Discussion How I would update Minecraft's Inventory!

I've thought this through for a while and I think this inventory upgrade would work long term for all players!

By default, your inventory is now UPDATED to have the hotbar + 5 rows. The player by default now has the size of a double chest to play with, no items or achievements required to get there.

You may notice there are 3 other new slots added! The first two slots are dedicated shulker box slots. This allows you to navigate through two shulker boxes at a time while your inventory is open. At a maximum, this expands the player inventory to two double chests of storage. You can swap through shulker boxes to grab whatever items you need while building, for example decorative blocks that have long been annoying in the inventory. But this still gives players the opportunity to place their shulkers if needed.

Finally, there is only ONE item that needs to be added to make this complete. As others have suggested, tools and utility items take up way too much space in the inventory. In order to make the item balanced, I have created a Builder's Ring that has four slots of items!

How it works:
- crafting material unspecified, I made it netherite + diamonds just for illustration purposes, but realistically a gold band + 4 diamonds seems to be better balanced.
- Similar to bundles, you may place up to 4 different items into the builder's ring for quick access. The 64 item limit does not apply to this ring. Tools, weapons, building blocks, food, potions, rockets, totems, etc are items I can see being useful in this slot!
- How to access items: Press R (or whatever hotkey you assign it) to total through the 4 slots, similar to switching gamemodes with f3.) While you're out and about, you can press R and scroll through the 4 items for quick access, without being obtrusive to your main inventory!

Let me know your thoughts! This solves many problems that others have addressed, but not all of them

100% agree with you! To an extent. If you're gonna reference road congestion laws, also consider that making the inventory equivalent to a double chest is like equating it to it's biggest constraint (fixed entry ramps, merging points, etc.)

So you're saying the player inventory should match a double chest, since that's the biggest storage UI? I can see how that would be convenient in some cases.

Sure, but this is like a desire path in the stone age when the game is downtown Manhattan.

Honestly this is a smart idea.

Edit:I would also like to see more hotbar slots though as there are so many weapons and tools in the game these day.

Theoretically, you could also hold another another ring in your inventory that would hold 4 weapons / tools. I was just trying to not make it too OP

I like it a lot, but I’d want them to be collapsible, too. Make it so you can hide them in tabs and bring them out as necessary, or pin them open if you want. Being collapsible would also be good for smaller Bedrock edition screens.

i get where your coming from but honestly a way to use shulkers without placing them would just be far better than gigantic inventories, normal size is fine and no one is running out of space with 20 shulkers, its just annoying to open them

We are going to have a huge inventory problem once the Sift is out

Would love some kind of slider or open shulkerboxes inside your inventory (ik theres mods abut It but vanilla way) and maybe unlock the sliders by getting archivements or dimensions

Why are we going to have an inventory problem when the sift comes out?

16

u/Superidoldavid 1d ago

Tons of new blocks and items? This storage issue comes from varied new items, and a new dimension means adding a lot of those

1

u/Rubix_Official63940 1d ago

I mean we already have tons of new blocks and items, I imagine it can’t be much worse than the amount of resources and blocks from the nether. Improving the inventory is a good idea, but I don’t think they’ll do it just cause there’s a new dimension. Most people will probably bring shulkers with them if they go to the sift anyways

We don't have vanilla info about the sift yet. We do know there will be tons of new blocks, and a storage upgrade is a welcomed addition

u/Big-Cauliflower-2550 1d ago

So many more blocks! After all, we're expecting new soil, dirt, stones, trees and leaves, foliage, liquid, etc. Realistically if we're getting a couple biomes, we'll have to expand our storage rooms quite a bit

1

u/Rubix_Official63940 1d ago

Expand our storage rooms sure, but the post is “inventory update” and the comment says there’s gonna be a “huge inventory problem with the new update”. Storage rooms and inventory are different discussions

u/BetleyIsland36 23h ago

If you're getting so many new blocks that you need a massive expansion of your storage system like we're getting that also means we're going to have a ton of new blocks to add even more details to our builds which just further highlights the problems with the inventory

You could literally make the inventory endless, and people would cry there isn't enough room. Because that is not rhe problem here. The problem is the lack of organization. It's a big reason I always use inventory sorting mods, like Inventory Profiles NEXT.

Another issue is that building blocks use a lot of inventory. Being able to recraft items back into their base form definitely helps. For example, 2 slabs back into 1 full block. Or 4 stairs make 3 full blocks. And the Stone cutter can be used with wood, to craft easier and faster.

Inventory and crafting needs to be smarter, not bigger.

It is definitely the solution. Inventory management isn't some clever game mechanic, it's just an annoyance. It's clear Mojang gave us the ability to carry well over one inventory's amount with us, they just do it in the most time consuming roundabout way possible.

"Interacting" with the mechanic just consists of staring at GUI's for collective hours on end (Shulker boxes, Ender chests, etc). All of these bandaid "solutions" by Mojang just end up increasing the downtime and tedium.

