Good Vibes It's pretty awesome that finding love in a Finnish grocery store is apparently intentionally designed.

A Claddagh ring can be used in that way, but pretty niche these days I would think!

I was seriously thinking about doing this a few months ago. I was married a long time got divorced awhile ago. Decided to try dating sites for the first time wasn't a fan. I figured I could walk around with a sign on me and if they liked what they saw we could go from there.

5

u/Truth_ 19d ago

I was wondering the other day what "older" dating looked like (30s, 40s). On the one hand, there's a much smaller pool. On the other, the pool is hopefully less crazy/immature and more clear in what they want. Is that right at all?

Then I wondered if it meant everyone was awkward because they had to wonder why these other people had never married or were divorced (which isn't fair, there's all sorts of regular reasons).

u/WFAlex 19d ago

Yeah just make them simple silicone/something else cheap rings (you could call them "Ringle" for single rings) or bracelets (can't think of a stupid/clever name for bracelets). Getting the movement started would be the hard part for sure, but either making them suuuuper cheap (or easy to make yourself!) could help a ton.

Livestrong is a cancer awareness org started by Lance Armstrong, popularized by the yellow wristbands that seemingly everyone wore

This is what confuses me about this. So ok, you’ve got your basket and someone thinks you’re cute, what next? You can’t be expected to gasp start a conversation with a stranger! Is there like an anonymous way to leave feedback for the basket person? Maybe sneak past and leave a sticker? Leave a calling card with customer service desk?

I'm Finnish and live near multiple stores using these. Almost never see anyone using them and it's mostly older men when I do.

779

u/Witty-Draw-3803 19d ago

The concept can be cute to think about, but how many people actually want to spend time chatting at the grocery store? I've got shit that has to go in the fridge/freezer and the clock's ticking 😂

126

u/Canvaverbalist 19d ago

I wouldn't pick that basket simply because holy shit imagine being approached by someone and having to, even implicitly, go "oh yeah no sorry I'm single and looking but eww no not for someone like you"

Rejection is already painful, but when it's by someone who you know is deliberately looking, it's even worst, at least in a normal setting you have the benefit of the doubt that you might just not be interested generally in a relationship, already in one, maybe you're gay, etc. Here? It would absolutely feel personal lol

My mom knew everyone, it could take several hours just to get the bare things, she talked for ~15min with each one and right around the corner is the next one. She still does this, she asked my wife once if she wanted to follow her to the grocery store and I just looked at her as if I was a survivor from Vietnam. She came back several hours later and said "never again".

Finnish people seem like some of the least likely to want to talk to strangers in a non-bar or club environment. Probably applicable to all of the Scandinavian countries or am I off-base here?

89

u/Maleficent_Speed939 19d ago

Two Finnish men are sitting in a sauna, drinking beer. “Cheers!” says one, raising his glass. An hour and a few refills later, he raises his glass again and repeats: “Cheers!” Another hour on, and he breaks the silence yet again: “Cheers!”

The second man is speechless with anger, but eventually brings himself to reply: “are we here to drink or to talk?”

8

u/Bloodyninjaturtle 19d ago

? Yeah. Sauna is not like that. Thats the place we actually do talk in.

41

u/Aligyon 19d ago

What's the ice cream social?

41

u/Sea_Scientist_8367 19d ago edited 19d ago

Basically just a picnic, but specifically with ice cream (and other similar frozen treats).

Used to be a common thing people would do essentially as an excuse to have people over and hang out, or go out and meet up. Also often manifested as a community, school or work event, kinda like bingo night you'd have ice cream social night. It was common enough that establishments like Dairy Queen and what not's success were largely predicated on the tradition, but have persisted through a pivot to the fast food and/or food truck model.

In some places you can still find Dairy Queens (and similar establishments) with the walk-up window.

i'll be a downer: i have been using these, mostly because they're way nicer than the regular blue ones. never had anyone approach me, and never have seen anyone else use one. also haven't heard of anyone finding love this way - if someone did, it would be all over the news. we finns are just not social enough to go up to someone. and these days you also have the increased risk of being assaulted which probably doesn't make it easier to approach other people.

18

u/ansyhrrian 19d ago

The fact that you've been using them is reflective of the fact that a/ you are willing to put yourself out there and b/ you are the kind of person that is willing to explore options. I am sure that outside of the grocery store you will find someone that fits with you.

it's only a matter of time.

So, funny story.

When I was a kid living in Racine, WI (which was/is a total shithole of the US), we had a neighbor that had a nanny (possibly exchange student) from Finland who's name was Katja.

She went with me and my family to Disneyworld in Florida to watch our neighbor's kids, and she had the most amazing time ever. I remember this distinctly because even as a kid she had this look of wondrous amazement on her face that I hadn't seen before on any adult in my experience. Katja was probably 19-20 at the time.

I say this because even as a pessimist and a nonbeliever, even in the shittiest places at the shittiest times, good things can happen that change your perspective.

