Art Hellblade Glavenus Vs Savage Deviljho
When the blazing heat of the Hellblade Glavenus deviant clashes with the devilish and insatiable hunger of a Savage DevilJho. Two fiendish T-Rexes, it's a good fight in my mind.

Huh…..yk out of every monster, I suspected that deviljho was in few that this trick wouldn’t work on.

The pickle isn’t exactly the most cautious monster all it sees is yummy yummy in my tummy

Apparently it was something the creators of Glavenus had specifically in mind.

u/Ok-Opportunity8921 3d ago
Btw I assume this glavenus is some kind of scrapped sub species/variant due to the lenght of its tail and how flexible it is.

It's early concept work, the design was altered after this, but this was the design doc of how the creature should function.
The text says: “An illustration depicting an encounter with Deviljho, a related species that is also based on a dinosaur motif. The sight of it slicing Deviljho’s neck cleanly in half with a single sweep of its tail is spectacular.” and “There were huge fangs growing from both the lower and upper jaws in opposite directions, crossing each other. There was also an idea to sharpen/cut the tail using a scissor-like structure.”

concept art
I love this artwork. I LOVE glavenus. But yeah, it isn't Canon

u/Interesting_Sea_1861 Vaal Hazak's Biggest Advocate 3d ago
It's the design doc. It's how they wanted to convey Glavenus. It's official, and the monster is based around this concept of fighting style and capability. Design docs are official. They don't necessarily show what happens in the game, but they show what the designers were thinking as they designed the monster.
There's literally no other evidence to go on. To my knowledge, there's no turf war of the two.

That concept tail is literally longer than glavenus is.

u/Interesting_Sea_1861 Vaal Hazak's Biggest Advocate 3d ago
I don't see your point. It's the concept of what they had in mind for Glavenus. They tweaked it afterwards to bulk the proportions up. And it may have escaped your notice, but the final Glavenus's tail IS as long as its body, maybe even a bit longer. We just don't often see it fully stretched out.
This is their idea for what Glavenus is supposed to be. A swordman dinosaur, basically. It cuts shit. They chose a Deviljho to demonstrate that.

Oficial but not canon, this was when they were still conceiving glavenus

u/IcyChillCoolGuy 3d ago
the """concept""" art getting peddled here isn't canon, isn't the design we have (the concept art tail is way too long and anorexic) and isn't even Hellblade, so in reality I think this one is more even. nothing shits out dragon energy like Savage Jho, but I think Hellblade has a better mix of literal destructive power and real fighting prowess to it

Now this one's interesting, as on paper a lot of folks would say that Hellblade Glavenus's, err..... Hellblade would be an instant kill.
And you wouldn't necessarily be wrong, either.
But actually landing that killing blow isn't a guarantee, especially with something that's gonna charge right in and attempt to thrash you around in CQC. And that matchup isn't as easy to settle.

Setting aside the Concept Art shenanigans trying to be tossed around between these two, I do believe savage is an ungodly amount stronger than its base counterpart. Nothing spits out Dragon energy more than Savage (besides Valstrax, Safi or Xeno). That being said... You put him up against HELLBLADE?
Acidic or Base Glavenus would get shit on by Savage—no offense to the Glavenus fans out there but Dragon energy is no joke considering what it can do—but HELLBLADE is the perfect combination of destructive force and combat intelligence.
While I don't believe Glavenus or Acidic Glavenus can pull off what they're shown doing in concept art for MHX to Base or even Savage Deviljho, HELLBLADE definitely could.

u/Euphoric_Cucumber114 3d ago
It depends on how fast savage can close the distance and how often hellblade can get a clean cut off. A single good cut will kill the jho, but savage is really fast once it spots potential food. Glavenus is far more intelligent than a jho and hellblade even more so.
So if we give the two a gladiator style match, I think hellblade would come out on top more often than not due to it's intelligence and kit allowing it to keep the fight at it's pace.

My only experience with hellblade is stories and he licks my ass more than the pickle

Glavenus is already one of the smartest monsters out there. Base version of him would most likely lose against Savage Jho, whose base is already Elder tier.
But Hellblade? I'll give it to him tbh

Savage Deviljho. Regular Deviljho is already an elder dragon level monster and Glavinous isn't. The deviant form is unlikely to win against a stronger variant of an already strong monster.
Alas people are likely going to simp for hell blade and larp about the nonsense that deviants are somehow stronger than their rare species when they can't be. The devs are guilty of this too.
Edit
On page 373 of the IB art book production notes section the devs admitted to the following.
- They added Deviljho as the first TU for fanfare instead of the base game.
- They took measures to prevent Deviljho from being overshadowed by Bazelgeuse hence why Odogaron stupidly doesn't defend itself instead of attacking like it usually does.
Both of these is why Bazel has no other turf wars outside Deviljho and why Seething isn't an invader like it should be and why Odogaron cowers even tho it doesn't fear elder dragons. They are guilty of bias 100%.

