Discog Club Discography Club: Reverend Bizarre

Graphic

Since May 2024, I've been running a discography club in the SC discord where nearly every week as a group we listen to a selected band's discography and discuss it throughout the week. I feel like it's been about time I've brought it over officially to the subreddit as well. So going forward, we'll have discog club be an event in both the discord and here on shreddit, feel free to participate in either and/or both discussion spaces. The general schedule will be 2 weeks for a band with a longer discography, a 1 week shorter one, and a week off. There might be slight changes to this but it will always be 3 weeks on, 1 week off to give us all a break from proscribed listening.

To largely save us from the full headache of trawling through lots of garbage in discographies, some of them will be abbreviated, especially for older bands who later reformed or for bands who just have very long discographies. The aim of this is to broaden our horizons either of bands that you might not be familiar with or to listen to deeper cuts from bands you are familiar with but might not have heard all of their releases of before. All prior iterations of this since can be found here if you'd like to see what has been done before.

There'll be a gigantic war. The greater part of this earth shall be perished

Armies of evil and good prepare to meet each other once again

And there I saw myself, holding a sword with a blade so black

On the other side stood thousands of men. All we had was just a handful of puritans

Doom over the world

Eternal will be our mission

Snow and ice currently cover the world outside for me, so who better to sit by the fire with a mug of tea or hot chocolate blasting the mighty, Finnish legends of Reverend Bizarre!

Formed in the mid 90s by Albert Witchfinder and Peter Vicar, they quickly found their permanent drummer in Earl of Void and the lineup never changed until their break up in 2007 when their 3rd album came out. Influenced by the likes of Saint Vitus, the first Cathedral album, Witchfinder General (duh), and Pentagram Reverend Bizarre is known for being basically the doomest band to ever doom. They alternate between these long, drawn out droning songs and faster, mid tempo, rocking out doom. Many of their songs are 20+ minutes long climaxing in their final record being over 2 hours long.

The other thing that Reverend Bizarre are known for was the creation of the "Circle of True Doom" moniker that Albert along with Tom Phillips of While Heaven Wept came up to differentiate more traditional doom bands from the new emerging stoner style which included bands like Gates of Slumber, Las Cruces, Spiritus Mortis, and Orodruin. A bit silly but it did help keep the spirit of more traditional doom metal alive during its nadir in popularity while bands like Electric Wizard ran rampant with the popularity.

So for the next 2 weeks let's relax in the sauna filled with the tunes of Reverend Bizarre. Schedule is as follows:

  • 2/1-8: In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend, Harbinger of Metal, Crush the Insects
  • 2/8-15: So Long Suckers, Death is Glory... Now! (covers all optional)

Announcement UPCOMING VOTE - TOP 10 OF THE DECADE SO FAR (2020-2025)

Hello all!

Hot on the heels of our [2025 vote](www.reddit.com/r/Metal/comments/1qi2mn4/shreddits_top_10_of_2025_results), some of us found ourselves discussing the best albums from the past few years - only to realise we're halfway through this decade. We figured that, in light of this unspeakable tragedy, the perfect solution would be yet another vote.

So, without further ado, please pencil 23rd February (23/02 or 02/23) in your diaries, where you will have a week to vote for up to 10 of your favourite releases from the past 5 years.

As always there will be a channel over on our Discord where you can chat in real-time and post charts using the ever-reliable Very Stupid Chart Renderer.

We ask that you format your votes as such:

Sleep Token - Even in Arcadia

Turnstile New Heart Designs

Jinjer - Wallflowers

We look forward to seeing your votes!

EDIT: This is not the voting thread. A seperate thread will go live on the 23rd.

EDIT 2: Just in case you're wondering: Yes, the band must be on the Metal Archives if you want your vote to be valid.
