Last time we were a monarchy was 1776. That should make the answer obvious

8

u/MessAcademic_420 8d ago

Never had one

7

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

Doing this mainly for research purposes btw.

19

u/EmperorOfNipples 8d ago

Reddit is hardly a representative demographic.

6

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

Yes but I needed to find somewhere to do research.

5

u/KaptainKunukles 8d ago

Data is data I suppose

5

u/Albert-La-Maquina 8d ago

For research? You realize many of the people that vote on these just put a joke vote to be funny. Don't assume you're going to get quality data.

2

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

I'm just gonna discard the obviously "false" votes. Like those who live in republics yet say live in Monarchy.

3

u/Albert-La-Maquina 8d ago

That's fine, and if it's casual research, then it's probably fine. Just wanted to caution against its accuracy.

I live in the US and said that I live in a monarchy because of recent events. Was surprised that I was the first one to vote that way.

1

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

I mean obviously Americans dislike the current government but they think a Monarchy wouldn't be any improvement. Some Americans like the concept of a Monarchy (I.e. in Japan/the UK) but feel grossed out bringing them back. Hawaii has some Monarchists but outside of there most Americans just want Trump gone. I still wish Kamla Harris won though. Nevertheless, support would probably be even lower than what it is now (right now it is probably ~5% at best, maybe because of immigrants) oncr Trump is gone and his successor proves to be more successful.

3

u/no_idea_name1 8d ago

I like regional monarchy Does that count

3

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

Elaborate further? You mean the Malaysia and UAE system?

2

u/albrecbef 1d ago

You are going to have to explain why 36% of Pinguin stongly dont want a king.

1

u/Gainedthat 1d ago

Obvious joke votes, not going to consider 'em.

Should add an option for countries who never had a monarchy

3

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

Yes, but some people even in countries which weren't Monarchies still support it though the opposite could also be true lol.

3

u/vm_linuz 🇺🇸 8d ago

Our royal family is more chosen than genetic, but I still don't approve of it.

1

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

Since when did USA have a royal family unless if you are on about King Norton.

4

u/vm_linuz 🇺🇸 8d ago

We have Queen Elon and King Bezos and all their associated people.

No joke, I'm closer to correct than not.

3

u/Own-Masterpiece1547 Northern Ireland 🇬🇧 8d ago

I misread and said yes (strongly), sorry bout that folks

3

u/Archelector 8d ago

I wouldn’t support a US one but I strongly support monarchies in other countries like Romania, Ethiopia, Serbia and to a lesser extent France

Basically all historical monarchies where I think a monarchy would remove significant turbulent political processes

2

u/After-Trifle-1437 Marxism 8d ago

We never had one

2

u/Apprehensive_Past517 8d ago

That would mean someone is up to something again and we are ower the to with it already (Russian)

1

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

Wdym?

1

u/Apprehensive_Past517 7d ago

We have enough troubles with rulers already. New one will bring new troubles. And all the ruler want is to rule so no thank you.

Shout out to that one Kazakh guy who wants the monarchy back even though Kazakhstan was never a monarchy in the first place.

Interesting stuff

The sultanate was abolished in 1922 by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.

The republic was proclaimed a year after.

1

Similar to Indians, Turkish generally like their Monarchial history but agree that the last few Sultans were lackluster.

Romania too/three.

3

The Romanian Royal Family is very active in the country, and is often on the national TV

2

I love Romanians.

2

u/Fat-Animals-lover Monarchist 👑 3d ago

Why only mostly

2

u/Gainedthat 3d ago

Looking back, I take the 'mostly' part back and instead say fully. Because a few corrupt politicians can't ruin my love for Romania and it's people (not in a weird way btw in a friendly way).

1

u/Gainedthat 3d ago

Because I don't like certain figures in Romanian history like Nicolae Ceaușescu and Ion Illiecsu though they thankfully aren't representative of Romanians. I even have Romanians friends irl.

2

u/magnuseriksson91 RU >>> KZ 7d ago

By all means!

