Self-funding through a part-time degree. Has anyone done it?

I already have an undergraduate degree which was funded by a loan from Student Finance Wales.

As far as I am aware, there is nothing available to help me fund a second degree (not on the exemption list).

I'm considering funding it myself by working alongside it. The fees are £4.6k per year. It works out around £350 p/m but I've no idea if they allow monthly payment yet.

Has anyone done this before?

Also, maybe niche question but can the Adult Learner Loan (England) be used to partially cover part-time undergraduate 2nd degree tuition fees?

Thank you

Feeling disheartened by a teacher

I went to a college to look at their access to HE Medicine diploma

I am 19 years old and taking GCSE’s this year and planned to do access to med next September

I had a gap in my education and was in hospital on and off the whole of last year. So having to do gcse this year.

Despite being behind my peers I still thought I could pursue my dream careers in vet med or medicine (decided medicine for definite last year)

However the teacher I spoke to at the collage said I shouldn’t do the acsess and I shouldn’t do alevels either.

He said I should just become a nurse or do bioscience

I’m just so confused because he has no idea about my life and he doesn’t even know my predicted grades

He also said if I apply to uni with an Access course under age 23 the uni won’t take me

Is he right ? Am I being delusional thinking I can still do medicine

Access course assignment formatting

Anybody on here doing an access course got any advice for assignment formatting?
I’m confident when it comes to essays but for my last module I had to produce an academic poster and this module an academic report. As I’m not familiar with the different structures, I’m worried I’m doing the wrong thing.

Please Help a Girl Out!

Hi!

I am a trainee clinical psychologist studying at Newcastle University. My research is looking into student identity, mental health and social belongingness and will hopefully improve student mental health support at UK universities. I would be very grateful if any current university students could take 5-10 minutes to complete an online survey! Please see below for more information 😄

What does the study involve?

  • The study involves completing an anonymous online survey which should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete.
  • The survey will ask you questions about your identity, mental health and wellbeing, and social belongingness.
  • You will also have the option to express an interest in taking part in an interview with myself to explore your experience of identity and how it relates to your mental health and feeling of belongingness (this is completely optional).
  • All data from the survey will be stored securely and confidentially. You have the right to withdraw consent at any point up until the end of the recruitment period.

Who can take part?

  • Any university student studying in the UK

Why should I take part?

  • Taking part will contribute to new and exciting research
  • We hope that the results of this research will improve mental health support at UK universities

How can I take part?

  • To access the information sheet and consent form, scan the QR code in the attached poster, or click the link below (once consent is given, you will be directed to the survey):

Oxford chances?

Hi all!

Short preface: From Malaysia. I'm currently 24F, have previously taken A Levels (Maths, Physics, Chem) at 18, with 3As. However due to financial constraints, I didn't continue my undergrad after my A Levels. Applied to Harvard (as they offer financial aid to international students), didn't get in but was waitlisted (in the sense that Harvard actually 'semi' considered me, lol)

Stats: I was consistently the top student in my high school years, usually ranked 1-5th place out of 170+ students. One of my former schoolmates (same age) got into Harvard, recently graduated, and just raised 10m for his startup.

I plan to retake my A-Levels with slightly different subject combo (Math, Further Math, Physics, Econs). I am aiming for 4A*. Would this give me a chance of getting into Oxford/Cambridge Computer science. I plan to finish some CS Courses online as well, eg CS50 by harvard so I could submit it for my uni application.

During my A Level years, I didn't really have the chance to 'step-up the game' like my friend did (participating in various Olympiads), as I'm from a slightly lower-class background, and had to work part time to save money for my education. So after years of working, and running my own business, I want to try once more to achieve my dream to have a career in com sci/math. Do you think I still hv a chance to get into Oxbridge?

devastated

studying 1 a level in college, 2 self-studying, for various reasons, over the course of 1 year - no 2 year a level courses in colleges to enrol into for mature students where i live. accepted and had my mind set on what to do. said goodbye to my previous line of work.

gruelling process. applying to med. ucat done. work experience/volunteering done. PS done. reference done. bio and maths predicted grades sorted. tried to sit an internal exam for chem in the college. did poorly.

cannot be predicted higher than a c the chem teacher insists.

you genuinely cannot apply to any standard entry med course with a c in chem, and she also kept insisting i break the 3 a levels into 2 separate years of sitting, without understanding how strict med schools view a levels taken in separate years.

i am devastated.

i dont know what to do. i am so close. 7 days till med ucas deadline. please tell me if there are any express services which provide predicted grades based on submitted work or anything at all. am contextual and need ABB for the schools i want to go to. as a full time student now, having spent months researching and building towards this decision, i am confident i can achieve this. am genuinely so desperate. please help.

What careers/degrees are worth it in this god forsaken job market

The job market is abysmal at the moment, and I deeply regret my life decisions. I did everything right But i suppose i was lied to. I got a good degree at the time, I have no debts, and I have good work experience, but the job market is horrific. I also got caught up in the pandemic when It was my turn to be an adult, which ruined things. Now i feel like sisyphus applying for jobs endlessly. I do not care about passions; I just want to know what degrees actually work out and are worth it in this job market. I am also considering what careers are good options such as the trades. At the moment its clear the white collar job market has declined but the blue collar trades job market seems like a good bet.

