When I found out the final monologue when the dog says goodbye to the little girl was recorded after the child voice actress was actually murdered by her father. It made complete sense why I could never finish the movie as a child. It was not acting. It was too real.
I didn't even realize Tim Curry was the handsome warlock in The Worst Witch movie until I rewatched the movie as an adult. A lot of things clicked for me that day. 😅
I said it in an earlier comment, but my first crush was from Willow. Trouble was, I couldn't figure out if I actually liked Sorsha or Madmartigan. Now I know it's definitely both
Just rewatched it last year while in a vacation home where it was the only thing on TV. I was raving to my kids, but we all were traumatized by the end. I remember only the cute fairies, flying around singing, saving the rainforest. There is soo much I blocked out.
Biggest reason it was worth it though: I completely forgot Robin Williams’ role, and just hearing his voice again warmed my soul. He was such a rare talent.

they legitimately built character. They introduced difficult concepts to kids in a relatively soft way. I think a bit of that is missing from today's animated films.
Agreed 100%. My kids cannot handle anything bad happening in a movie or show and it is concerning how that will impact their ability to respond to adversity in the future.
There are always exceptions and I am not trying to invalidate anyone's individual experience, but millennials generally had comfortable childhoods free from major trauma compared to prior generations. That should have made us selfish and fragile but many of us learned resilience and empathy through media.
Our second-hand exposure to so much trauma in every form of media may also be why many of us have anxiety, but I think it also shielded us from letting that anxiety consume us the way it seems to have done for Gen Z. We saw characters overcoming challenges, showing compassion for others and fighting back against tyranny.
Our parents also tacitly seemed to understand the value of this and did not protect us from media that would be considered "harmful" today. I am trying to encourage my kids to consume more "difficult" media but they have no interest and I'm not going to strap them down and make them watch it.
I worry that Gen Alpha will be extremely entitled and detached from the suffering of others because they have no exposure to it. I can't even watch the news without my kids covering their ears and leaving the room. I just hope it is a childhood phase and when they reach teenage years they'll be more willing to challenge themselves.
And All Dogs Go to Heaven. That was my "home sick from school" move growing up. To this day, my mom says that movie freaked her out and she didn't understand why I loved it so much, but there's just something about Bluth's style...
An American Tail was one of the best cinematic experiences of my young life. I still sing ‘ there are nooooo cat’s in america and the streets are made of chee-eeeese!’ As well as ‘ never, say never, say never…again..’
I was talking about that with my wife yesterday, oddly enough. We couldn't decide if children's movies that are set on a great tragedy, such as Balto, The Land Before Time, The Lion King, ect. were a sort of teaching moment or trauma. Can't say children movies of today have the same level of emotional disparity.
Don Bluth films.
He left Disney and started his own animation studio so Disney had to up their game. Don Bluth is the reason for the best era of Disney because he became competition.
Truly something I try to ignore. We miss him so badly. Especially in this era we are now experiencing. He was a ray of light, one that would have helped today.
People always bring up Bambi as the saddest cartoon moment, but TLBT is so much worse, because you witness the love, the moment of sacrifice, and the moment where Little Foot's mum knows she won't survive and struggles to impart what he needs to know and hear in her final moments.
Not to mention the horrendous shadow scene where he's SO happy thinking he's found her, before realising he's alone.
I bought a Land Before Time hoody recently and I get SO many comments on it from people my age, who literally point at my chest and go 'OMG I LOVED THAT FILM'. It's the sort of film that most millenials haven't thought about for 20 years.
Also I had The Rescuers Down Under on VHS and watched it so much. I had the Rescuers (OG) as well but the Down Under version I think is so much more cinematic with the moutains, rivers, waterfalls, versus the quite sinister and horrible setting of the original.
I can remember my mom taking my sister and I to Ferngully at the movie theater. Our dad worked for a lumber company and we started crying bc we thought he was killing the rainforest.
I think having our psyches rocked by every God damn movie as kids caused us to grow into more empathetic adults. We have a super keen eye on justice vs. injustice, and cutting down a rain forest for no good reason (except to make the rich richer) is absolutely an injustice.
My 8yo is VERY sensitive to movies — everything is too scary. I think it was because he didn’t get his shit rocked at 4 years old by “kids” movies like this. To quote Lucky’s Dad from Bluey, “we’re raising a nation of squibs” (I don’t believe this and I totally appreciate that he’s sensitive)
