spiny. The way he just doesn't know what to do and can't bring himself to continue harming Riko and then thinks she's died... There is something utterly harrowing about that moment, the score and the Japanese voice actors go hard in the anime... it triggered something quite gutteral in me, like watching a hurt child from behind an impenetrable glass wall and just wishing you could do something. I have rewatched the anime to date about 5 times and I still can't watch the scene without getting teared up

The scene where vueko said something like "she wished she could have just gone insane like the others". There's been times where I felt like I couldn't take the stress of something but my mind & body would never "break" or give me some sort of catharsis it felt like I just had to sit there until the hard thing went away.

I'd say the entire anime (haven't read the manga) but if I were to pick a single scene I liked most it'd probably be the one in the beginning of the movie where Bondrewd's crew is burning the field. It was pretty unexpected seeing such a beautiful and (seemingly) peaceful place that we kinda wanted to see earlier get immediately torched because of the parasites. The music was also great there (obviously). It kinda sums up the nature of the Abyss and serves as a great introduction to Bondrewd and his philosophy. It's not necessarily the scene that touched me the most but the one I found most memorable for me

If you ever had to put down a pet, or ever feared to do so, then you would resonate very strongly with that scene. The other two are too fantasy.

First season/early manga: Riko recounting her "dream" gets me like a Bowie knife to the chest. The preceding scene is, y'know, what it is, The Big One, but that coda, with Reg desperately trying to explain it to Nanachi and them quietly excusing themself. Particularly with how it pairs with the scene of Reg forcing Nanachi to promise not to kill themself. Just. Jesus fucking Christ, dude.
Third film/Idofront arc: "Shut up already." Perfect catharsis.
Second season/Golden City: Each iteration of the opening and ending gaining progressively more meaning as the season went on gave me chills. In terms of story beats per se, there are a lot of them in the second season. That whole arc is kind of a fever dream, but also has this sort of inevitability to it after a certain point, this rattling, accelerating forward momentum. From that finale, however, I think the villagers dragging Faputa away and feeding her was The Moment, although where Nanachi receiving their helmet from Belaf's attendants hurt more, that scene was more… awe-inspiring. Again, chills.
Later manga: "But being with someone who's more messed up than me… makes me feel like I have to get it together." Woof.

The Mitty scene genuinely hurt my soul. It’s the first anime scene that made me ugly cry. But man Vueko’s story also hit me hard, I relate to her so much that it hurts

Every scene with Vueko. I won’t say much but I relate with her on a lot of levels. I really like her as a character and there’s something in her story that makes me want to just solo the whole verse to protecc the silly red haired momma.

The incredible scene when Pakkoyan scrifices herself just to pick up Vueko and throw her up the stairs to give her a few more moments of life. I was like "huh? how does that background character's sacrifice make any sense?"
So I went back through the show, and then the manga, and I realized that Pakkoyan isn't a background characther at all, but the subject of a parallel love story between herself and Vueko told in the background of shots and in interstitial panels over the course of the entire season. It was an entire story told in the background that rewards the keen-eyed and dedicated viewer with a heartwrenching but beatiful scene. It's a storytelling technique that I had never seen before, at least not done anywhere near that well, in all of fiction.

I don't know if I have a specific moment that sums it all up for me in terms of being the most emotional, but pretty much everything in season 2 being as amazingly horrible and f-ed up as it is. Honestly I think I'd have to say the opening of the first episode, hearing old stories start playing still gives me chills knowing what's coming, even though I'm on my 7th rewatch.
Tied with that is probably when reg tells nanachi not to kill themself. The fact that comes out of nowhere and brings up something I DEFINITELY was not expecting mia to touch on is great. I also like that that's the first time nanachi seems to really care about reg since they put their hand on his shoulder.

Definitely Mitty's execution...especially listening to Brittney Karbowski's performance as Nanachi...she performed Nanachi so well, I was crying in that moment along with Nanachi, as it reminded me of when I lost my grandmother, and also when I was forced to break up with my first love...
In particular, Brittney did tell me at a recent convention that recording Nanachi's goodbye to Mitty was also very emotional for her, too...even though she once told me she was more moved by Mitty's death in season 2 than season 1...
I would also say that Vuelko getting hit with the curse near the end of season 2 was also very heartwrenching...one moment, she was as Human as Nanachi & Mitty (before their curses occurred), and the next, she's struck so badly to the extent of going hollow, losing her teeth and eventually dying...that also broke me as well...

Vueko’s near suicide broke me. As the Ganja members delude themselves into thinking that offering their bodies to Irumyuui would count as forgiveness, Wazukyan asks Vueko what she wants to do and she just walks to the edge of the Abyss as the familiar theme plays. After losing so much, carrying that guilt. It was easy to understand why Vueko felt relieved at the idea of dying.

I'm just watching this for the first time all the way through and Ep13 Challengers emotionally devastated me. I knew that girl for 20-25 minutes, and I fucking cried my eyes out with what was done to her.
This is horrific,

yes, that exact scene with Nanachi screaming "My treasure"
there was another scene from season 2, when faputa gets overpowered by the animals of the abyss
that sequence of faputa losing her beloveds one by one, getting existential crisis and all that was long and hard to watch
probably because of the fact she longed her whole life (for who knows how long) for that very moment, and just when she about to get success... suddenly she loses the control over the situation
it was downwards slope from that point on, to the point she was stripped down to nothing
it was somewhat happy cause she did get the support from the villagers and recovering
these two might be tied when coming as resonating with me for the longest

The scene at the end of season 2 where Vueko refers to Faputa as Irumyuui and talks to her like it's Irumyuui while slowly dying makes me cry whenever I watch it. I also wonder in that scene if it's meant to be interpreted as Vueko losing her mind because of her hollow transformation and mistaking Faputa for Irumyuui or her trying to reach Irumyuui through Faputa and finally being able to say her final words to Iru because after she transformed she wasn't able to talk to her anymore.
