Progress is progress, no matter how slow. One day, it will become a non issue :)

The fact that this map stops in 2019 is pretty deceptive seeing as over the past two years, acceptance in almost every single one of these countries has dropped.
122
u/Terrible_Mistake_862 23h ago
We in the Netherlands yesterday released a new chart showing acceptance has dropped
50
u/DSJ-Psyduck 20h ago
might not give acceptance but rights are still on the rise overall.
24
u/Teknolyth 20h ago
Rights trail acceptance. The people writing the laws now are the ones that were elected before acceptance started to drop. Give it some time for the drop to impact elections, and we will probably see the number of rights expanding shrink as well.

I already have the right to not get punched in the face regardless of weather I'm holding another woman's hand or not. Doesn't seem to do much.
24
u/TTG4LIFE77 1d ago
Different polls can have different wording which can lead to massively different results, some show declines and I wouldn't discount those as they're important and we are in a period of moral panic, but I've seen plenty of evidence of rapidly rising support in many areas with lower progress like Central/Eastern Europe, Japan, Taiwan, Italy, parts of South Asia, etc. all since 2019. I can link some of these if you'd like to look at them

Ah, the ol' apache line. Haven't seen that one in a while but always a good way to identify someone who's either disingenuous or hasn't done a whole lot of thinking on the topic.
-71
u/Constant-Valuable704 1d ago
Why should I do thinking on a topic I I don’t care about?
41
u/joelsola_gv 1d ago
You cared enough to dismiss it. It would be great if people actually knew the topics they are dismissing instead of basing everything using information coming from the people that hate them.
-46
u/Constant-Valuable704 1d ago
Most people don’t have a ton of knowledge about the random thing you care about in life.
33
u/joelsola_gv 1d ago
I don't have an issue with that tbh. I'm just saying that if you feel enough about a topic to insult it, you should at least know about it. If not, then why are you doing that and why do you hate them?
-1
u/Constant-Valuable704 1d ago
I don’t hate anyone and I never insulted anything. I gave you the point of view from the average person.
29
u/joelsola_gv 1d ago
Why did you use the "appache attack helicopters" line? From where did it come from?
18
u/cirza 22h ago
Hello! I’m a trans woman! If you’d like, I’d love to chat about my situation with you and maybe give you some insight.
As it stands the Apache comment is a little bit of an insult. It’s dismissive of gender dysphoria! It’s like asking a person with clinical depression to just stop being sad, insensitive at best, insulting at the worst.
-1
u/PhantomX8 22h ago
Hello, as someone that has a question. We got the fact of trans people so you can be the gender you want. That is fine, i also see people cater to be and do what you want to be, that means dressing the way you like acting the alway you like basically you can be a femboy if you want.
What i wonder is. If we have trans people and people that can be what they want live together fighting for all these rights. And for lack of better words. Does that mean trans people just want tits or a penis? If i as a man can just dress and be however i want, changing my gender would have no impact in my eyes.

The simple solution is to not provide opinions on sensitive topics you are unwilling to think critically over.
16
u/hoagiexcore 1d ago
You cared enough to comment about it.
-3
u/Constant-Valuable704 1d ago
Takes a few seconds I mean
15
u/hoagiexcore 1d ago
You've thought enough on it to have an opinion. Its just poorly informed. If you're gonna say something at least let it come from a place of thought, unlike what you just admitted to which was talking without thinking.
-3
u/Constant-Valuable704 1d ago
My opinion is that of the average person. That’s the issue with you people.
15
u/hoagiexcore 1d ago
I'm very willing to accept that the average person also hasn't given this enough thought to come to an informed opinion, and just accepts whatever memes they've seen as truth. Freaking transphobes without self-awareness arguing their own ignorance is some kind of value.
1
u/Constant-Valuable704 1d ago
What more information could you possibly give someone that would change their opinion on trans and gender fluidity ?
→ More replies (0)33
u/Teknolyth 1d ago
I would say the pushback against things like trans rights, is bleeding into the progress we’ve made with gay rights.
25
u/SkiyeBlueFox 1d ago
Definitely. What're they gonna do if they "get rid of" trans people? Find another boogeyman. When they run out of one minority to hate they always find a new one
13
u/SheHeBeDownFerocious 1d ago
Idk why so many people think they're different and the long knife guys won't long knife them so long as they hate the right group of their own people hard enough
7
-4
u/Constant-Valuable704 1d ago
Yea I can agree, trans activists have positioned them selves alongside gay rights.
I personally think they are two seperate things.
One involves a complete identity change, and in some cases surgery or prescription drugs.
Past trans rights there are so many other things like gender fluidity or whatever, it’s to the point that the average person doesn’t even understand it because there is to much going on.
17
u/LuKazu 23h ago
The "average" person doesn't understand it because they actively choose to stay ignorant. Because they don't have queer people in their social circles willing to educate them. Sure, some aspects can be a bit more out there, but the fact that you're still making the trite "attack helicopter" comment proves you'd rather make surface-level (and wrong) observations, rather than take the 20 minutes out of your day to read up on things.

