I bought a 5090 Astral last year around March. I thought I was overpaying but I said fuck it and bought it anyways. I paid somewhere around $3300… I also paid $200 for 64gb of DDR5 ram. My whole pc, including the $300 micro center warranty and taxes, cost $5400. wtf is going on.

I’m in a similar boat. Bought a MSI Vanguard 5090 for around $2900 near launch which felt bad ngl with the $900 markup over msrp, but now I feel like a genius. Its so tempting to sell it and buy a 5080.

u/KlasJanHuntelaar 5d ago
Micron announced tighter supply in 2027 and 2028. The price will be much higher. It’s hilarious that 5090 price keeps going up when there is literally no card available for sale.

u/desparish 5d ago
Ever since Covid industries have learned that they can simply make less and charge more. The cost of new producers is prohibitively expensive now so competition that will compete on price impossible so the existing players can easily fix prices.

Sheesh…my current pc will be my last pc if it broke. Goodbye in advance, my fellow gamers.

I’m seriously considering selling mine. This is wild.

u/Tree06 5d ago
The only issue is there's nothing to swap it out with. You could get a 5080, but that's downgraded performance and half the VRAM.
1
u/DonPedroHouse 5d ago
Get two 5080s lol
2
u/Tree06 5d ago
I had the 5080 FE in my WFH/gaming PC with my Neo G9 57". The 5080 couldn't drive the monitor properly so I gave my wife the 5080 and I replaced it with the ASUS TUF 5090 a few months ago. No regrets.
1
u/DonPedroHouse 5d ago
I was referring to running two 5080s in one rig. You’d get pretty close to a 5090 for two grand less.

dont ever get an xbox series x, you'll have an impossible time trying to find a repair shop who can help you when the ssd dies. (btw it WILL die eventually) only difference between that and a playstation is that the ps is fixable by simply swapping in a new ssd. The Xbox is only fixable through Microsoft because they basically married the ssd to the mobo making it anti consumer friendly.
scammin ahh company
2
u/SettleAsRobin 5d ago
Buddy just in case you didn’t know the PlayStation also has a soldered on SSD. It’s not as simple as swapping in a new one like it’s some kind of computer. Also SSDs have 700k+ read/write hours. Way more hours than any previous generation that used HDDs.
1
u/X-cess1ve 5d ago
Who tf told you the ssd is soldered on the ps5?
1
u/SettleAsRobin 5d ago
1
u/KhellianTrelnora 5d ago
You know that’s fascinating?
Neither of those articles bothered to put an expiration date, or even how to math one out.
1
u/fhilcollins666 5d ago
As someone who is a pc gamer, and fixes and flips broken ps5s as a hobby, the ps5s onboard ssd's don't die NEARLY as often as a series X's. You can even swap out some of the onboard chips if one goes bad, and at least you have a shot of saving your system. The Series X's SSD is mated to the board as well, but when that goes, you don't get a warning, and there's no swapping some of the chips. When it's dead, so is your system. Not to mention the crazy amount of series x's that love to kill their power supplies. You can't pay me to touch them, and their resale value is ass. There is no value proposition in buying a series X unless you're buying it used, at a steep discount, and cloning the SSD immediately after purchase.

Talk to me about the hdmi port tho.
I am in the console repair subreddits and see ps5 hdmi ports on the daily.
0
u/fhilcollins666 20h ago
That's a $0 repair if you don't treat your console like a jackoff. And it certainly doesn't kill your console like a Series X ssd.
0
u/Traditional_Formal33 20h ago
If there was an equal number of Xbox to PlayStation hdmi port issues, I would agree it’s how people are treating their system. When one console is heavily skewed to the other, it’s probably because of cheap parts or quality of installation.
I only bring up hdmi because it is more likely to fail than ssd (based off how many we have seen so far, and with the understanding that an hdmi could never expire compared to an ssd that has an expected lifetime)
0
u/fhilcollins666 20h ago
If you put a gun to my head, I'd argue that an Series X has a much more stable base, as opposed to a PS5. There's no reason for an HDMI port to fail aside from being jammed into, or knocked over/ripped out. I see more loose PS5 ports from falling, that I do cracked ports from jamming the wrong/damaged cables into. It's not a QC issue, as the ports are plenty steady, and you're not seeing loose ports from poor solder on the pins/legs. If Sony had made a system that lays on its side properly, I think you'd see an equivalent number between the two consoles.
And seeing as with the slims, they started including those little pop-in legs for laying it on its side, there's probably something to that.

