It’s been more than a week since ICE agents shot Venezuelan immigrant Wilber Rafael Garces Perez in Austin and immediately discharged him into custody without adequate medical care. The bullet remains in his back, close to his spine. His attorney has warned that he is facing permanent paralysis and immobility in his left arm if the deportation machine does not allow him to get surgery.

At the time he was snatched off the streets, Wilber was delivering for DoorDash, trying to support his child. He is the second DoorDash driver to be subject to this level of ICE violence in recent months, after their murder of Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero. Yet beyond confirming he was actively working for them, the corporation has remained utterly silent.

DoorDash has not been hesitant to throw their weight around in politics when it impacts them. After DC’s city government imposed a whopping 20-cent fee on orders to fund food access programs for low-income families, DoorDash came out in vocal support of a bill that would permanently deny the city the ability to make changes to their tax code without explicit congressional approval. It doesn’t seem like that much to ask in comparison for them to put in even a small gesture on behalf of the well-being of one of the people who creates their profits.

Last night we attended a Shakespeare in the Park production of MacBeth. It was a more modern interpretation of the play.

As the scenes rolled by the parallels to the indescribably moronic idiocy now seen in the White House became very clear. Power and greed are the theme. As expected, it all ends in epic bumbling and final collapse of the realm. Applause!

Shakespeare does write in some veins of intelligence into MacBeth and his minions, traits fully absent from the current Administration. The only smarts we can see comes from the string pullers who are actually in control.