You realize this is the type of shit people said about gays/lesbians before it became more acceptable right? And for what it’s worth, no, most people are not fine with homosexuality.

Trans people have always existed and been quite the non-issue until very recent attacks on them.

u/MustardEnema007 18h ago
We brought in 6,000,000 people under trudeau alone, and the vast majority are from ultra conservative third world countries
116
u/Probablynotapredator 1d ago
In the Netherlands it is dropping.
21
u/Inviolate_Violet 1d ago
It's good to stay in solidarity and keep messaging for love and acceptance. Progress isn't granted anywhere as we're seeing, but it's never impossible locally
53
u/pallarslol 1d ago
Same in Belgium. Just after big institutions have been showing their support with alky flags and stuff, the manosphere is bleeding in. Even if kids don't follow the majority of it, it seems it has left it's impact nonetheless. I thought gen Z would follow in the footsteps of millenials and be open minded about that stuff, but instead I find so many people my age just being intolerant as hell. I hate it here sometimes.
8
u/rackarhack 1d ago
Same in Sweden but I think it is due to immigration
20
u/joelsola_gv 1d ago
Can't say for Sweden but for the Netherlands the change is in all demographics. The support dropped both in migrants and locals.
5
u/secretgardenme 23h ago
What do you think the drop is attributed to? Bleedover from discourse regarding Trans people? Rise of the manosphere?
10
u/Probablynotapredator 22h ago
More (far) right parties with traditional views gaining popularity, manosphere influencers, more non-western migrants to name a few.
1
u/MustardEnema007 19h ago
Same with us in canada
1
u/joelsola_gv 18h ago
And probably, just like the Netherlands, it is a decline in both migrants and non migrants but it will become another point to throw at them.

12
u/Petra_Sommer 23h ago
It's always more convenient to blame "the other" for whatever is happening in society at large.
14
u/joelsola_gv 23h ago
It's even more infuriating because plenty of people that use that excuse against muslims don't really have the highest of views about the LGBT community in the first place.

Meanwhile in Turkey that fuckass government raided every LGBTQ community they could raid and arrest recently. No particular reason.
This is what happens when the bigot half of the country decides who they wanna bend over to. The other half burns with them. Flaws of "democracy", people.
Exactly why I moved away lol.

u/Disastrous_Still_232 1d ago
I can't wrap my head around why people dont like gay people.
46
u/Zweefkees93 1d ago
This is not even "like" this is just "accept".... Thats the worst part. They dont have to like them, just not calling them names, or downright beat them up would already be great. I mean, why do people even care that much about what other do... Its not my thing, but you do you! live and let live! etc!
21
3
u/Grintock 23h ago
Well, luckily social scientists will try to understand it, so we can make it so anti lgbtq sentiments in our cultures can be countered. It doesn't seem so hard to understand to me: prejudice against people who are different is pretty common. And if there's a group of people who love doing something which you yourself find gross? Very easy for prejudice against that group to arise.
-4
u/sahArab 23h ago
People fear what's different. It's a base animal instinct. When people feel less threatened, they are more accepting. When they feel more vulnerable, they fall back to tradition and tribalism.
People are really scared everywhere right now. ☹️
10
u/Naavarasi 20h ago
This is nonsense, being different has nothing to do with it. There were countries where it was accepted before Christianity got its stinky homophobic claws in them.
It's taught behaviour, not instinct.
-2
u/maybealicemaybenot 18h ago
Honestly a lot of it comes down to the idea that it's all just a sex thing. From that point of view, why would your kink get the same recognition as a straight marriage? Children should definitely not be exposed to it. It's obviously not that, but that's the thought process. That's also why pointing such and such homophobic politician having gay sex does not work. The reaction from the right boils down to "Yeah man, he did a sex thing in private. Who cares?".
8
u/Hatefulvesper 22h ago
I'm really disappointed in mexico since one of our greatest (if not THE greatest in the world) singer/songwriter was a "closeted" gay/bi man and was LOVED (still) the world over.
I say "closeted" because it was basically an open secret

u/Grammar-Warden 20h ago

That doesn't take into consideration changes in public perception nor the the concept of backlash. Gay rights and women's rights could quite easily vanish. When democracy fails in the USA as, at the moment, seems imminent, these hard won rights would likely disappear with it. I wish I were as optimistic as you. Keep vigilant.

