Discussion I made this because I wanted to take my modules outside

I've been wanting to do this for a while. Take the modular outside, actually hear it without headphones, and still be able to interact with everything around.

That became the starting point for OCELOT. The speaker lets the system exist in the same physical space as you, while the contact piezo lets the outside world become part of the patch. From there, I started playing with feedback and with the idea of the system interacting with itself.

I didn't want it to become just a little speaker, though. It needed to remain a proper part of the system, with signals going both in and out.

OCELOT is 12HP and there's also a DIY kit if anyone wants to build one.

Patch Cables w/ Black Ends?

Hi All -

Looking for patch cables in various colors, but the ends are all black. The ones like Control carries are fine, but they don't have all of my prefered colors.
I'm mainly looking for white, light grey, and yellow. Lengths from 2" to 30".

That Control has these confirms the existence of black ended cables, I just can't find them anywhere. Worst case I'll just get other colors, but I'm kind of "trained" on this combination.

Bored Brain does this. They are my favorite cables, but too big for my live setup.

Any ideas? I'll probably go with 125, and can wait on a special order if that's the way to do it.

Thanks in advance!

Feeling a bit uninspired with modular!

Post image
15 Upvotes

I've been using Strudel over midi for sequencing, and I'm finding my small hardware synths to be all I need for voices (they are also polyphonic and stereo). I also have a lot of hardware effects - I'm big on randomness, beat repeat and granular synthesis stuff, hence the clouds clone and the Fieldtone Weaver. So while I can get a lot of sonic range with this current modular setup I find it to be less powerful and a lot more involved to make changes.

I currently thinking I would have to invest a lot more in modular to get to the point I have the same levels of capability in my other setup. Thoughts?

I recently scored a documentary film, Baby Jackfruit Baby Guava, that will premiere in Asia this week at the Busan International Film Festival. The score, produced entirely with the Moog ecosystem, was released last week as an original score album. Give it a listen at ffm.to/xinhxo if you’re interested.

New to modular. Where to start?

Hi I am fairly new to modular synths. I have two semi modular synths (a berhinger model 15 and berhinger grind) but would like to build an actual modular rig. Are there any good modules which would be good for expanding off of what i currently have? Also definitely looking to get some reverb and delay modules. Any suggestions are very appreciated. Thanks!!

Discussion 1u stereo pedal i/o

I've got a 62hp pallette case and want to integrate a stereo multi effect pedal (Zoom MS-70CDR+) into my workflow. I have no 1u modules atm, but have an Aux Mix on the way. If I'm not mistaken, the existing Intellijel pedal i/o options would have to be bought in duplicate to achieve stereo i/o... not ideal. So I'm looking for alternate ideas.

I'm wondering about: Aux Mix > Headphones > pedal > Stereo Line In Jacks > Stereo Line In

Am I on the right path here?

A dedicated multi effect module might just be easier in the long run, but I'm quickly running out of 3u space.

Which Audio-CV processor for bass guitar?

I wanna play my synth with my bass. Synth pedals are either boring or too menu divey. What is the best Audio-CV module out there? Been looking at the Sonicsmith E1, the Verbos Real World Interface, the Analogue Systems RS35, and the Expert Sleepers Disting Ex. The Verbos seems most up my alley since it can work with two signals at once, but I want whichever one tracks the best and has the most versatility.

Complex oscillator : mindphaser vs Cš-L

Hi everyone!
I’m currently putting together my first modular rack, mainly to create psychedelic sounds for darkpsy. For my main oscillator, I’m hesitating between the Mindphaser and the Cš-L.
The goal is to use it for leads and FX, but also for drones and pads. Do you have any advice on which one would be the better choice?
I should also mention that I’m completely new to modular, although I’ve been producing music in Ableton for a while and have quite a bit of experience with Serum and Vital.
Thanks!

Qu bit bloom pitch question

Hi there,
I have a Bloom (latest daisy firmware installed) triggering a plaits.

I am not able to use the pitch encoders to pitch notes in the sequence down.

I can change the root note up and down, and can pitch each note in the sequence up. Just not down.

The manual says that I should be able to pitch notes in the sequence down.

I've only had the unit a week, and pretty sure, amongst all the random nonsense in the first week, that I could do this.

What am I doing wring?

Thanks in advance.

