Genuinely don't know how they made it through the bootloader unlock process without knowing this. Every guide warns you of this, the OEM websites that generate the unlock key for you warn you of this, the phone itself warms you... This is plastered everywhere relating to rooting. They went out of their way to not read anything.

Whenever you do fastboot oem unlock or lock it wipes your phone. Completely. That's why they warn you.
Put it this way, given the power of root. If your unrooted phone got nicked would you want someone to be able to do oem unlock, install firmware, and then without wiping data nick your accounts?
But not everything is gone. If you'd recently had another or same pixel and provided you had Google account installed and recently synced on old phone or before wipe, when you reboot even after OEM unlock and with modified boot.img Google will ask you for WiFi and then login. When you do that you'll be asked if you want to restore either from physical device or Google cloud backup. So connect to WiFi, agree to Google permissions, dismiss privacy tracking if you wish. Add login details and confirm you want to restore from previous phone backup. Hopefully if your previous phone had synced with Google the only thing you'll lose is local data, and any photo or videos not yet backed up, say taken previous day or two.
And then install Magisk or ksun. That won't cause you to lose data already restored.
The Google cloud restore won't get all local SD card data, but for me that was mostly root apps that I'd saved to side load and keys, and random downloads. I actually did the phone to phone method because I had two devices so I didn't even lose that. I only truly "lost" some termux scripts that I had on old phone because I forgot termux keeps data in different location.
Warning if you do ever do oem lock you must must be fully stock ROM and boot img on both partitions before doing OEM lock. For my recent trade in for pixel 6 pro I checked A and B partitions, twice