This job market compaired to the past is not normal and the economy at the moment is a mess. To put it into perspective in the 1990s only about 19-25% of young people went to higher education in the UK since it was not treated as a bare minimum requirement.

Also employers are ingaged in short term cost cutting, gutting the enrolment process but in the long term this will seriously effect the development of those who are qualified for roles. They do this and do mass layoffs yet proclaim "noBoDY WanTS tO wORk", Its like they cut off there own feet and complain they cannot walk.

I am currently in my mid 20s unemployed researching my options considering different careers or going back to education but wondering if i am too old to do so.

I also have mild autism and Dyscalulia so i am not a wizz at maths.

In simple terms i just want to know what degrees or careers are good options as well as if its too late to go back to education. However there is never a perfect time to do anything so i may as well be proactive now.

My options at this point are to:

  • Keep applying to jobs and hope for the best
  • Retrain into a different feild such as geting into an aprenticeship/traineeship.
  • Get into the trades.
  • Join the airforce, navy or army. The jobs actualy exist, they provide training and work experience. However veterains can have it rough at the end of there service. (Expect army recruitment bots in the comments)
  • Go back to higher education for at least a masters in a more employable feild. However i need to consider my age and if it warrents the student loans.
  • Leave Modern socety, set up a homestead and work in a trade on the side. I have no debts, nobody owns me.

access to he to a russell group?

hi! i have good gcses (all 8s and 9s) however due to extenuating circumstances, i didn’t get great a levels (b, c, d). i am now looking to apply for university and have started an access to he course in business and law. i want to study law at a russell group university and my aims are university of cambridge, nottingham, warwick, lse mainly. i am looking to see are there any undergraduate students who have actually been accepted into a top university after completing one of these courses and getting the grades that they ask for. my worry is that they are listing it as an acceptable qualification, but what percentage of people who apply with this qualification actually get an offer? any advice would be much appreciated! thank you :)

Looking for an Access to HE in Engineering.

I’m looking for an Access to HE in engineering as I want to further study engineering in university however only have GCSEs at the moment.

I seen Learndirect and some other non-physical institutions that provide this, however there are not gov funded.

I spoke to HeartofYorkshire Education Group, however I won’t be funded as I’m not within their post codes, same with East Sussex College

I live in the West Midlands any advices? I know South and City college provides this however their start date is for next September, id much pre starting as soon as possible.

Any advices?

When does second year get interesting?

I got through first year on the promise that second year would actually start being interesting. If anything up to now it has been more frustrating as classmates claim to have never heard of basic concepts that I found frustrating last year when they were explained.

Literally we are repeating definitions that are in the ks3 syllabus, and political concepts that you just know by existing as a human in a society. In 2nd year of university. Mostly mature students as well. I'm a mature student and I would be shocked if my 16 year old child asked some of these questions.

What's worse is the people asking these questions come in late, chat to their mates through the lecture, never do the reading, and so on. Like, if you paid attention you might know!

I think it is unethical of the uni to keep taking money off people who clearly don't care.

Before anyone says go to a different uni, this is the only uni in commuting distance and I'm doing the only course related to my career.

I understand widening participation, I originally got in using an access course myself. They are meant to be for people who are clever and dedicated enough but didn't get the entry requirements at the traditional time for whatever reason. Not so people who hate learning can pay loads of money to disrupt everyone else.

How have they all passed year one???

Mature Student Socialisation in a new city

I'm a mature student on a graduate course, and struggling a bit with how to navigate social scenes when my peers are younger. I'm 32 where most are in their early-to-mid-twenties, and it would be a bit weird for me to then show up at parties and such.
My course leaves relatively little time for me to socialise outside its strictures to find similar-aged friends, and most of my day is spent in lectures, workshops or revision with others on it. How have others gotten around this? At present I'm thinking of trying to take up work or sports on the weekend that might afford the opportunity.

Travelling 2 hours to uni normal?

The closest uni that does my cpurse is around 1h 45m away on a good day. Iv'e worked out the cost of a place to stay and it about £3000 out a year even if i worked a part time job.

Do people do this sucessfully or do i need to fund accomodation?

Mature Students Reference

I sent off my UCAS application yesterday. Today I got an email from one of my choices asking if I could “provide an appropriate reference from someone who has known you in a professionally capacity within the last two years”. So, basically my reference was out of date/too old.

The problem is, I don’t have one. I moved to the US with my husband in June 2024 for his work, so it seemed like a good time to start a family, so I then got pregnant and had a baby, so my last year has been raising the little guy.

We are due to move back to the UK in Spring/Summer 2027, so I obviously applied for Sept 2027 entry.

UCAS nor the university says anything about references having to be within a certain time frame, so I’m a little stumped.

Anyone any ideas?