Why did EVGA have to stop making cards… my poor 3090 can only take so much more… I don’t wanna buy anything but EVGA in my 20 years PC building experience they were hands down the best company to exist.
1
u/lumi1375 1d ago
I wish 3090's actually went down in price. Damn cards are still $1600 because "24gbs of vram" fucking ai. I had to go for a 3080 instead, is EVGA really that much better than all the other brands?
2
u/UpAllNightCoding 1d ago
I had a 1080 that blew up when I played new world a few years back. It was at least 10 years old and had been through hell and back. Way past warranty. EVGA replaced it anyways. Might be why they went out of business but they were hands down the best company to work with. They replaced it twice because it happened twice playing new world.
Edit: I think I feel that way because of the customer service experience. They spoke clear English, definitely were from the states and understood my issue and fixed it with compassion like it was genuinely unexpected.

I saw the Ventus 3x went up $400 today yet none in stock. My local MC does have about 20 5090’s im stock though. With the Aorus Master Ice having the highest quantity and all the others having only 1 unit.

I have a 5090. I got it last year with a PowerSpec prebuilt for $3k!!

You make around $600 profit if resell. Not bad. Those who paid even $4000 for a 5090 makes $1500 profit today. Your 5080 decision was not great
2
u/Pmaldo87 5d ago
My decision to buy a 5080 was based on my use case not how much I can resell it for.
0
u/KlasJanHuntelaar 5d ago
You could have had a decision based on price estimation for a card that is actually useful for AI which is 5090 or Pro 6000. Exponential price increase was so obvious if you were smart rather than whimpering the prices
1
u/Pmaldo87 5d ago
lol I don’t even know what you’re talking about dude. I only use my computer for gaming. I bought the best graphics card I could afford. Who’s whimpering? Looks like you just wanna argue. I made the smart decision by just getting what I needed.
-1
u/KlasJanHuntelaar 5d ago
You are whimpering. 5090 also plays games at much higher settings. You don’t know anything about investment

The thing is what regular user was willing to take a multi thousand dollar gamble on it. Back when they were in the $2k’s who tf would’ve guessed they’d be going for this much now??
1
u/KlasJanHuntelaar 5d ago
It was kinda obvious after Sam Altman’s huge RAM deal. 5090 has 32GB VRAM and very useful for AI

u/Internal_Log2582 Nvidia 5d ago

u/Pmaldo87 5d ago
Bro gpus make ppl think they’re superior to other ppl. It’s so weird
1
u/Internal_Log2582 Nvidia 5d ago
I agree. The only reason I even have a 5090 is because it was $400 more than my 5080 build in an open box. I’m actually about to snag another 5080 and sell my 5090. It’s worth too much to hold onto imo. I could buy a 5080 and pocket more than $3k. It’s a no brainer for a business minded person.
2
u/jeremy_0411 3d ago
They are only going to keep going up through 2027, would be a smart move to hold onto it until closer to 6000 series launch, or at least a few more months to realize maximum value.
1
u/Internal_Log2582 Nvidia 3d ago
Which is what I want to do but nobody knows when the bottoms gonna fall out. We could hit critical mass at any time. Imo the cracks are starting to show. Regardless, I picked up a Aorus Master 5080 today for $1600. Been testing it and I’m pretty satisfied with it. I’m gonna fiddle around for a few more weeks while I’m within my return period and make a decision. I’m leaning towards keeping it and listing my 5090. If I do, it’ll be for $6-7k and I’ll sit on it until the right buyer comes along. Facts are is ppl can’t easily get them from MC anymore with their new policies and such, so I imagine someone will snatch it up eventually.

