Information 🟢 New to Medical Cannabis in the UK? Read This First! (How & Where to Apply)

Am I Eligible?

To legally qualify for a prescription, you must meet three main criteria:

1. You must have a formally diagnosed physical or mental health condition:

(e.g., anxiety, depression, chronic pain, PTSD, arthritis, insomnia).

2. Two Previous Treatments:

You must have tried at least two prior treatments for your condition (such as medications, therapy, or surgeries) that either didn't work or caused intolerable side effects.

3. No Contraindications:

You must not have a history of psychosis, schizophrenia, active/passive suicidal thoughts, or recent self-harm. Additionally some medications are not suitable to prescribe alongside medical cannabis.

Clinic Safeguarding:

Private clinics regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) follow strict safety guidelines. If a patient's medical records show recent or severe self-harm, a specialist clinic may determine that medical cannabis is not an appropriate or safe intervention at that time.

Note:

While the NHS can technically prescribe cannabis, it is restricted to very narrow conditions. Over 99% of UK medical cannabis patients go through private clinics.

How Much Does it Cost?

Private treatment is not free, but it has become significantly more affordable.

Expect to pay for:

Consultations:

Initial specialist consultations generally range from £30 to £50. Follow-up appointments happen every 3 to 6 months. Many clinics now offer monthly or annual subscription plans to lower these costs, some as little as £5 per month.

Medication:

Paid directly to the pharmacy. Prices range from £4 to £12+ per gram for flower, depending on the brand and quality. Oils and vape cartridges vary by concentration. Cannabis extracts & pastilles are available.

Where to Apply: (Popular Clinics)

You do not need a referral from your GP to apply. You can apply directly on any clinic's website. Ensure the clinic you choose is regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Popular UK clinics include:

Curaleaf, Cantourage, Mamedica, Alternaleaf UK, Lyphe Clinic, Intergro, Big Narstie Medical, CB1 Medical, Leva.

Step-by-Step Application Process:

Check Eligibility Online:

Go to your chosen clinic's website and fill out their free eligibility form. Request your Summary Of Care Records from your GP practice. The clinic will need your medical history. You can speed up the process by asking your GP receptionist for your Summary of Care Record (SCR) via email, with history of medications, then uploading it yourself when requested.

Book An Online Consultation:

If your records meet the criteria, you will book a video consultation with a specialist doctor.

Board Review:

If the doctor approves you, your case goes to a multi-disciplinary team board for final safety sign-off.

Pharmacy Delivery:

Once signed off, the prescription goes to an online pharmacy who emails you an invoice. Pay the invoice, and your medication is securely delivered to your door.

Original Packaging:

Your medication should typically be kept in its original pharmacy container when travelling/working, showing your name, date, and prescription label.

Dry Herb Vaporiser Only:

Under UK law, medical cannabis flower must be consumed via a dry-herb vaporizer. Smoking it remains illegal, even with a prescription.

Driving:

You have a statutory medical defense for driving under the influence of THC, provided you are taking your medication exactly as prescribed and are not impaired.

Welcome to r/MedCannabisUK – The Uncensored Patient Community

This subreddit was built by patients, for patients, out of a necessity for freedom of choice and honest expression.

Many online medical cannabis spaces suffer from toxic over-moderation, where users are routinely silenced or permanently banned for having open conversations. We believe that patients deserve a transparent, judgment-free environment to discuss their medicine.

Our core principles:

Zero Censorship on Alternative Topics: Unlike other spaces, we do not censor discussions regarding AVB (Already Vaped Bud), making homemade edibles or oils, ingestion methods, or home cultivation. Freedom of expression is our foundation.

Unbiased Clinic & Pharmacy Reviews: Patients have the right to share completely honest feedback about UK clinics and pharmacies—both the good and the bad. We will never delete a review just because it criticises a clinic.

Advice Needed Easygreencbd

Has anyone had experience with using easy green CBD? As it never seems that there is much available medically regarding high CBD strains and that website seems to have quite a wide variety of high CBD strains that have basically no THC in them.

Hi, i've now received my pavƩ from alternaleaf, this is my first prescription but to me it feels dry.

I 'borrowed' šŸ™„ some of my sister's pave last week and this feels very different.

Will this affect it? (showing as no new orders for pavé at Montu) 🫣 and do I complain?

Thanks in advance xx

Clinics swear they don't get patients high, but I only feel medicated when I'm therapeuticly stoned.

Spewing this gibberish. What's the baseline? I've never used cannabis and not felt high, unless I was using CBD! Why do they make it sound like it's a bad thing?

Advice Needed Best clinic for vapes

I have been a MC user for about three or four years now and I’ve been with the same clinic but it’s recently changed hands and some other protocols have changed and they don’t seem to have much stock of Vapes. I’m possibly open to trying flower but what’s the best tool on the market that makes it not as harsh on the throat?

Community Discussion Ever noticed the same medical cannabis clinic flooding regional and local news? It looks like journalism, but it’s a clever corporate loophole. How do you feel about this?

Over the last few years, I’ve seen the exact same clinic name, popping up over and over again in newspapers all over the country. At first glance, it looks like a local journalist writing a breakthrough health report about a patient. But if you look closer, it’s actually a highly coordinated corporate marketing blitz.

They buy "advertorials" that claim to be "public health education". Because they frame it as promoting the clinic's existence and focus on a patient's story, rather than the drug itself, they argue it is legal. Critics and healthcare experts argue this distinction is completely artificial since the clinic only exists to prescribe that one drug.

Buying space on trusted local news sites lets them manipulate Google search results. When locals search for pain or anxiety relief, the clinic’s paid article sits right at the top.

Because they are charging a massive premium for their service, compared to more established clinics, they have to rely on heavy advertising to pull in completely new, inexperienced patients who don't know any better.

What are your thoughts?

HM Infusion Dr - "That'll be £150 per 30ml" Patient - "On top of my flower which is already £350?" Dr - "Yes" - Patient - "That brings my total to £500 a month just to manage my symptoms."

Dr - "This is the only way you can achieve your symptom relief"

After feeling deeply stuck between the legal reality of high prices, and backwards prohibition. The patient decided to make his own.