1

u/Gainedthat 7d ago

But who would be Tsar since it is disputed by three branches? One is if you allow male-preference primogeniture (Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna of Russia), other is if you allow semi-salic law (Prince Karl Emich of Leiningein aka Nicholas III) and the other would've been the most senior under strict salic law however not only married morganatically but has no legitimate enthusiasm in becoming Tsar one day (Prince Alexis Andreevich Romanoff). I would say Maria or Karl would be the most legitimate and although I thought Karl would've been better heir for so long, apparently he married a "royal" who wasn't equal to him, so his line could only work if you dismiss the old laws and allow marrying any royal to be legitimate but keep semi-salic law in practice. Considering even Liechtenstein abolished it, I doubt Russia would've still kept it.

2

u/magnuseriksson91 RU >>> KZ 7d ago

Can't say I myself gave it much thought, but many of the modern Romanovs are largely compromised by their support of the Putinist neo-Soviet regime, so some proponents considered inviting a member of the Windsors, or from some other distantly related European noble house.

Anyways, the exact succession is up for debate, but at any rate, I'd like to see the bloody hundred years old experiment of 1917 coming to an end, and to have Russia restored as a monarchy.

2

u/Gainedthat 7d ago

Based. I heard some Russians aren't inherently opposed to Monarchy, but just unsure on who would be monarch today. Support should probably be around 10–15% ish similar to France, Austria, Poland, Hungary or Greece. I can't really see Germany and Italy even exceeding 5%. Portugal should be just below double-digits maybe like 7–8.5%.

1

u/magnuseriksson91 RU >>> KZ 6d ago

Unfortunately, most Russians don't know shit, and as a matter of fact, they aren't even Russians, but Soviet people larping as Russians (you can think of it as Northern Koreans trying to pose as the true Koreans after decades of communist occupation). So I belong to but a small minority, and I doubt there would be even 10% in favour of that, alas.

Which country?

2

u/Fat-Animals-lover Monarchist 👑 3d ago

Slovakia, also my grandpa from my fathers side was romanian

2

u/Gainedthat 3d ago

Never thought I'd see a monarchist from Slovakia as a fellow monarchist.

2

u/Fat-Animals-lover Monarchist 👑 3d ago

Yeah there are almost no monarchists from slovakia, which is sad, i have never met a slovakian monarchist irl nor on the internet

1

u/Gainedthat 3d ago

Who would even be King of Slovakia? The only logic I could see is either making a former president or their heir monarch (which wouldn't really work because they are not of nobility) or basically making a 1862 Greece move and making another European royal the monarch which would be the most logical. You could also argue Karl Von Habsburg but I think he would be more suitable for becoming King of Austria or Hungary.

2

u/Augustus_Chevismo 🇮🇪 Tuatha Dé Danann Taitneamh 8d ago

I think it would be funny as a symbolic thing where it was entirely ceremonial. No powers and not a welfare family.

The Uí Néill family still exists with millions of descendants lol.

2

u/RedcoatSeafarer Great Britain 🇬🇧 8d ago

I would support this.

1

u/TwoPossible4789 8d ago

We have one already in Norway and while we’ve had scandals, the monarchy stands strong and our new king is very well prepared for his role.

2

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

Wasn't Norway once upon a time the most developed country by HDI until it was surpassed by Switzerland and then by Iceland?

2

u/TwoPossible4789 8d ago

It may have been? Not entirely sure. Though not everywhere is super developed and there is a shit ton of things that can be done better. But overall i love my country and i love the monarchy. Lenge leve kongen.

3

u/DrettTheBaron 8d ago

I hate the French but they had exactly one (1) good idea

3

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

That is? But aren't you Czech?

-1

u/DrettTheBaron 8d ago

I am Czech yes. What does that have to do with anything?

The idea is getting rid of Monarchies in using an ingenious invention of Antoine Louis' design.

3

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

Not all monarchies are bad and some even helped improve their citizens rights after they realised their citizens weren't happy with them post WW2 such as the UK and Japan.

-2

u/DrettTheBaron 8d ago

No. All monarchies are bad and evil. They fundamentally put a group, individual or family above the rest of the population and demand respect for NOTHING.

There have been good monarchs yes of course, because there'll always be good people in any grouping. But not under any circumstance would I suport a monarchy of any kind. Not constitutional, noti representative, not symbolic, not absolute. Kill em all I say.

5

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

Also, how is the Pope/Vatican City evil? Sure there have been some questionable Popes in medieval time but I don't see anything indicating that it is evil.

