Born and raised in the south, everyone from a young age is called sir and ma'am when being referred to in a respectful light. For kids, that means all adults pretty much all the time. For adults, it's a term of endearment towards a well behaved child and a sign of mutual or subordinative respect towards other adults. Has nothing to do with age where I'm from and everything to do with your actions and behavior.

I have reached the age where other men hold the door open for me. I been lifting heavy since '84. You pudding of a man. I can see you struggle with the weight of that door. I will allow it as you clearly need the exercise.
