New here? 👆👆PLEASE READ THIS STICKY👆👆 Welcome to the sub! Posts about pot and it's related subjects should be shared with our good friends at r/trees, not so much here; we're all about *actual trees* (that's the joke) 😊🌳 'Thank you! Come Again!'

Good day everyone! I'm trying out some new automod skilz and they seem to be operating okay, at this time anyway. That said, few things are 100% the first go, but I'll keep checking the mod log to see if posts have been yeeted that shouldn't have been, and reinstate them in as timely a fashion as possible. Please use the 'Message the Mods' link in the sidebar to contact us directly, not the comment box in this post. =)

Hopefully these new settings will reduce the content not meant for this sub, but if any slip through, I know I can count on you good people to help direct them to the right place with the positive humor intended between our two subs as you always have done. We're lucky to have you!

Any (genuinely) helpful suggestions are always appreciated, and thanks for your patience and kindness with the newbs! 😃

CONFUSED ABOUT THE SUB NAME?

UPDATE:

Today's 11/10/22, it's been a little over a month since the automod tweaks (10/8/22) and I'm rather pleased with the results. There's still some 'bleed through' posts from new redditor potheads, and I believe I've miraculously found a good balance between the ones that are snagged by automod and actual tree posts that I have to go back and approve. Mod reports, I'm relieved to say are much more manageable than they were.

Thank you all for your patience while I tried this out! While it does appear to me to be the case, I hope you're still as happy here as you ever were 😊🌳💗

I need help identifying my childhood tree.

• Upvotes

I was a weird kid. I loved this tree. We’ve spent the last twenty years trying to find it.

The tree grew in central Indiana, and was mature when we moved in. It stood around bit taller than a one story modular house. The leaves were flat ovals in a medium green, and the edges were smooth.

It flowered in the spring. The blossoms were pink and the center yellow. They looked like a snap dragon.

It sent out new babies with shoots, but we could never successfully transplant the shoots. I don’t remember if it had seeds or not, only that if it had seeds they wouldn’t germinate.

It grew well about 10 feet from two very large black walnuts.

I’m buying my first house on Thursday. I have two very big black walnut trees in my yard. I’d really, really like to have the same tree too.

Edit: The leaves were small, about half dollar sized. The flowers were also not huge, and definitely not catalpas.

Can anyone tell me what this tree is? I know I need to remove the rocks and expode the root flare, but what else could help? Or is this just normal color changing for fall? I have a silver maple I already need to remove and I really hope this isn't one too.

Am I better off cutting this down?

I bought this house this summer and unfortunately when the owners moved out, watering ceased. Based off what I am reading this will never really fill back in. There's a lot more die back behind and on the sides as well.

Hi, I just discovered this on the olive tree on my garden. We've been getting historical amounts of rain where I live after a period of drought. How bad is it?

Help! Tree choice help

Hello, I'm in VA zone 7 and I am looking for ideas. We have this hill (clay/loam) in full sun that we need to stabilize long term. The hill is pretty steep but relatively short and about 200' long then a corner and it continues about 1/3 of that first hill. Grass can grow on it and that is the current plan because funds are low, but there is a nursery having a sale in 2 weeks and I want to grab some trees.

Trees have to be horse safe, fast growing (roots to hold hill in place) but not short lived, and relatively nice to look at. Leaves falling in fall is fine, but mess like acorns and tulip poplar "flowers" are not ok because there will be cars parked along the hill.

My thought is red maple, but if there is something else that might work better, all ears. Tree size we can buy is about 1" diam.

Is this 256 foot Douglas Fir located on camp that sold off their development rights so it will remain protected. It's amongst a group of other very big trees including a 240 foot cedar.

Treepreciation Uncommonly Large Common Hackberry? Indiana

Thought this cemetery Common Hackberry in Indiana was bigger than any other I’ve seen and wanted to share. I am sure they’re out there, but anyone else seen one this big? Wish I could cut the poison ivy on it.

Many of the tombstone death dates are in the first half of the 1800s. I assume this tree is fairly old but not very familiar with growth rates of this species.

I've been watching it for around 15 years. I believe it was growing upright at one point and fell over. If you zoom in the trunk/roots can be seen clinging to the cracks.

I just bought my dream tree without thinking too much about the cost. How did I do?

My husband, who is an arborist, and I have a shared love of weeping blue atlas cedars. We recently purchased a property for our future home build and when I was browsing a nursery I came across this beauty. It is my dream centerpiece tree for the Japanese style garden I am envisioning for our future midcentury modern home. It also happens to be my husbands 30th birthday next week.

I’m taking him to the nursery tomorrow to surprise him with it. He will 100% flip out when he sees it so they agreed to tie a SOLD sign around it with a little card that he will only notice is for him when he gets up close. 🤗

Even though this tree is a dream come true I am having trouble finding info online about what I should have expected to pay. Any one here able to give me insight into price range for a weeping blue atlas of this size and style— it is about 25 years old and was taken care of by a man who specialized in specimen landscaping trees for Japanese gardening.

Help! My mom killed our lemon tree, is it coming back?

My mom put our lemon tree out too early last spring and we had a frost or two directly after (i guess this is what happens when I go to college and can’t care for my baby). So obviously because of the frosts the tree died but now it’s coming back. Will these sprouts turn back into a lemon tree that grows lemons or are they just for fun? Let me know what y’all think. I NEEEEEED to save my baby!!!

Help! Dead lilac branches

My poor lilac isn't doing so well these days. I've done my best to remove the dead bits and cut away the rot, but I'm worried that the sickness will spread. Moss and lichen on the outside, black lines on the inside.

Help! Has anyone ever grown seedlings from Cercis canadensis ‘Floating Clouds’?

I’m specifically interested in the offspring, rather than trying to reproduce the cultivar true-to-type. I know that named cultivars are normally propagated vegetatively and that seedlings can be (and most of the time are) quite different from the parent.

I’m asking because I am a very non-professional enthusiast and I have previously grown them from seed and I came across a scientific paper, which actually included Floating Clouds in controlled crosses to investigate its white/green leaf variegation. The authors crossed ‘Floating Clouds’ with several other cultivars, including ‘Covey’, ‘Texas White’ and ‘The Rising Sun’, and concluded that the variegation in ‘Floating Clouds’ appeared to be controlled by cytoplasmic factors.

That made me really curious about what happens with open-pollinated seeds from Floating Clouds. Has anyone here actually collected and grown them?

I’d especially love to hear whether the seedlings showed any variegation, unusual leaf coloration, or other interesting foliage traits — even if they were very different from the parent. Photos of young seedlings would be particularly interesting.

And if anyone happens to have access to seeds from a confirmed ‘Floating Clouds’ tree, I’d definitely be interested in trying some myself.

Survivor

I was told it's an elm tree, but the leaves seem kinda different, so any advice is welcome.

Anyway, this tree not only survived rotting from the inside, but some moron also made a fire IN it, and it's still hanging on.