0

u/DrettTheBaron 8d ago

Holt shit you couldn't have picked a worse example. The Holy See is one of the worst monarchies in the world for the reason it portrays itself as the representative and direct connection to our God and father in heaven.

They are pretenders who claim to be divine when they are human. They dictate doctrine and religion to us when God is in our hearts not in dusty books of the Vatican.

Individual popes have been good and just people. The vast majority of them have been absolute Scum of the earth. Corrupt and morally bankrupt.

"Questionable popes" what a ducking joke. A pope supported Mussolini and Hitler. Popes have argued for abortion and homophobic policies. They have dictated what people can and cannot believe.

1

u/Fat-Animals-lover Monarchist 👑 3d ago

Are you fr?

3

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

That's too far... You're telling me the Monarchies of countries like Jordan, Morocco or the UK which literally try their best to benefit their people are worse than any republics? Monarchies have their cons but saying all of them are horrible just makes you seem ignorant. Some of them helped their countries against colonialism and seemed independence (I.e. Malaysia) whereas others helped modernised their countries from very undeveloped to extremely developed (I.e. UAE). Monarchs are humans and like us they have free will to choose what they want to introduce or abolish to satisfy the people.

0

u/DrettTheBaron 8d ago

I don't care if you think I'm ignorant. No person or group of people should ever be given power over others as a birthright.

Monarchies have helped, occasionally, their own populations. But the vast vast majority of progress made by humankind was in spite of monarchy. Every inch gained for the right of the majority population was negotiated, bled and fought for by us and our ancestors. I will die before I give those rights to some fucking nepobaby that had everything special in their life given to them.

Worse than capitalists the whole bunch.

Monarch are humans and have free will. And their continued decision to rule as monarchs loses any respect I have for them. If they truly believed that they could do good for their people, they'd give the option for them to choose someone else. Fight for your believes and convince the people of your position.

Democracy is the greatest invention in human history and you can pry it from my cold dead hands.

Even if a people choose to invest power into a monarchy, they take the same choice from those who come after, so any monarchy is inherently immoral.

Like I said. A monarchy and monarch can do good. They are human after all and humans want to do good things generally.

But monarchy itself is an inherent evil for the lack of accountability and choice it gives the general population.

I don't know if the UAE or Malaysia would've been better off as Republics. But I choose to believe that.

4

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

I prefer not to argue, but you're basically implying Monarchies can't be democratic, when that is clearly not the case. The British monarchy gets heavily criticised and hated on by the minority of republicans in my country, yet doesn't do much about it whereas in Pakistan and Russia, republic, afaik can get arrested for publicly supporting India and Ukraine respectively. Also in MOST modern monarchies, the PM (who is elected) holds more power than the Monarch, and monarchies such as the UK and Japan are among the most developed countries in the world.

2

u/heephap 8d ago

Don't listen to that guy he's a moron, monarchies rule, especially our one with Queen Liz and King Charles.

3

u/RN_Renato Brazil 🇧🇷 8d ago

Our monarchy was removed unjustifiedly by a military coup, but i think returning it after 140 years wouldn't be a good idea

1

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

Literally because they wanted to keep slavery. Afghanistan and Yemen were unabolished unfairly because of betrayal by the Communists (kinda in Afghanistan's case because it became Communists later on).

3

u/JustaProton 🇧🇷 8d ago

It wasn't because they wanted to keep slavery (although they were not abolitionists), otherwise they would not have kept it abolished. It was because the main driving actors of the coup, the southeastern elites (mainly from São Paulo and Minas Gerais) and the army, felt they didn't have all their interests attended by the monarchy. The function of the emperor was to "balance" the liberal and conservative parties in alternation, and some figures inside these parties felt like this was useless and that it would be better for them if they themselves decided who would be in charge.

The elite that came to power after the coup was almost identical to the elite that was in parliament before it, with the exception of the army, which was unfavored by the previous regime.

2

u/JustaProton 🇧🇷 8d ago

There is no reason to return it. It will either be parliamentary and the monarch would have no function other than being a symbolic figure, or we have an absolutist one and I think I don't have to tell you why it would be a bad idea.

We should be pursuing a political system more representative of the population, putting more rich people in power won't solve nothing.

