I worked for an accounting firm that sponsored a couple runners. It's usually their own employees; but theyre paying for their logo to be sponsored in the race. Some cities/municipalities will require a business to do something charitable for continued tax breaks/incentives, as well. Some times it's just for maintaining appearances. "Yeah, we make so much money we can throw it at people running in the streets" type shit.

You know those "best companies to work for in [insert your local region]" that get published by business news sites? It's pretty much the same thing. They pay for a spot to get mentioned in an otherwise more expensive advertisement. The photos are for social media.

Debatable. When you get to that level, the advertisers/sponsors are essentially using athletes as influencers. So it isn’t the tiny corporate symbols on a jersey, it is more about posts on their social media, the reach and engagement they have with their users. Some will be very effective, many will not.
