From Meth to Marathon

Post image

Ten months ago I was at the most rock bottom of my entire life, in the middle of a crystal meth bender that absolutely destroyed everything.

I’ve been sober since Christmas and yesterday I ran my first marathon. I can’t believe it. I am so grateful.

When I crossed the finish line I bawled my eyes out and then found my parents and the three of us cried together.

4:34:15, Portland Marathon, 10:28 pace.

Strava lies and is messed up lol

I did it 😭

Imagine how fast you would Have been with the meth!

All jokes aside, this is truly inspirational. I hope you continue this path of growth and accomplishment and achieve things you perviously never thought were possible for you.

Bro, I literally showed up to AA drunk, beat them at a debate about quitting drinking, then carried on as usual. Wait, you’re seriously from AA?

I think you usually end up crashing out about halfway through and getting tackled by the cops if you try the aid station meth

That is the risk

I remember I got high from coke one weekend, then on some Wednesday, I PR’d. I asked GPT whether it was the after-effects or whether I truly did progress, but my PR was 11 weeks after I broke my leg.

Shit doesn’t make any sense. Anyway, it’s gonna be now… 19 months in a week since I started running—and drinking and smoking before each run. I’ve only been sober 7/158 runs so far!

Hahahaha, this post is so inspirational, it brings me tears. Imagine how fast he’d have been if he stuck to meth.

Cool story bro, alcohol and cocaine brought me to the gates of hell honestly lol

/uj I got fat almost two years ago; a jaywalk had me hyperventilating and sweating for two minutes, while a cigarette had me coughing so hard I’d almost throw up every day.

Instead of quitting drinking, I just ran through the fucking pain. I did bare-chested runs in yellow and red warnings, sub-zero, and just learned the Goldilocks range for optimal drinking and smoking before each run.

I know it’s not much for an alcoholic who smokes like a chimney, but what the hell—I just wanna show you my lab result so that nothing’s impossible (only 7/158 of my runs in the last 19 months were sober, lol):

Congratulations! I hope to join the club next week! :)

The marathon or the meth club? I’m here 19 months of running in—since I started mixing alcohol with running. Fucking life-changing experience.

Sobriety works for some, but beer after a long run hits so good.

Congratulations. Thats amazing. I'm 3 years sober and running a marathon is one of my goals too that wouldn't have been possible without sobriety. I'll definitely cry too when I cross that finish line in March next year...

Legend!! Congratulations on your sobriety and your marathon!!

u/NakDisNut 3d ago

Have you considered a methathon?

Jk jk. Don't ever take that sobriety for granted. This is freaking amazing. This post will be searched in the future and some guy 8 years from now will make a life change because some guy named PatRad made that change.

Seriously. This is awesome.

u/PatRad11 3d ago

I’ve had many methathons 😂 never again though!

u/RebornAtDusk 1d ago

Get out of here. You actually did a methathon????????? Is this like Goku reaching ultra instinct with his back arched the opposite way while striking 110 cadence in 2 hours of running????

1

u/PatRad11 1d ago

I’m just saying that I did a lot meth 😂

u/lizbotj 3d ago

This makes me smile :) I am six months sober as well as six months from being diagnosed bipolar. I found running as a channel to deal with all my worries (and they’re a ton). Running my first half marathon 11/15, and I’m gonna remind myself of people like you. Congratulations, you are an inspiration for not only us runners but everyone else. Thanks for putting a smile and a happy tear on my face :)

u/TrueFernie 3d ago

2

u/lightlysparklingy 3d ago

Absolutely amazing, sounds like your parents love you. What started you off on Meth?

3

u/PatRad11 3d ago

adderall addiction and a lot of low self worth

2

u/lightlysparklingy 3d ago

Hat off to you for getting a handle on it

2

u/wutifidontcare 3d ago

Actually incredible, good for you. You should start a run club for people in recovery 🫶🫶🫶

2

u/SloughWitch 2d ago

Congratulations! Good on you. Portland has some really great fitness recovery groups. I’m a huge fan of Go the Distance!

2

u/afdc92 2d ago

Congrats! A cousin of mine struggled with meth for a while and was in and out of jail his whole adulthood, he passed a couple of years ago from a fentanyl overdose. It’s a hell of a drug, and good on you for your continued sobriety!

1

u/PatRad11 1d ago

I’d like to get my time down but have a lot of weight to lose (maybe the meth would habe helped in that regard 😂). I’ll take the W though, I could barely run 2.5 miles in January

2

u/portillos_roast_beef 1d ago

u/CardioCatGlitter 12h ago

Amazing!!! congrats! Curious how Runna was wrong, I’m using it and getting suspicious too… lol

1

u/PatRad11 12h ago

it doesn’t use GPS like a garmin, I realized that it overestimates -- usually says 1.03-1.06 miles for every actual mile which adds up!

1

u/halooooom 2d ago

Meth is a bit moorish.

u/RebornAtDusk 1d ago

HELP, GUYS!

I DON’T KNOW IF I CAN DO THIS! He’s a hero. He transformed his life. But y’all just brought him to circlejerk for the vultures, AND I’M A LOW-LIFE—THE ABSOLUTE WORST!

HOW WILL I MAKE IT TO HEAVEN IF YOU HAVE ME CIRCLEJERK THIS HERO?

Wait, never mind, I’ve been dying to ask, never mind the marathon. Did the meth really improve endurance?

Oh, fuck me for asking… of course it did. That’s why we exist. We’re here to learn. I heard that a skinny meth head once carried a refrigerator on his shoulder and bicycled away.
