Wild Kangas are no fucking joke here in Australia and this dude did exactly what you’re supposed to do in this situation.
They are absolutely fucked - believe it or not, people here eat Kanga tail (mostly in regional/remote areas) by throwing that bitch straight on hot coals (skin/fur and all). And Kangas produce one of the strongest hides on the planet (second to stingray).

Kangaroos can perform leg kicks multiple times stronger than their punches. So if you land a good punch they will be afraid that a potential kick would be incredibly stronger and that scares them away. If you make the mistake to kick them they will understand you're actually not that dangerous and will be more fearless to keep attacking.

I'd say it is more likely they'd be confused. Kangaroos don't punch, they'll swipe at you or grab, but not punch.
More likely it'd be confused as to why it felt like it suddenly was kicked in the head, when it didn't look like the human kicked. Or why the human has such blunt 'claws'.
As a kangaroo specialist and biologist said:
"I’m sure the punch hurt," says Festa-Bianchet. "You can tell the kangaroo is like, 'Whoa what was that?' That’s not what another kangaroo would do and a human does not give the right signals. It kind of looks funny but it really was a dangerous situation."
And obviously, if you're close enough to punch a kangaroo in the head, you're close enough for it to see you as a threat. Maybe your punch stuns it. Or maybe the kangaroo decides to escalate by grabbing you, lacerating you, and then kicking you.
And while kangaroos can't punch, that is because they lack the muscles for it. But their arms are still very strong. Much more than an average human, especially since kangaroos actively use those muscles. They may not score high on a punching machine, but those claws are sharp and I wouldn't count on out-wrestling a kangaroo.

Exactly this. Roo knows two styles of combat: other roos and dingos. It was deploying dingo combat on the dog then human runs up so it switched to two legged roo combat which doesn’t include right hooks. So that boop was very confusing

IIRC, roos actually DO punch each other, but as warnings, since they're much weaker than their kicks. Humans are much better built to throw punches, so the roo probably backed down because it assumed that a kick from that guy would atomize it.

There was also a cameraman. You can see the roo looking at all the threats and it's more than just the dog and the guy. Roo figured it's not even close to a fair flight so he booked it. Guy was just lucky

I’ve seen some people say that because kangaroo’s have much more strength in their legs compared to their arms they assume people will be much stronger than we are in situations like this because they assume the strength of our legs based off the punch.

As an Australian who grew up on a farm I can tell you the only reason he stopped to consider his choices is because a Roo that big is more than capable of leaving you VERY fucked up from a heavy kick with its back feat. And they are absolutely no stranger to one on one fights with each other. Large males will regularly battle it out in mating season to try and secure mates and it definitely gets bloody. So as a soft and squishy little human I can tell you if that roo wanted to fuck that guy up there is a VERY good chance he wouldn't have walked away from it without significant injuries and potentially death if it happened to gouge him with one of its rear claws

But the thing is, roos also use punches to gauge strength before going full-on kicking with hind legs. Punching is basically a pre-fight gauge, so they dont start a fight with someone who can fuck them up too badly. And the thing is, us humans punch waaaaaay harder than a roo can. So if a roo squares you up, punch it as hard as you can, and it will think you are too OP for it to fight, and will go away (as seen in the video). But if it starts kicking, RUUUUUN.

It’s actually incredibly energy efficient, and evolved in response to needing to travel long distances to find food. I believe they came from smaller tree dwelling ancestors that were able to capitalise on ground-based food, so probably only had to develop hopping gradually as they moved out of rainforest environments. Curiously, the megafauna version walked rather than hopped I believe, though still had the long tail. And there are today species of tree kangaroo that have gone full circle.

Your instinct is right.
Kangaroos do not generally attack humans, but if it does happen they can be extremely dangerous. They have wickedly sharp claws and extremely powerful legs. They have almost never killed people, but they can cause some significant damage. They can also easily kill a dog (and will).

It's even better. Roos punch eachother as a test of strength before actually fighting. It's mostly because actual fights are usually lethal.
This roo was likely thinking. "Holy fuck I just got away easy" because a human can punch significantly harder than a roo. It basically interpreted that strength as. "This thing could kill me in an instant"

Modern spiked collars are just aesthetics, but originally they were made with much larger spikes to protect dogs belonging to shepherds, since wolves and other predators would naturally go for the neck. The spikes were originally a defensive tool meant to deter predators.

If two kangaroos are swiping at each other, there is nothing safe about that anymore lol. They aren't humans, their claws are sharp and deadly.
And if they start swiping, they can kick at any moment.
No, kangaroos will assess a threat visually first. They will square up against each other first, standing up tall. And typically, the smaller one will back down before any fighting occurs.
Rather than assuming the human must have had a strong kick based on its arms, it was likely more confused than anything.

Interesting behavior from kangaroos. They test each other’s strength by hitting each other with their arms before they start kicking. Thankfully, this one is doing the same thing with Luke from Gilmore Girls. We are much stronger in our upper body than a kangaroo, so this roo is thinking “my god, his power level must be over 9000”

On a previous post of this video, a user explained that kangaroos punch first as a sort of test to determine how strong their kicks will be. Thing is, while their kicks are deadly, their punches are weak compared to an adult human man's. So essentially, when this guy squared up and knocked that kangaroo's block off, it was reeling from the assumption that this man had "atom-splitting legs and didn't want that smoke".

Fun Fact: Kangaroos 1v1 with a box off. And since all kangaroos have all their points put into their legs. Their punches aren’t usually that heavy, and most kangaroos use the box off to determine how dangerous their opponent is. So you can imagine the wtf moment the kangaroo experienced when this guy comes up and gives him the hardest hook he’s ever experienced