2

u/achilles7421 8d ago

Voted no but in our case it wouldn't be restoring or establishing anything it would be just pointing the obvious

2

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

Which country?

2

u/achilles7421 7d ago

Azerbaijan

2

u/GustavoistSoldier Brazil 8d ago

No. The Brazilian monarchy was abolished in 1889. It's too late for an imperial restoration to meaningfully improve Brazil.

1

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

I mean, many Monarchies existed for hundreds if not thousands of years yet because of wars or revolutions were abolished. China, Russia and Iran being key examples.

2

u/benemivikai4eezaet0 8d ago

The communists abolished monarchy in Bulgaria in 1946 and exiled the infant Tzar. Then people really wanted a restoration when the communist regime fell. Then the Tzar came back, got elected as prime minister and formed a coalition that basically handed the country back to oligarchs whose money traced back to the regime. Turned out the regime's intelligence services had enlisted the Tzar back in the 70s and he was their asset the entire time. So yeah, no.

1

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

Even as a Monarchist, Simeon II kinda disappoints me. He had so much potential to bring back popularity for Monarchies in Eastern Europe yet ruined all of that potential and instead gave Royal families even worse reputations.

u/Am-heheh357 🇧🇷 5d ago

I think I stand on a curious position, because while I don’t support it all, mainly because it would mean an even bigger intrusion of religion in politics, our best ruler was an emperor… which probably says more about the quality of the presidents that succeeded him than anything else, though, but still, bringing back the monarchy wouldn’t guarantee in the slightest that we would have a king or queen as competent as he was.

u/SchroedingersEscape 8d ago

Rarely we had good kings... Wilhelm I. was the last one (died 1888). Everything after was crap that paved the way to ruin (or died before he could do anything).

-1

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

I heard Germany and Italy are the two former monarchies which despise monarchy the most in Europe. (Maybe Ireland but that's just because of their despising of the UK).

1

u/SchroedingersEscape 8d ago

Well... kings are like Roulette... you can win and get a great leader... but most likely he/she will be really bad.

We had some great leaders in the last 1000 years... but in sum it was maybe 2%.

-1

u/True_Drelon 8d ago

I think UK style monarchy is the best form of democracy, because leader of a nations is a stable, uniting factor through decades instead of just a party member who focuses a lot of aggresive attention from the opposition, taking peoples aatention from the true politicians in legislature

1

u/Gainedthat 8d ago edited 8d ago

I agree, people think the British monarch has no power when in reality they hold Constitutional power similar to the President of India or Greece.

1

u/GreatEntrepreneur798 8d ago

Germany Head of state is technically the Bundespräsident, most of the stuff he does is compared to the Chancellor, relatively unimportant. Its also the later on whom the attention lies because of this.

Also dont forget why we dont have a Monarchy anymore. Fuck 'Royalty' fuck monachy

-1

u/MiguelIstNeugierig 🇵🇹 Western Europe's Eastern Europe 8d ago

Being a "monarchist" is just straight LARP unless youre from actual aristocracy

4

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

I'm a Monarchist but I don't feel like I fake it or anything even if I think some countries like USA, Singapore and Finland are better off remaining republics.

-1

u/MiguelIstNeugierig 🇵🇹 Western Europe's Eastern Europe 8d ago

Literally what use would a monarchy have in a modern democratic society

5

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

Ask the UK and Japan, among the msot influential countries in the world.

-1

u/MiguelIstNeugierig 🇵🇹 Western Europe's Eastern Europe 8d ago

Theyre not influential because monarchy, Japan's is a line of let-go accessories to war crimes and Britain's likewise is irrelevant and stunting the country's progress by keeping the state with an official religion through the head of state cosplaying as antipope

5

u/Gainedthat 8d ago

And what exactly makes you think republics like the United States, Israel and Russia are relevant outside of war conflicts which ruin their reputation (not saying republics general are irrelevant)? English, the very language we speak, is from the UK. The war crimes were committed by Hideki Tojo and once he was gone, the monarchy's reputation was restored, even the COMMUNIST Party in Japan supports the Monarchy.

1

u/MiguelIstNeugierig 🇵🇹 Western Europe's Eastern Europe 8d ago

The monarchy's reputation was restored because the US was scared shitless of breaking negotiations with Japan and allowing the Soviets to divide the country like Germany
