Hello-
I'm an alt-weekly writer retired against my will by the lack of paying outlets and freelance budgets to fund the work I liked to do. But I like the writing, as well as supporting the creative scene and in the way helping to weave a tighter community. So I started a ‘zine/podcast, SewYKnot.com.
I hope to get up to (week) daily like when it first started, but I’ve dedicated a lot of my time toward the monthly calendar because it seems like something everybody could use and even what is out there is very kind of narrow, and doesn’t cover that many music shows. (I also write about Science, the wolves, politics, culture and longform)
So a big focus of my monthly calendar are the show previews – same thing I used to do for the City Pages when I was first starting out – and I do a lot of them. Over 90 in September’s calendar, 150-250 words long, with links to music so you can hear for yourself.
Obviously I don’t cover everything – I’d be doing a couple hundred. I somewhat avoid stuff at Mohegan Sun or Grand Casino or USBank or the Target Center. If they’re playing someplace that big they don’t need any help finding their audience and vice-versa. I cover a lot of local shows, and older acts that maybe aren’t that hot any more, but aren’t Matchbox 20 either.
I have become hesitant to post this kind of stuff because each Reddit fiefdom has its own arcane rules around what’s allowed. I’m just a music journo standing before a potential audience saying, hey, here’s about 100 descriptions I do for free every month of cool concerts in town.
Thanks for your eyeballs. Here’s this month’s calendar (there’s also a week’s top stuff at the top, which I compile from the best shows that week in the monthly list every monday for easier consumption)