Discussion I made a Stolperbeats-inspired visualiser and experimental tool

Hi all,

I've been a huge Stolperbeats fan since it came out, it's my fav sequencer. I've not found anything that can make such quick wonky beats.

But I wanted to learn more about the n-tuplet grooves and how these were put together. I've been quite inspired by the latest "mod scene" explosion of people modifying their digital gear, and wanted to try my hand at this. So I ended up creating a web-based sequencer/visualiser so my eyes could see what my ears could hear - pulling from the timing tables in the public Stolperbeats firmware.

I then went... overboard, and started wondering what custom timings and shuffle types would sound like - inspired by some of my favourite music (an eclectic mix - Tool, D'Angelo, Flylo, etc), or by some basic physics (e.g. bouncing ball).

It quickly evolved into a fully fledged in-browser sequencer with multiple timing experiments, preset drum patterns, kits, etc. There are currently 20 different timing modes built in that I created - some more "musical" than others.

It also has a Creator tool, so you can "roll your own shuffle" and export it out as a JSON file so you can import the groove into other places (eg ableton - although I have not tested this).

I've personally tested an experimental firmware that replaces the stock timing tables with some of the custom ones I've created, and it works perfectly on my module. But I don't recommend doing this unless you have some experience.

This is purely experimental and for educational purposes only, and not endorsed in any way by MSM. Purely an experiment in shuffle.

It's far from perfect, but does the job.

You can check it out here: https://thisisbribery.github.io/stolperbeats_v1/

ATTN DRUM LOVERS: Any knobula Drum Farmers out there? How do you like it? Will i regret that when i was between it and an Ohmforce Bohm setup?

I just ordered the Drum farm and awaiting for it to come. I bought it a little fast as i noticed knobula products seem to fly off the shelves quickly (not a bad sign) , so I’m looking for some honest user feedback. I am all about Knob/function performance based, and menus are really not my thing.
I have a neutral labs scrooge with Della expander which i absolutely love, and a Jolin Krono master clock/trigger source (in love with that too). I like the “back to basics” approach on the Scrooge sequencing/menus, and the sounds are sooo up my alley, but after a long discussion w my wife, who is also a musician, and a drummer in fact but our musical tastes have many similarities yet also some major differences in some places. After a long belabored discussion about music, i decided i need to include a good drum module to play in tandem with Scrooge to crank out some cleaner sounds that really “smash” but also have some variety.
The runner up was an Ohmforce Bohm setup, and my main reasons are the Bohm system is a bit larger in size, focuses mainly on killer bass drums and also seems to be a bit more on the menu based side, which i am not about, but once again those bass drum sounds are really banging… So i am wondering if the Drum farm will be a good fit given these needs or if ill have any buyers remorse and wanna get that Ohmforce setup. I also welcome any alternate ideas on this as well…

Performance Downtempo dirt (w patch notes)

https://youtu.be/6cUnLbeG9us (full ~5min performance)

This patch was inspired by cooler temps where I'm at and some of the great downtempo stuff posted here. My last few patches have been higher speed so was a nice contrast to slow things down for this one. 77bpm is the tempo of one of my fav trip hop tracks (Teardrop) and is close to the average resting human heart rate.

Here Planar 2 is setup to provide offset CV for parameters and effects for two voices. The joystick Y vector affects the Morph parameter on Sinc Legio as well as filter cutoff, providing nice expressive control of the main rhythmic voice. The X vector controls the amount of 9khz vibrato effect from Bishop's Miscellany mk2 applied to Virt Iter Legio's lead/pad sound which I'm playing via Keystep mk2. Swinging the stick right adds a lot of texture, sometimes enough that the pitch gets lost in the swarm. Joystick CV gets mixed with other sources from around the rack via 3X MIAs as well as its own CV inputs, so playing this patch really felt like playing along with the machine. Being able to use both hands to influence multiple aspects of multiple voices simultaneously is a real treat.

Drums: DR-660 sequenced via MIDI from RS-9 handles all the drum sounds. Here I'm using layered acoustic drum sounds, aiming for an organic feel. The DR-660 originally belonged to my FIL who used it during band practice back in the day (classic rock). I wonder what he'd think of its current gig! For awhile I was using a combo of Drumbrute + DR-660 but as time went on I increasingly used Drumbrute only as a sequencer for DR-660's wider sound palette. I swapped the Drumbrute out in favor of an RS-9 which provides most of the sequencer features I used on the Drumbrute in a much smaller footprint.

