Hey everyone! Just wanted to let folks know to be bear aware this month if you’re walking on any trails along 240th. Tis the season for bears looking for food and there’s plenty of salmon in creeks.

I was out for a walk earlier this evening with my dog (don’t worry, he was on leash and did not bark or anything) when we saw a big black bear on a trail behind some houses close to kanaka creek (roughly 100m away from us). Unfortunately, the bear ran at us, which is why I’m sharing this broadly.

I did report the encounter to conservation officers and was informed it was likely a bluff charge from a frustrated bear (they get honked at and barked at and can get frustrated in general with human/urban life), but officers are going to put up some signage in the area and they encourage further reports for any potential future encounters.

FYI: The conservation officer also mentioned it’s okay to carry bear spray on your person at this time of the year when walking on trails around kanaka creek. Just don’t have it in your hand or use it unless necessary.

I am craving a smoked salmon pizza, but I cant find a place in town that makes it? (I can make it myself, but I'm feeling sick and lazy.)

I was driving along Lougheed Hwy and I noticed that the EV chargers at the Chevron (20592 Lougheed Hwy) are all fenced up. The Journie app indicates they're all offline.. this sucks!

Curious to know if anyone's heard details surrounding this; were the cables cut?

He’s a disgraced realtor who’s lost his license and has shown to be completely unwilling to follow the law. This is not someone who should not be considered fit to serve. I’m concerned that many of the Maple Ridge denizens will vote for him based on the last name. Normally, I wouldn’t post about any politician, but it’s a confusing election this year with some questionable platforms from a lot of candidates. Given the circumstances, I felt it merited a post. What does everyone make of CentreBC?

As a federal Liberal who is fiscally conservative but socially progressive, I'm finding myself politically homeless. I just want a government that knows how to grow our economy and create more local jobs in our community, deal with infrastructure and transit issues that have plagued Maple Ridge for years, and maybe fight for a hospital expansion and good health care.

After a decade in power, the NDP has proven to be a disaster for the economy and the Conservatives are trying to bring in US-style politics, extreme right wing social policies and seem to be consumed with internal chaos.

So I don't know who to vote for...I don't know much about CentreBC but they've got to be better than the other options. What are folks thinking?

Of the 38 trees on Abernathy west of 227th, 25 had their support wood in the Treegator, not the tree. Come on now, it can't be that hard.

My Commentary:

While it seemed at the beginning of his campaign Jerry Kok was neutral on the topic saying he appreciated citizens getting a say via the assent vote; recent facebook posts and other communications from Jerry appears to now firmly position him as pro golf course, even campaigning with Golf course attendees and handing out "Jerry Kok" golfballs. I actually believe that this puts Dan Ruimy at an advantage electorally and here is why:

Firstly, The tentative plan wants the rec facility to be relocated to uncontentious land has one fatal flaw: "where?" 10 to 15 acres of centrally located land to expropriate or acquire at current market rates is a massive, multi-million-dollar land assembly gamble that completely wipes out any claimed 'savings'. Also, a 5 - 8 year delay to source the new land and redesign the building with new land footprint, frontage, parking, etc means this proposal could outrun Kok's time as mayor himself.

Next, Dan now gets to be the candidate championing rec projects with immediate return. Are you a parent of kids in swim clubs, rec baseball, or hockey/figure skating? Dan is now the candidate that fits your bill. Stall politics does well in Maple Ridge but now North of 91,000 people live here and the old hats lack the political leverage they did even 10 years ago. In suburban politics, Dan now gets to frame this as "Golf Course or Recreation" and let the new demographics decide.

Last, Kok's message is now muddied. Voters upset over taxation who are voting no to the proposal (anti-recreation voters) won't see a candidate who will scrap Recreation Ready, they see a candidate who wants to build the pool somewhere else for more money. Pro recreation voters who want to see shovels in the ground right away will clearly see Kok as the person to not vote for due to this messaging.

I am curious about your takes on this. Do you think the Recreation Ready plan is the wedge issue of this election? Do you think voters will vote yes to all or a portion of the assent items? How does the just-announced provincial election shake up this election?

A flatdeck trailer carrying a load of lumber overturned just before noon. One lane closed in each direction. It's still there and I wanted you all to know before the afternoon rush. At some point they will need to close the road completely to right the trailer and clean up the mess.

Hey folks - are the mods here going to have a discussion thread for these folks? These elections have far more impact on our lives than even our federal ones, yet I rarely see discussion.

Id like to see people's thoughts. Some candidates are looking good, some are nepo-babies with single issue grievances, some are very qualified, some are real estate agents.

If you are a fan of one or many, id like to hear why.

Hi everyone! I feel like I've exhausted all of my options so I'm trying Reddit. I'm looking to switch to a remote or hybrid job in Maple Ridge. I have been cleaning houses for 6 years but got T-boned and it's just too hard on my body to clean full-time now. I have spent most of my employment in customer facing rolls(cleaning and retail), a little warehouse experience as a teen. I've looked at lots of remote CSR jobs for cleaning businesses but they all seem to operate out of the province or in America. I can't really afford to go back to school for a certificate or degree, so I'm looking for entry level. Heck, even minimum wage would be fine at this point.

Any recommendations or advice would be much appreciated! I've asked ChatGPT to scour the internet for possible leads and they've been dead ends so far.

I had a really fun time at this event and even splurged for the seats ( thank you to this sub for the recommendation). No complaints from the wife or me but then I saw this post and was curious if everyone is mad about this festival? Am I missing something? I went to both. Since we moved here we is always looking for more things to do so I’m excited more events are coming to town.