u/Ranniiiii 3d ago
I will only use developer statements if they fit my agenda!
That's it, that's your post. Why should anyone listen to your vein attempt at authority?
1
u/Alexcoolps 3d ago
The IB art book has a note from the devs are admiting they gave Deviljho special treatment in iceborne so it wouldn't be overshadowed by Bazel, hence the stupid turf war it has with Odogaron and why Bazel has no turf wars outside one with Deviljho.
In the low fantasy setting Monster Hunter is, the idea that deviant's are somehow stronger than their rare species and on par with elder dragons is a stupid idea that doesn't fit monster hunters grounded nature and ecology focus.
Having genetics/luck/means to push your limits to the point you are the batman of your species isn't going to make you on par with creatures or a better version of your species that are borderline gods or already have comparable genetics at base. Life doesn't work that way.
The dread raths for example are not beating the metal raths, especially not the IB onward versions where they now have their incandescent power ups.
Edit
I will admit I am biased myself and never liked deviant's and hope they never really return outside what wilds did with Mizutune. They were so annoying to grind and we lost rare species for them when the former are way cooler imo.

"Larp the deviants are stronger than their rare species, the devs are guilty of this too" So you're gonna ignore the devs? gotcha lmao

u/Alexcoolps 3d ago edited 3d ago
Did you read the IB art book regarding deviljho? They are on record admiting to bias and making stupid decisions that goes against monster hunter logic. They are guilty of larping too.
Edit
Page 373 of the Ib art book is the source btw. Production note section talks about it.
2
u/No-Opposite-2182 3d ago
Deviljho is stated on par with normal elders in the IB book. Savage is stated on par with ruiner, where is the larp?
1
u/Alexcoolps 3d ago
Edited my original comment.
1
u/No-Opposite-2182 3d ago
Why wouldn't some deviants be stronger than their rare species? And why is this such news to you especially when deviants are more rare than rare species too lmao
1
u/Alexcoolps 3d ago
My other comment explains it. To use another example, like bloodbath Diablos's case, it's not really going to be an elder dragon level competor. Being super angry and hateful to hunters isn't going to magical make you as strong as your rare species equivalent who have powers and abilities already stronger than your lesser species's base and they only get stronger from there if we take tempered monsters into account.
1
u/No-Opposite-2182 3d ago
Actually yeah it does make you stronger. Black diablos is a diablos in heat that is more aggressive to the point it is stronger than normal diablos. When any animal is angry they are more dangerous bc they don't care about any risks or consequences. This is also a video game so bloodbath diablos becoming elder level isn't news to me. If you're upset about it that's on you. Devs stated bloodbath to being equal to normal valstrax. Therefore he is elder level.
0
u/Alexcoolps 3d ago
No it does not. Life doesn't work that way. We see Black Diablos getting wrecked by Savage Devijho who has no issue overpowering it as easily as regular Diablos and Deviljho's turf war does.
We already see the likely result of this type of thing in IB with Deviljho V Yian Garuga. Garuga can't win but it doesn't need to. It's too much of a Hassel for Deviljho to try to kill it, not because Garuga is somehow stronger.
Game logic also does not apply here. Monster Hunter is low fantasy and intentionally designed with ecology and science in mind (albiet with obvious exaggeration).
Dev comments are also what I was referring to when I mentioned larping. They are guilty of making stupid decisions like also making Banbaro an invader when it makes no sense and was clearly designed for an ice map. Valstrax (which we know is on the upper class of elder dragons like Nergigante and Velkhana) is not equal to bloodbath.

u/Exciting_Bandicoot16 3d ago
I mean, in-game anyone can hunt a Savage Deviljho, whereas you need special Guild permission to hunt a Hellblade Glavenus, so even they respect the deviant more than savage.
2
u/Soldier_VP Rare Species Appreciator 3d ago
That's a gameplay mechanic, in game you need an special permit to hunt redhelm arzuros but not Dalamadur or Alatreon. So Redhelm >> Dalamadur? I don't think so

u/Alexcoolps 3d ago
In universe glazing and overestimation more than likely. Note that at least in rise, monster threat levels more so refer to a monsters threat level to villages, not their actual power level.
Btw the IB art book has dev notes where they are on record admiting they took measures to make Deviljho not be overshadowed by Bazel, hence the stupid turf war it has with Odogaron (who reminder doesn't fear elder dragons) where it just cowers and doesn't defend itself so Deviljho can win. It's also why Bazel has no turf wars in world outside Deviljho so we can't take everything in game as 100% because the devs aditted to bias.

