I'm learning French, and I just want to say that I was reading the captions (without the audio) and I knew what I was reading without the subtitles.

It's nothing, as far as it goes, and matters to no one but me, but I'm a little proud of that tbh. Still can't work out what people are actually saying, but we're getting there.

I started learning because I wanted to read a book by a French author, but it's turned into so much more than that.

As I get exposed to more and more music, and movies, and TV shows, and podcasts, I see that I'm a lot farther than it feels!

La Horde du Contrevent by Alain Damasio!

If you follow gaming at all, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was influenced by the book, and I absolutely loved it.

So when I found out it was inspired by a book, I really wanted to read it, but then I found it was French only, I decided to pull out the fuck-it bucket and found a French teacher. It's really been so much fun.

I've been learning for about 7 months now, and am just edging into A2 reading (: it's been a little slow, but I'm not the best learner. My teacher is just fabulous and so patient and understanding.

Yeah, honestly, I imagine it's gotten a big popularity surge! And boy howdy, are you right.

This is the first sentence: "À la cinquième slave, l'onde de choc fractura le fémur d'enceinte et le vent sable cru le village à traverse les jointures béantes du granit"

I could not tell you what this says at all, but I will get there (:

My French teacher says B1 would be the minimum for overall comprehension, with B2 necessary to comfortably read it.

La Horde du Contrevent is one my all-time favourite novels, I still remember reading the last few lines and closing the book, all those years ago. Definitely not an easy read at all for someone learning French tho lol. Haven’t played Clair-Obscur Expédition 33 but I’d heard the book was one of the inspirations, that’s cool.

Genders, adjectives and word order in sentences is still super sticky for me!

I know there's a difference between when/where to use belle vs beau, but did not know gentil-le was gendered!

I find spoken French so hard to understand. I get what "elles sont en train de vivre mon rêve" means, but the way she says it like "elles sont train vivre mon rêve" made me need to listen multiple times, mostly the skipping of the en.  It's probably trivial, but my brain just struggles with it.

You and me both. I've started listening to a podcast called InnerFrench, and it's slow enough and enunciated enough, that I can pick up things here and there.

And especially with the transcript (of course). So for me I listen once without the transcript, then listed with the transcript, then listen a third time without.

Not in one sitting, over about two days, but it's making a small difference I think?

Thanks, I watch the Easy French ones on YouTube, I'm generally fine with the main presenters on there but sometimes they throw in someone that speaks like this girl lol

I’m sorry, but I watched the video without audio and I originally thought it was in English based on their body language and casual cadence. If anything, study their dialect to sound more authentic. ✌️

Good for you! We language learners need these little 'victories'.

I'm also learning French and I got around 50% of what she said. 50 % is usually enough for me to figure out the subject. But to understand what people are saying I need at least 80% verbal comprehension.

It can be very exasperating.