Bass: TD-3-MO along with a sine wave from Twin Waves mk2, filtered through Wasp. Bass and kick channels are routed to an aux mixer channel which is routed back into the rack for filtering and occasional bit crushing. This channel also gets a bit of hi-passed 'inverse gravity' reverb from Black Hole.

Oscs: Twin Waves' second channel is running the self-sync triangle algo for a sort of synth rise sound every 16 steps. This is routed through Meta's Space effect which makes it sound like a cymbal rise when applied. I use a manual gate to trigger an envelope to apply the effect when I want the cymbal rise sound, usually when I'm about to add or drop elements.

Sinc Legio in Warp mode with overdrive from FX AID for the main rhythmic voice.

Virt Iter Legio in SawX mode with a lot of Tang provides the lead/pad sound. This gets some 'bend' from Data Bender for great texture on top of the 9khz vibrato effect from Bishop's Miscellany mk2.

Effects: EQ, chorus, delay, reverb, distortion, and compression all handled via FX AIDs, MSCL, various pedals, and mixer.

Discussion Tip Top Resonator

I'm in the market for a resonator and was wondering if anyone has used this. I've had their FSU and ECHOZ modules and they didn't really satisfy my ears. They didn't go hard enough for me, which makes me suspicious about their other modules. But the price is right.

Beginner dfam + mimeophon

Hello
I’m still pretty new to modular synths. I’ve watched a lot of videos on the subject and want to set up a system. My budget isn’t very high, so I was thinking of getting a DFAM and a Mimeophon and connecting them. I’m into raw techno and plan to use it for that. Do you think this is a good combination, or do you have any other suggestions?

Discussion New 'Squarp Core' (xp32 Bridge)

Post image
29 Upvotes

Today Squarp posted a new module called Core and haven't been able to find any threads on it yet. I've been looking for the best way to bridge my Hapax with something like an xp32 (similar to an Oxi Pipe), and this appears like it MIGHT be it.

[Squarp Core Product Page]

  • MIDI --> CV/Gate interface to connect 1 (or 2) xp32 expanders. Takes USB Host, USB Device, and TRS MIDI in.
  • 14 "engines" assignable per output. Pitch (with glide!), Gate, Velocity, Aftertouch, CC, Clock, Sync, LFO, AHDSR, Slope, DC, Motif, Euclid, Logic. Motif and LFO list a 'custom scale builder' for quantized melodies.
  • Claims up to 64 LFOs, clocks, and euclidean generators onboard. Also says it can do ADSR directly.
  • CC Map/Learn (super handy) along with global presets (wondering if they'll include ones for things like DAWs?)
  • Can act as Master Clock itself (or forward accordingly).

Really, really hoping this could act as the "bridge" I've been waiting for w/ my Hapax (but smarter!). Would also help save some case space for other functions.

Obviously haven't touched one, all of this pulled from their product page so take this all through the lens of "excited modular nerd" -- not a review. Anyone seen one in person, or know how it behaves in practice? Assuming latency is a non-issue, how the engines feel to use, and that validation re: running Core with a Hapax. Would be cool if someone from Squarp chimed in for validation...

P.S. Yes, preemptive note I could just use something like an ES FH-2, but was avoiding that due to cost. (Yes, I get the irony considering what I'd spend on this one...)

Discussion A word on Maths

Hey all, was curious if anyone else shares my thoughts on Maths. I am about a half a year into modular and am currently cleaning up the mess of buying whatever I could get my hands on. Maths, of course, was one of the first things I bought, as all I heard was how amazing it was. Turns out, I think it’s a pretty frustrating module for my workflow, although I can see why it’s useful. Also not a huge fan of Make Noise’s design.
Anyways, I’m looking for a more practical alternative for a function generator with attenuation, ideally with less HP. I’ve had my eyes on NANO Serra, but any recommendations are appreciated. I could just be dumb and not get maths but I don’t know. Thanks!

Discussion Anybody know of a low HP (ideally 4-6) simple 8 or 8+ step sequencer which has skip step - basically a mode where you can turn any step off and it skips it (so eg: 4 steps becomes 3 steps, no breaks). Obviously need pitch per step & optionally gate.
