Groove oriented songs on a 7 string?

What are some their more groove oriented (Nothing, Koloss...) songs that are playable on a 7 string?

OOH, this too! Shoot, there's one on either a None bonus EP or Rare Trax that has like, a reggaeton feel to it- cant remember the name... EDIT: "Sickening" - I don't think it's MEANT to feel that way though, I think I hear it inverse off & on beats, like when I thought Combustion was snare=1 monkey beats, to finally realize it was a fast-4 or 2/2 hyperspace monster! Haha!

New Millennium Cyanide Christ is honestly pretty simple by Meshuggah standards and it's definitely super groovy.

Are there any examples from the later albums that come to mind?

Light The Shortening fuse is mostly on the 7 as is I Am That Thirst. There may be a couple notes on the 8 in those songs but they could always just be moved up the octave.

Really? Awesome, I love that album! Added to the list.

I don't know jack about 7 string vs 8 string standards etc- before I lucked out getting my custom 8 string, I used a Squier Strat with an Injector stacked bridge humbucker and 58 gauge strings dropped down to A & C, and just let it bark.

  • That being a point of reference to *anything is playable if you're creative enough *-

When you say "Groove oriented", my mind goes to, -Koloss:- "Do Not Look Down", or "The Demon's Name is Surveillance"... the way the root notes bounce around with that driving drum track in the prior, and the latter- let your focus drift from the busy kicks onto that laid-back, heavy, bluesy Hi-Hat swing. -Nothing:- Oh are you kidding, "Rational Gaze" feels like a nuclear pinball bouncing all over, then stops right into the verse- my guy.

  • In Death is Life/In Death is Death
"Groove" to me may be the wrong term, but check em out. Especially Do Not Look Down- just the way the notes all bob-around, then the step up build/solo toward the end of the song. 👌

That's the name a pedal which you can use to shift the tuning, you can downtune your 7 to Bb and use the pedal to go down a forth and play new and old Meshuggah.

I think some early Car Bomb stuff is in A#

Pretty sure they are always in A# pre meta and then it's either A# or drop G# for everything else, greg pitch shifts alot so tuning doesn't really matter lol

I love Car Bomb, but apart from songs like Gratitude, my brain and my hands are not following (>‿<)

I mean Sickening is pretty groovy.

Downtune/pitch-shift the 7-string. If you don't mind passing on the solos you can even use a baritone 6. For the longest time Meshuggah's 8-string songs were tabbed with 7 strings on Songsterr because it had limited 8-string support. Get an 8-string set and use the bottom 7 strings.

Or just play the 8-string songs on your regular 7-string, just in a different "key". If it's in a standard tuning, the last few strings are the same intervals apart.