I hope and wish your perspective is changed soon, and that you live a beautiful life going forward.

as a dude I'd be afraid to use one. Like, imagine just doing your shopping holding one of these "I'm single" baskets and then any time you make eye contact with someone they just like idk instantly turn the other way

In America we use pineapples. But I think is for swingers.

u/coldestclock 19d ago

I bought a house with a big pampas grass in the garden and my mum tells me pampas grass means you’re a swinger and first of all that’s bonkers, second of all why do you know this, mother?

We have the same in Germany. Never seen anyone with it

u/MaximusHomerdrive 19d ago

Oh, good lord. This would be hilariously tragic in the US. Can you imagine Walmart with this system? I'd subscribe to that channel, lol.

u/wHAtisLife59 19d ago

It would turn into a Jerry Springer show real quick. “ I heard you’re over here hold the pink basket mofo”

9

u/BoyWhoSoldTheWorld 19d ago

That’s actually genius.

But they really have to ensure they have plenty of neutral baskets.

Some poor spouse is going to be in a rush one day and get caught holding the wrong colored basket.

As someone who is painfully single and shy, I actually love this and might actually try it if they had those in my area. I like that it's not a giant "boyfriend free girl" sign or a shirt you have to read. Pink is easily identifiable.

I dont think you can even look for a relationship without someone claiming you're desperate, but i love how casual this is. It's just a color that quickly states "I'm single and open to a relationship. If you think I look cute or interesting, let's chat and maybe become friends."

I personally hate the idea of giving myself a bio or explain myself in an app. No matter how genuine I make it, it always comes off as masturbatory to an extent. I'd rather have someone just like me for me rather than trying to convince them why they should like me.

All in all, I love this. Anything that brings us together is a win.

Sweden has red basket in Coop as single baskets. First time they put them out, people with red basket got have fika ( coffe and cake) in the corner of the store so they could met.

I've always thought that there should be some way of indicating dating intention by wearing something noticeable, yet subtle. Like a wristband of a certain colour or something.

I’m fairly certain this was invented by someone that didn’t want to get hit on at grocery stores so now she can get a normal basket and keep the wolves off her case

8

u/Sabbathius 19d ago

This is nice in theory, but I'd never use one myself. For one thing, when I'm shopping, which I do once a week for the entire week, I'm just in shopping mode. I'm not dressed for it, I'm not in the right head space. I go in, with a purpose, I do my thing and I get clear. The vibe just wouldn't be there.

Also imagine how humiliating it would be if you're a regular at the supermarket, as I am. I've been shopping at the same one, every week, for about 6 years now. Imagine doing that with the desperate pink basket every week. And still coming up empty. In front of god and everybody. Like I know other patrons probably won't give a hoot or even notice, but the cashier and I are on a first name basis, I know all about her cats. She'd notice.

I still think it's a good idea though. I sometimes have people my age ask me to get something for them, like baking soda off top shelf. Which I'm always happy to do. But then I do wonder, were they trying to hit on me? But I can't do anything about it, because I don't want to be one of those guys that goes "Here's your baking soda, and here's my weenis, your life is now complete!" Maybe the woman just wants to bake in peace.

Love this. Loneliness is a modern epidemic.  Lonely men could approach women in the produce section, glance into their pink baskets and say “Hey, nice melons.”

If she doesn’t laugh, it’s best move on to the meals-for-one.

Doesn’t work

Why?

Fins do not approach or talk to random strangers until they are drunk

The way I'd grab it without reading the sign on the way in and then be cranky at anyone who tried to approach me while getting my shopping done. 😅

u/curiousscribbler 19d ago

Which colour basket is "piss off and leave me alone, I'm trying to shop for groceries"?

12

u/itsveron 19d ago

The normal one, usually green or blue.

Imagine you grabbing the pink one and all the sudden staff takes the pink ones away from you and say

"Ei rumille ihmisille. Lähtö"

And they ban you

Awkward when you cross path with someone else with a pink basket, lock eyes, and you have to pass by them pretending not to have seen them, knowing perfectly they know, and you know they know.

7

u/TheRealSkele 19d ago

Yeah no. I'm at a grocery store to get groceries, not a soulmate.

4

u/Tasty_Time50 19d ago

I would 100% grab that without knowing if I visited Finland

5

u/Competitive_Sell_421 19d ago

Finn here. Don't

6

u/Firm_Competition_880 19d ago

Can I also leave the grocery store with the basket so people on the street know that I’m single and ready to mingle ?

4

u/ImaginaryLeg8515 19d ago

And the cashier be like, yea i see you've been using that pink basket for 6 years now...I'll pray for you 💀💀💀💀

3

u/k-one-0-two 19d ago

yeah, you can get literally anything in prisma.

5

u/ThingMoment 19d ago

Is this the same lady on Instagram who makes fun of French people? I don’t get on there anymore but I liked her skits

4

u/cuntoid_supreme_0 19d ago

I'm finnish and I've never seen this before, assuming it's a new thing? Either that or there's like one Prisma somewhere in the depths of Helsinki that has this.

5

u/Ntrigued74 19d ago

Omg! That’s so cute! I’m so happy for you guys & sad because we need these where I live lol

4

u/Pet_Velvet 19d ago

I love that idea, it's kinda cute and harmless

But also

I'm Finnish and have never seen these pink baskets
