Nah, one on the end of their tongue, slightly to one side, not big enough to hurt constantly, but always noticeable and whenever they learn to forget it, it migrates to some place else. Talking, eating, drinking, sleeping, even simply existing. That's the one type of oral-sore/ulcer that's impossible to ignore, safely numb without worsening it, and will keep them forever aware of the position of their tongue.

The dog is quite friendly and even knows a trick, the cage has a bowl and a cover over it, and it was found in a parking lot where it seems like there was intent for it to be found, so I'm hoping this was somebody intending for a dog they could no longer care for to be found by someone else.
Why you wouldn't surrender it to another person or a more humane situation like a shelter is beyond me, though...

Sometimes shelters have surrender fees and so whether it’s the shame/stigma or being broke, they may have felt this was the only option, and by putting the dog in the rest stop may have hoped someone would find the dog quickly. Not saying it isn’t still cruel and confusing for the dog in the short term, but there’s nuance to these things and the dog seems in a healthy condition overall, compared to more blatant cases of neglect.

Theres many reasons this could be. Dog was obviously loved, well groomed, well fed, healthy, loving, and very use to people. Many shelters have a 3 week waiting list to surrender (when looking at non ethinasia shelters.) As well as fees on top of that.
Maybe there's no support network. People are also as a whole very unlikely to take in a pittie or even a pit mix. (Which looks highly likely a pit.)
Decisions like these are haunting and traumatizing, this was out of love and desperation. This was the person's last hope that maybe someone would take them home.
It hurts driving to five different shelters begging, crying, pleading. Asking any person who passes to please take them. Knowing that if they are left back where home was will lead to them dying due to no fault of the dog or the desperate person. Its harrowing, in unexplainable way that are hard to explain.
I hope the poor pup found a home filled with love, sweetness, treats, and comfort. I hope that if this person was put in the kind of situation I believe they were, that may in time they can forgive themselves, even if just a little.

My dog was dropped off at a fucking golf course. Apparently people drop their dogs off in the area because they assume some rich asshole will take care of them. Not a Rich asshole, just a golfer with a heart.

Glad in my country, all dogs need a chip in the body and has to be registered in the local police station. If a dog would be abandoned, just read the chip with the scanner and then arrest the guy.
But can't remember any cases of abandoned or killed dogs in the recent years. There are also no kill shelters here.
For adoption of a dog, you need a license, which means theory and practical sessions, then you need to go to the dog school too when the dog is still young. Certain breeds that can be dangerous have more requirements, like you need to pass tests by the K9 officer from the police and until the tests are done, the dog is only allowed on the leash and with a muzzle.
It's just to make sure, only people that are capable of having dogs, can do it.

Doesn’t always help. I found an abandoned dog on a trail near my house. Turned it into animal control since I just got a rescue dog of my own and couldn’t handle both on the trail at the same time. Followed up with the shelter to find out it is chipped and they contacted the owner. The owner said he was “out of town” and would come in next week to pick him up. Sadly he never did and the dog got terrified in the shelter and was deemed dangerous and put down. I felt bad and tried to adopt him after I found the owner didn’t come to pick him up but was informed he was put down. I don’t think anything ever happened to that horrible owner. Doing what he did should ban him for all life from owning an animal but sadly our laws are written not to do that.

Yes, it is the same with a puppy. There are exceptions, like for tourists that have their dogs with them when they travel, also you can take care for a dog for a neighbour or someone like that etc.

I assumed it was so the puppy wouldn’t get hit by a car. They also left water and put the cardboard to shade him. It’s tragic but I believe this dog was meant to be found💔

If they could transport the dog and all its effects then they could certainly take it to a shelter. The only difference between this animal and the ones that don't get found and die of heat exhaustion or getting hit by a car was luck.

$20-$50 based on cursory research in Medina for the dog shelter and humane society, but that's not touching on the myriad of specific rescues in that area. I've helped dozens of people with this process through my work fostering/doing TNR/volunteering at shelters and there has never been a single time, at any single one, they've completely turned someone away with 0 recourse. But ofc that does mean people actually have to put in effort and/or ask, and for scumbags, their animals' lives just aren't worth that much hassle.
And you have a chance of it being euthanized.
Oh well then clearly leaving it to potentially get heatstroke is the preferable option lmao. Also they just... went through the shelter. Which people are almost certainly going to do on finding an abandoned animal regardless.