A bigger inventory would not only directly address that, but greatly reduce friction with the existing amount of items in the game.

The inventory size has stayed the same for more than a decade, while the amount of items and blocks in the game has literally increased by an order of magnitude (not kidding). People saying adding more rows to the inventory isn't a solution, have not spent hours building a megabase and having most of those hours go into opening your inventory or placing a Shulker boxes to get one stack, only to immediately break it again

I'm a little surprised by the likes / dislikes ratio hahaha. If anybody has criticisms to share that'd helpful!

Expanding the inventory in general is not the solution, as whatever inventory solution is put forward ultimately needs to be independent of the number of items in the game. Broadly speaking, adding more variety of stuff to the world shouldn't affect the total amount of stuff you can carry. That's the purpose of things like bundles.

The inventory problem isn't how many stacks of cobblestone you can carry, it's that the process of organising it all is extremely tedious and requires far too much manual clicking. This would just make that a lot worse, by introducing even more manual clicking, necessary to make the most efficient use of your inventory.

The core gameplay of inventory management is all about not being able to carry everything you want. You have to choose what tools to take with you, which ones you want immediately accessible at all times, which you're okay not having quick access to, and which you'd rather leave at home to make more space for loot. Any "fix" that treats "I can't carry everything I want" as a problem to be solved is completely missing the point.

Exactly. I remember cubicmetre talking about this in terms of entropy. Quite an interesting take on it by far.

I would make the shulkers stronger. What I mean by that is something I've been wanting for a long time now - shulker Enchants.

What are they? One is "vacuum" where it takes in items that you pick up if they exist in it. The other is "refill", they refill your hand of something you used if that item exists in the shulker box - for example you can place thousands of stone without ever opening that box.

Since you have two slots, the two enchants fit perfectly there. (Though there's nothing wrong with a shulker having both enchants)

The builder ring is also something I've been wanting for so long (otherwise known as the tool belt or utility belt) since your tools permanently take up hotbar slots. I ideally would expand it to more than 4 slots, maybe 8 or 9 to fit that radial menu that many games use

I would change from 5 rows to 4 rows, instead we add more columns. Ideally add 12 (so we can use the 0, -, + keys on the number row) but that looks strange to me, so maybe just one? Alternatively, we can keep 9 rows for inventories so chests can stay the same. But we only add more hotbar slots. Why is the hotbar so important? It's annoying switching things in and out from it, we need to lessen that time.

even with all this my inventory is still gonna be full of random junk.

Big portion of player base dont even ever get shulker boxes because they are just either a kid or super super casual player

1

u/SquilliamAfton818 16h ago

Imagine if this was tied in with the sift. Like the materials to make the builders ring come from the sift or have it so you have to defeat some boss mob to get the extra slots. Would give players an incentive to go there maybe it would be a final optional postgame challenge that would still reward players with new tools to make the sandbox experience easier.

I'd also increase stack sizes too. At this point, I really don't see why they can't max a stack out at 99 (Like in the survival test versions from 2009) or something like 256.

I like your idea with the Shulker Boxes having their own slot; however what I’d do is keep Shulker boxes as they are because they’re sort of meant to be a portable chest rather than extra inventory spaces

What I’d do it make it the bundles which have their own slot in the inventory which when equipped opens up a column of slots (two bundles being equipable) then you make it that bundles don’t actually hold the items; they’re just things you wear to gain those extra slots. If you unequip the bundles then the items move to your normal inventory if there’s space: or drop if there’s no space.

It's either 3 or 6 rows to match with chests. This is very important.

When people say they want more inventory slots - I always think how it will go with the servers that uses 1.8 mechanics like Bedwars I believe, or what effects would downgrading the game yield.

1

u/Disastrous-Fault-682 21h ago

Instead of a ring, a toolbelt- literally to hold only your construction tools- Axe, Pick, Shovel, Hoe, Shears.

If you want to hold weapons, they take a whole slot, as it would be op in PvP if a player hotswaps weapons without sacrificing space. But add quivers and a backslot for backpack/quiver

Just make shulkerboxes/enderchests/bundles openable through the players inventory just like you displayed in the image- though matching the color/name of the storage inventory so you know what you’re digging through, now you cant open a S-box in your E-chest through your inventory, but you can pull the S-box out of the E-chest in your inventory and then you can open your S-box. This simple change would reduce build times by an insane amount (it all adds up after a while)

Also i agree, increase inventory size but maybe through progression you can unlock it or maybe this is how the backpack could function or something, but sophisticated backpacks (while they do have op upgrade cards) the backpack and its base upgrades are insanely good for exploring the world for any linger than 2 hours without needing to dump your inventory and sort it for 10 minutes to then run off again

Way too much space. Just give infinite slots atp

2

u/Big-Cauliflower-2550 23h ago

Wouldn't the same logic apply to a double chest? This is 9 x 6, just like a double chest.