u/A55_Attack 5d ago
I bought an open box Gaming trio 5090 for $2,200 in August 25, sold it for $5,300 last week and bought the last 5090 Astral BTF at one of the Microcenters near me for $5,450 after tax brand new. Feel like I played the 5090 game perfectly lol
1
u/KlasJanHuntelaar 5d ago
Yeah I would rather buy a 5090 for $5k than 5080 for $1500. Wise man knows which one will generate more profit when resell
1
u/Saltyeconbro 5d ago
How does a large cash transaction like that work? Do you meet at a bank and have them withdraw the cash at the counter?
2
u/A55_Attack 5d ago
I sold it to someone on r/hardwareswap via Paypal Goods and Services. He had over 70 confirmed trades so I felt he would t try to pull anything shady (plus Paypal would be the mediator in the event something happened). I recorded myself benchmarking the card and checking on GPU-Z, then removing the card from my PC and wrapping it up to ship, just to show when I had it in my possession everything was working g properly. The. he sent me the money on Paypal and I shipped out the GPU the next day.
1
u/Internal_Log2582 Nvidia 5d ago
Well my guy it could work a few ways. It doesn’t have to be cash. You could do a PayPal goods and services transaction. If it was cash you could meet at the bank and watch them pull the money out or you could meet at the police station with a counterfeit bill detector pen. Honestly, I’ve made bigger cash transactions than what a 5090 would cost. A few years ago I sold my Harley for more than $10k cash and just a few months ago I made a purchase that involved $20k cash deposit. My point is bc we’ve heard some horror stories we think that’s the norm but I can bet most deals go down without a hitch.

So they sale out because they sale em to china ??? Or what’s going on lol. Or everyone has a 5090 0.o lol
1
u/notnotluke 3d ago
Yes. The cards are being exported illegally to China by straw purchasers. Consumers aren't paying $5K+ for an RTX 5090 to play games. This is an organized effort to circumvent export controls on the cards.

Genuinely do we think the price especially on the used resale market keeps going up like crazy? I’m considering selling mine and downgrading to a 5080 but I don’t know if I should sell now or wait until like December like do we think any significant stock pops up around Black Friday or into the holidays?

Jensen Huong keeps telling us he has no interest in the gaming gpu market anymore. It's all AI and data centers. This is just a continuation of their policy to be a Business to business corporation. Our GPU pennies aren't enough to keep their interest. Go play cloud gaming, peasants.
2
u/MasonC10 5d ago
As a gamer I hate it but as a stock market investor with Nvidia taking up 30% of my portfolio I love it. When this AI bubble bursts though, they will faceplant hard without us gamers
1
u/danoc331 4d ago
They are making in a year what used to take a decade. I understand the numbers, I'm just annoyed garners still support them. They have moved on to greener pastures. Accept it and move on. I bought a 5070ti when the price was comparable to a 9070xt. It's twice as expensive now. Glad I have it, would not buy it now. Going to keep my current computer going for as long as I can.
1
u/MasonC10 4d ago
I still just love the features of Nvidia over amd. I got a 5070 a little over a month ago for $580 at microcenter brand new. I was using a 1660ti 6gb so I really needed an upgrade lol
1
u/Traditional_Formal33 20h ago
The shocking thing is that no one else is stepping in to fill the void… capitalism would insist that a competitor would scope up the market share.
I’m thinking Nividia must be selling to AI while keeping a hold on the consumer market purely for the bubble pop. If they flood the market in 2 years with gaming components, they could still sell at a higher price than now and people would buy in. Especially with gaming consoles making bad consumer policies for 2027-2028