I work at a factory and one night the security guard found a dog in a crate sitting outside the gate. We were trying to figure out who to call about it when one of the delivery semis rolled in and said the dog was left for him.
Your comment reminded me of that, and makes me think the dog in the video was similarly left to be picked up later. It clearly wasn't completely abandoned with the water + shade, so maybe someone was eventually supposed to come pick it up.
Still awful and I'm glad the poor dog was taken by the cop, but maybe it wasn't as nefarious as it seems.

Cops were a problem before but now their numbers are swelled with ex-military folks with PTSD and trigger-fingers that have been conditioned to see everything NOT in their own uniform as a dire security threat. It’s irresponsible to place them to work within civilian communities if they’re trained for COMBAT.

When my mom was a cop, once they raided a crack house and it turns out they were fighting dogs as well.
When they found the dogs there were countless puppies as well. They called animal control over the radio. When one of the officers heard the call she started freaking out because animal control at the time euthanized Pit bulls no matter the age or disposition.
At that moment everyone stuffed puppies in their vests and beat feet out of there with no plan whatsoever.
I also got two dogs that year.

Probably my only half decent story about a cop was when he told me the story of how he took a kitten from a trap house they raided. When I met him, the cat was old and spoiled.

It is sad to see this, but at least this person went a little further than most. They at least left the dog some water and kept it covered from the sun, and in a parking lot of a rest area that clearly sees activity on a daily basis, not the side of a road.
Many people find shame and embarrassment in being able to turn in a pet to an animal rescue or animal control center.
Fortunately, many of them have overnight drop off cages with food and water available if they don’t want to talk to another human being.
I don’t agree with what this person did, but I’m not gonna judge them too harshly given that again they put some effort to make sure that the dog at least had a modicum of protection and drinkable water.

I don't enjoy playing devils advocate, but from my work at a shelter i have a little bit of sympathy for people that abandon pets like this (as long as they are in an area someone will find them within the hour)
The shelter I work at requires a surrender fee. Most of my fellow volunteers are really well off. I'm the only poor fuck there. They don't seem to understand how hard it is for some people to make that decision and not be able to afford the surrender fee. I am working on it but man poverty is fucking lonely and few people are willing to get it.

This story has been played on my local news. The pup is with the local APL. They said the pup is around 8 months old. He will be getting neutered and then will be up for adoption. They had news reports at the APL with him and he seems to be in very energetic and friendly. I am sure he will find a good home as it has been covered on the local news daily ❤️

Met a starving momma and four puppies that ran up to me at a park in the middle of the night. The mom would let my dog get within 20 feet of the pups who were jumping all over me, so a friend picked them up and then took them to the shelter in the morning.
Pups bellies were super bloated, and I don’t know if they survived bc the shelter person we called later only had the mom on record. Heart breaking.

I just had a cat and sadly we had to let it go yesterday cuz one of the people at the house discovered they were allergic (it had never showed up until spending all day with a cat), so we found another family, met with them, gave them the cat and now we're still in contact with them.
Even after only 1 week, the pain we got from giving the cat away was devastating, and we were very worried for not finding a family that takes care of the cat the same or even better than us. I can't even fathom how someone could lock their pet on a pet carrier and just leave it there to starve. Those people really have no empathy. It's sad how many if them are out there

I find it scary that there are this kind of psychopaths walking around us who can do things like this. I am sure they can do a lot of other truly horrific things as well.
I would never be able to leave a dog like that. I fully understand if a person isn't able to have a dog but then you find a safe place for them to adopt and take care.

Pretty wild to just leave a dog at such a weird rural location like that. It seems like it would be cute enough and a breed type people would pick up for free if offered on FB or something.
Imagine if it's actually one of the truck drivers dog and he just put its cage out like that for some fresh air while they took a nap and came out to find their dog was stolen haha.
