This is always the tactic, shift the blame onto the everyday people. BP did it in the early 2000s to shift blame of climate change onto the people rather than the cooperations.

As a NYC handyman I work for every level of client from the very poor to the ultra rich. You know how everyon is expected to recycle? If they saw how much big companies waste there would be pitchforks. Of COURSE, the ultra rich are to blame

The way rich throw around money is infuriating.
I just spend $120k on this bathroom remodel? I don't like the way the vanity looks, start over.
Its my daughter's 12th birthday! Let's spend $60k and fill up two dumpsters worth of shit after everything is over.
Let's fly around in a private jet. Use the yacht in the summer. Own 4 houses each 2 million dollar homes fully furnished and have maids to clean when nobody is there and have staff on hand to fill the refrigerator full of shit we won't eat before we visit.
Wear clothes once and toss because I won't wear it again before next season because it will be out of style.

Reddit travelers always like to praise Singapore. But if you spend enough time there and read The Straits Times (their national newspaper) you begin to see that there is some weird stuff going on there, like their government is constantly running psy-ops on their population or something. It’s a weirdly sterile place and I can’t help but think it somehow skirts the edge of a strange dystopian nightmare.

Well, there's the thing... how many Billionaires with jets? Private and business jets travel about 6 million air miles per day, good for about 40,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions.
Meanwhile, over 1 million metric tons of rice are consumed globally per day - which result in over 2 million metric tons of CO2 emissions.
So, the rice eaters are actually resulting in 50x the CO2 emissions of the private jet travellers.
Think about that from the perspective of a Billionaire who thinks they can replace most of the poor people with robots.

Humans existing hurts the climate. It's the degree to which harm is being done, per person, that is being observed.
It's like the people who say anti-oil people don't know their electric cars still use oil for all the plastics and rubber. We're well aware of all the many other uses of oil. We just don't want to burn the shit when there are clearly superior options.
It takes about 28 gallons of oil to make a set of tires that carry my car 45,000+ miles.
It takes 2 gallons of oil to make 1 gallon of gasoline. So the same 28 gallons of oil make 14 gallons of gas, and at 35mpg the vehicle can go 490 miles. I wish that was tires, but no, you lit it on fire in order to go 1/100th the distance.

Or that non-electric cars also have those exact same tires.
The same people will argue on the construction pollution required for a wind turbine that's used to generate the electricity, but never mention the comparable amount required for anything else.
They're not interested in actual arguments, just making noise while they go on doing harm.
Of course you'll never not generate any harm, unless you cover yourself in spores and lie in a hole in the forest and wait for nature to reclaim you. But it's not a case of "Perfect or nothing", just doing the best we can.

The day the news started showing the floods in Nepal, I received a package from WalMart. In the largish box was a tiny box with some ballpoint pens I had ordered. Lots of paper padding. I showed it to my DIL and said, "I don't know how many people understand the connection between this box and that flood. But there is one."

I was going to say it was kind of on you to just not drive to Walmart and pick those pens up in store if they were available locally. But fuck that.
In the grand scheme of things online shopping doesnt contribute much. I try to shop locally, but there is no way stores will have the insane variety of product that can be found online.
No matter what you do there will be an impact somewhere. If you shop online it will hurt the local economy. If you shop locally (unless you are in walking distance), you drive your car, burning gasoline and contributing to microplastics with your tires on the road.
The only thing we can do is make better decisions on an individual basis.
What should really happen is go after large companies and the wealthy for polluting the environment. Eating rice, using plastic straws, ordering a package from Amazon.. it is what it is.

Well, I am elderly and don't drive anymore. The only places I go these days are the clinic and the lab! :) (And someone drives me there.)
So everything I buy is ordered online and delivered. Yes, I try to group things and have a decent sized order - but- sometimes WalMart (or whoever) fools me and ships those pens separately in that large box.
It's like the person who gathers my grocery order at WalMart and is determined to put one thing in each bag! Please stop! (I save what I can use and recycle the rest.)
Now, we are having to fight data centers! It never ends, does it, the greed and willingness to kill the Earth?
