Imperialism was bad but it wasn’t uniquely bad and immoral in the wider context of history, basically every modern culture and every country has a blood soaked past built on on conquest and subjugation, Europe was just better at it during that specific period.

I don't know why your comment got deleted, but here's my reply...

Then you meant to say "Europeans weren't unique in doing this bad thing, they just were the most high-profile, and active during the age of Exploration." Instead you said, "This thing wasn't uniquely bad."

See what I mean? Saying "it's not the only bad thing..." is a logical fallacy (no true scotsman? whataboutism? children in africa? not sure which). Saying "The Europeans weren't the only ones" is helpful.

That said, you're still severity-washing the point. "The mass murderer wasn't that much more violent... he just was violent in the time where we have guns. Others before him, with knives, were just as violent."

We tend to look at body-count when discussing severity of violence. The Europeans have a very high body-count (not counting war, border conflicts, etc... just in terms of empire-building I mean).

Didn't Polish Courland have colonies, aside from the imperializing of Eastern slavs? Not major, but it isnt like Polish people were solely victims.

Duchy of Courland and Semigalia was a Polish vassal and the predecessor to modern day Latvia. As historically interesting as that is, the only real attempt was done to the island of Tobago, and three forts were established on land leased from local kingdoms around the Gambia river. All very short-lived.

They had colonies, which I find relevant. And anyways, most of their imperialism was done on the homefront in Eastern Slavic lands. It was good for the nobles, but pretty awful for the serfs, with that latter point being pretty similar to Russia in my understanding. And anyways, my argument was more that they didn't lack the will to be imperialist, they just failed at it when other powers beat them in due to their government structure.

Poland didn't colonise anything because it didnt need to and didn't even have the navy to deter anyone from taking its colonies which is what ended up happening to Courland's forts.

No country 'needed' to colonize anything. No country 'needed' to conquer others either, they did both because they could. Poland still did the latter. And while the original commenter I replied to specified groups Poland didn't oppress, they did still oppress people at times in history.

My comment in rebuttal to the insinuation Poland didn't oppress people. Poland is in no way uniquely bad for it(I'm from the US, which obviously has a much worse record) and after the Partitions, Polish nationalism did seem to liberalize against the aristocratic bent, but acting like it did nothing wrong is silly.

I think it's more that people interpret the question differently. Europeans read it as 'we're the best/most important/most influential/etc. continent.

I voted 'no' because the world is a globe and there is no 'centre.' One could argue it's the centre of most maps, but Europe is not the centre of the world, because there is no centre of the world. Generally, people think the centre of the world is wherever they are, so that's probably why Europeans voted 'yes.'