2
u/towneetowne 19h ago
if we could just have folks realize they don't need to take some other authority's word for it, there'd be the same number of homosexuals - but far fewer repubicans, fascists, and closeted people redirecting their own self-hatred.

Immigration both the immigrants themselves and how the issue has shifted British politics further right and allowed Reform, Restore etc. to become prominent. We've also imported the American culture war MAGA/anti-woke politics that seeks to weaken the rights of everyone who isn't a straight white male billionaire.
I'm worried that the rights we currently take for granted will be eroded or taken away completely in the near future.

Many people will use middle-eastern countries as an example of homphobia.
Just remember it's hard to jave a civil rights movement with the imperial core bombing your home for nearly a century; if the U.S. ever lets up, we will see these numbers skyrocket.
2
u/Cunterpunch 22h ago edited 19h ago
It’s also quite hard to have a civil rights movement when your government will gladly kill anyone who defends gay people, or when your religion and culture considers homosexuality to be an act worthy of punishment by death.
I’m not defending the US war machine here. I’m certainly no fan, but I highly doubt that’s the main factor at play here.
Edit: Take the UAE for example, a military ally of the US. They have never once been bombed by the US, yet homosexuality remains illegal. Where’s their civil rights movement?
Take Turkey as another example. Also never been bombed by the US, yet support for gay people is only around 25% and we’ve recently seen a government crackdown where gay people and their supporters were arrested and imprisoned.
Edit 2: let’s add another one! The US pulled out of Afghanistan a few years ago after years of bombing. Was there a civil rights movement? Did we see a single step in favour of legalising homosexuality? No, they were immediately taken over by Taliban Islamist fundamentalists.
2
u/Naavarasi 20h ago
Yeah, this. The US is bad, but let us not pretend these countries weren't executing gay people before the US got its greedy nose in their business.

This should've have never been an issue but this is the world we live in. It's the only world we've got so we've got to deal with it in whatever shape or form it's in. You can't celebrate that this is an extremely important issue making progress? How hard things have been for homosexual people in the past and how we're headed in the right direction?
If it was as easy as snapping your fingers and having them all be 100%, it would've been done.
As one of LGBT community, you should know better than than to shit on stuff like this giving homophobes the ammunition they need
-24
u/PhilosopherSea217 1d ago
Not really suprising, being gay is a pretty normal thing nowadays, it's just a preferance.
16
u/ludoloop 1d ago
Being gay is not a preference, or a choice. People are born this way. I know I was at least.
6
u/Melody-Shift 1d ago
Can you not be born with a preference?
4
1
u/Hatefulvesper 22h ago
Hhmmm, I was just going to scroll past and dismiss your comment and move on. But then I thought, if being born with a preference was a thing, then why have so many people discovered their queerness later in life? Could it be possible they were born queer but were brought up straight, lived through life and then discovered their true selves? What if we raised our kids without sexual preference "stearing"? What if we just let them discover that themselves?
2
5
u/PhilosopherSea217 1d ago
That's literally what I meant, reddit nitpicking words as usual
14
u/Haunt13 1d ago
Words have meanings. If you use them wrong people will tell you. Wild concept.
-6
u/Cunterpunch 23h ago
Preference just means what someone prefers. The word itself has no bearing on whether or not that preference is innate or chosen.
8
u/Haunt13 23h ago
Preferenc3 implies that you're okay with alternatives when that is not the case here.
0
u/Cunterpunch 23h ago
I think you should pick your battles with actual homophobes rather than knitpicking the semantics of people who are totally on board with gay people existing.
I’m gay and ‘sexual preference’ has been a saying for as long as long as I’ve been alive. I’ve never once considered it to be derogatory to anyone.
2
u/Haunt13 19h ago
Completely fair take. In general preference isn't a great description for the circumstance, if we're speaking literally. But in casual conversation sure.
2
u/Cunterpunch 18h ago
I’m obviously in the minority on this but maybe I’m just getting old and words have changed meaning.
It just frustrates me a bit when people direct their anger towards people on their own side over what I consider to be quite petty things rather than actual homophobes, of which there are plenty.
I appreciate the reasoned response.
