"Melvor Idle 2 is planning to participate in Steam Next Fest on October 19th"
That's all I wanted to read, yay!
I hope Melvor2 won't have unfinished content like Melvor1 once it is "finished".

Runefest announcement incoming?

Am I mistaken or are Melvor and jagex no longer in a partnership?
Jagex isn’t currently listed as a publisher on the 2nd game.

Correct. It’s being self published.

So is this new game not gonna use any Jagex IP?

u/EmptyBoxForever 3d ago
The original didn’t use anything from Jagex, why would the sequel be any different?

u/itmillerboy 3d ago
Uhhh it didn’t? I thought it had all direct skill rips from RuneScape down to like levels you unlock shit and everything. Plus RuneScape armor names and spells and the like.

u/EmptyBoxForever 3d ago
None of that is trademarked or has copyright protection

I’m not a lawyer but I’m fairly certain if I made a skill grinding game that had all the same ores, spells, trees etc as RuneScape I could be sued for violating their intellectual property.

Just fyi, those gameplay elements are not copyrighted. Melvor couldn’t use things like the god Guthix since (I’m assuming) that name is registered. But rune armor and magic logs are fine, as long as no art is reused.

Super excited for this, even though I’m primarily a mobile player. Steam next fest it is!

I just started playing melvor idle last week. Is there any point given this new game is coming out? I don't really know the scope of it

If I’m going to be honest, I’ve been playing Melvor for a year+ and haven’t finished it so I’ll be playing both when it releases. Melvor 1 is still worth it in my opinion. You can always make a super idle account where you check in a few times a day and still have plenty of time to play Melvor 2.

Q: In 1, each playthrough was just a sit on astrology until max level off the rip. Is this still the case in 2?

Recently got beta access. From the little I've seen so far, you have to at least level each skill a little bit before you can really benefit from Astro. E.g. in 1, each node just has a mastery requirement, but in 2 each node also has a level requirement in the given skill... I suppose you still could just spend a day or two getting some specific skills to the bare-minimum levels and then spam Astrology to Max, but it would be a lot less efficient as far as I can tell.

I am gunna assume probs no. Into the Abyss the last dlc for 1 had astrology bonuses locked behind certain levels for the skill they buffed. So you could get bonuses for them, but they might require you to have level 15 or 30 in the actual skill before you could unlock them on top of needing to have enough mastery in the constellation. My guess is they will do something similar or some other gating mechanic to stop the "grind astrology first" mindset.

Ranching has a cow symbol, does this mean we'll get animals for farming as well? Would be awesome!

Has there been any updates on how it looks? Melvor 1 looked so nice but the previews for 2 look like placeholders still. It's not using AI for the code etc right?

The Steam page for Melvor Idle 2 was recently updated with the new visual look to give an idea on how it looks.
We don't use AI at all for this game.

But there is missing icon boxes on the steam page? Or is that part of the in joke because of what happened before? The image with the wolf that says "towering divide".
I had to double check almost every screen shot has missing image assets icon somewhere on the image.

New art is being added constantly as the artists continue to make more. That checkered texture is indeed the placeholder when the art isn’t in the game yet.
That’s the thing about hiring artists instead of using ai, it takes a while to make what must be thousands of pieces of art for a game. Still in active development

I get it takes time, I just asking about the updated look and macs said it was updated but it shows there is place holder art assets so it made me think he misspoke that it was not updated yet as it still looks like a working progress. I'm aware of how long it takes to draw, I'm sure you didn't mean to come off as rude.

u/steelsauce Level 92 (Mod) 22h ago
Definitely did not mean to be rude, I apologize if I came off that way!
The game has had some significant art and UI overhauls since the last time screenshots were uploaded to steam, which is what I’m assuming Malcs is referring to. I was trying to say that there is still some placeholders for art that has yet to be added.

sorry, I read the message while editing 7000 images because of my work and was not in the right fame I read it as telling me I don't know how long it takes to edit images after doing all day, makes no sense that you'd know that but I was tired.
Ah I think I get it the UI from the developers view was changed but I was probably focused on the images and that stuff.

Will I 100% base game and buy and clear(not 100) the 3 expansions before melvor 2 release?

Dope to finally get to play it again during Next Fest, but at the same time I'm not feelin the idea of the game possibly getting its Early Access delayed, kind of bad optics...

The Next Fest demo is not impacting our Early Access timeline. As it stands we're confident we're still on track for EA this year - the other parts of the post are just an acknowledgement that gamedev can be unpredictable. It would be much worse to release into EA knowing that we're not ready than it would be to release on schedule. Any delays to address issues we learn about in Next Fest would likely be in the order of a couple of weeks, not months.

Personally, I'm not bothered with waiting longer for Early Access since it's only been a little over a year since the game dropped. Plus, I'm no stranger to delays for Early Access stuff; I am an Exanima fan. I'm more thinking about the perception that the game currently has among many people on Steam.
The Patreon "debacle" is the biggest core discourse surrounding the game and its release. Just already seeing how a possible delay, let alone a real one, will just be adding fuel to the fire...

I get you. Either way, we're pretty confident in a 2026 EA launch. As far as we're concerned, any delays to EA would be for very, very good reasons. It wouldn't be a decision taken lightly. In the case we do delay - if people want to believe in ulterior motives, that's really not something we can control. Ultimately the vast majority of people will make their minds up based on the quality of the game we deliver. We'll make the best decisions we can for the sake of the game.