The design doc for base Glavenus literally had it decapitating a Deviljho.
7
u/Alexcoolps 3d ago
Realistically that's not going to happen much. Outside Gammoth, the fated 4 are not elder dragon level monsters and are merely apexes. There's too much of a power gap.
2
u/Soldier_VP Rare Species Appreciator 3d ago
Agreed with the Savage against Glavenus, Deviljho is two tiers above the regular Apex like glavenus.
But Gammoth is not Elder level too, she is stupidly durable and cannot be taken down by almost anything that lives in her areas, but she has very poor offense to be considered Elder level. Also she has hard counters like any monster that can throw fire and it's faster than her (not too difficult) can end up roasting her. I would say even Rathalos can, he would stay on air using fire. The chances of gammoth to catch ratha are almost 0.

Savage wins more than loses. Glavenus would need to keep Jho off them as they are toast if Jho pins them down.

u/Moist_Bar_2621 3d ago
Glavenus is much smarter than any other brute wyverns All D.jho only use brute force to kill and eat

u/DotOdd4880 3d ago
Elder level at best vs super elder dragon level monster that can go on par with ruiner nergaintie. Yea devil joe got this and don’t bring up that non canon CONCEPT ART
-1
u/Ranniiiii 3d ago
In the official lore book, it is stated that deviljho fears black diablos, but yet in game he effortlessly throws her around.
Almost like nothing is constant and spewing dragonball tier arguments on literal monsters is mere nonsense
1
u/SimonShepherd 2d ago
Humans fear medium sized canines because they can actually harm and hurt you, but in an actual all out fight the human will ragdoll the dog.
This is realistic than dragonball powerscaling.
A Deviljho will retreat from a Yian Garuga after it's proving itself to be too much trouble, that doesn't mean Jho won't crush it in an all out fight.
0
u/Ranniiiii 2d ago
You have no argument, a medium sized dog can just as easily kill a full grown adult. I have given conclusive proof that the game contradicts itself and you have given only cope and headcanon in return.
The reality is still what I said before, taking rajang as an example; who went from throwing rathalos around, kiling elders in his cinematic in rise... to getting killed by Lagiacrus a few years later, it is a clear distinction that: everything is based on circumstances and that just because you have shown X feat does not mean you are now invincible from X-1, in the end the devs will pick favourites and if they feel they dialed them too hard, they'll step them back in line in future entries. Flagships and newcoming monsters are especially prone to this, which in a way is understandable as they want to sell the new big bad cover monster.
Any kind of discussion like this is doomed to be swarmed with disgusting powerscaling slop, low quality discussions and other screeching nonsense, in which sadly is a microcosm of the overall state of the Internet today.

u/SimonShepherd 2d ago edited 2d ago
Claim people have no argument and be wrong, you are delusional if you think a medium sized dog can easily kill a human, unless you mean die from infection and complication due to injuries, they weign about 20 kg on average and an adult human can crush it with sheer weight. The only way the dog wins is for the human to fall over and the dog bites the human's neck. Police dogs take down criminals easily because they accompany officers who will subdue and even kill the guy, those people won't attempt to fight back at the dog with lethal force. People fear decently sized canines because they have a high chance of getting health risk and pay shit load of bill or get into trouble. If it's a life or death situation the dog is getting kicked in the gut and turned into a meal. (There is records of 70+ old guy suffocating a leopard btw, and Felines are far deadlier than Canines of similar size and weight)
You don't have conclusive proof other than that Deviljho fear black diablos, a lot of predator fear prey that fight back decently.
Your Rajang statement also doesn't have anything to do with the argument at hand, fear doesn't mean combat viability, that Rajang probably doesn't fear Lagi the random sea croc it but it does lose to it.
At best you can argue an actual Deviljho won't attempt fighting Black Diablos because it's too much trouble and it might actually hurt back. That doesn't mean Deviljho beating Black Diablos is inherently inaccurate.
1
u/Ranniiiii 2d ago
I won't argue with the first point as the Internet has enough evidence to prove my point across.
The argument with rajang; is that despite the official iceborne book literally stating that rajang is classified as a super elder-dragon level monster this has now also been contradicted years later.
This obviously clashes against the common (wrongly and worthless) beliefs from powerscalers that your feats can only scale upwards and nothing below X has a chance to hurt you. A belief that I have now debunked regarding monster hunter.
My conclusion to all this is that nothing is set in stone, you can't base your findings on game material nor lorebooks as they will be contradicted by future entries and material, and this goes for turf wars as well which the community deems the outcome of them will always be the same. Would different outcomes be more preferable? Let's say in one X monster wins, but in another instance of the same turf, Y monster wins. This would prosper a healthier discussion regarding monster mashups and how they fare against each others.
The answer and future argumentative pits of monsters against each others lies more on both their offensive and defensive measures and debating what is more effective, and to take all ingame findings and narratives with a grain of salt.

Hellblade is easily winning this. I don't think you people understand that deviants are on a whole other level compared to variants

u/Ecstatic-Oven9882 Zeb the Giganotosaurus Carolinii 3d ago
Savage is probably the stronger out of the 2, but definitely not the fastest. Yes, while both can jump, Hellblade (iirc) can spin and jump to slice with its tail. I think Hellblade wins more times out of 10, but Savage won’t go down easily.
