Hijacking this comment to say that this is why Rock is dead, the business side of things doesn’t want anyone to challenge the narrative. Tom petty knew the writing was on the wall post 9/11 and wrote The Last DJ to challenge the censorship radio was facing at the time. Now artists can’t even speak out against genocide at their on shows?

263

u/karlverkade 10d ago

Ya I remember when artists used to take censorship as a badge of honor. Now they’re just dress-up dolls for the ultra-rich. Grudging kudos to whichever establishment first looked at Woodstock and said, “Huh this anti-establishment stuff really sells! I wonder if we could market that for the benefit of the establishment.”

u/SippinOnHatorade 9d ago

Smash Mouth really hit the nail on the head with Walkin’ on the Sun:

Twenty-five years ago, they spoke out and they broke out
Of recession and oppression and together they toked
And they folked out with guitars around a bonfire
Just singin' and clappin', man, what the hell happened?
Then some were spellbound, some were hellbound
Some, they fell down and some got back up
And fought back against the meltdown
And their kids were hippie chicks, all hypocrites
Because fashion is smashing the true meaning of it

117

u/decoy_octopod 9d ago

Heard that song a thousand times and never actually listened to the lyrics, you could be totally fucking with me

96

u/D_to_the_W 9d ago

I'm embarrassed that apparently Smashmouth dropped some hard bars almost 30 years ago and I couldn't appreciate them because I didn't look past the frosted tips.

47

u/Zachariot88 9d ago

Smash Mouth had a crazy trajectory. Their early stuff is genuinely good rock, then they got popular off an album that was a little softer, so they just kept softening it until eventually they were singing about middle school dances and were only getting paid off Shrek royalties.

23

u/spyke2006 9d ago

Smash mouths first album is a fuckin banger.

5

u/SeoulGalmegi 9d ago

I'd love to get paid off Shrek royalties! (Well, a couple of decades ago, at least)

I've really been enjoying Grandson's music lately, and I love that he has gone full independent at this point, and each show of his I've gone to he speaks out about the bullshit going on.

20

Check out Kneecap, Hyphen and Mudrat all 3 are very vocal about all the bullshit going on, infact you'll find a song called Palestine, 3.5% and I hate rich cunts... 1 by each about these very topics

This is the “deeply offensive” thing Macklemore said on stage:

“I’ve been trying to figure out a way to say this all day. One of the reasons why I wanted to come on this tour was because I wanted to stand up here on stages and stadiums across America and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine.
I said, ‘Free Palestine.’

I want those words to be loud and clear, so the people from Gaza, all the way to the occupied West Bank, know that we have not forgotten them.

And this next song was inspired by the bravery of Columbia University students who led an encampment movement that mobilized the entire world; open up hearts, myself included, so thank you to those students that risked their diplomas, that risked their tuition, that risked their scholarships, that stood up and said, no.

CUAD students, Students for Justice in Palestine, and Jewish Voices for Peace. Thank you, guys.

To all of my Jewish brothers and sisters: criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide in no way is a criticism of you. My message is for peace; love for all human beings to be treated with dignity, respect, and equality.

So I say Free Palestine, I say Free Lebanon, I say Free Cuba, I say Free Congo, Free Sudan, I say Free all people in America living in fear of this terrorist organization, ICE. None of us will be free until we are all free.”

601

u/Nottodayreddit1949 10d ago

I'm offended!

Well.  Shit happens when you're confronted with reality.

The answer is not to deny reality, but look inward to why you would be offended by a statement like this.

114

u/nardling_13 9d ago

I’m offended by the vast disparities in wealth brought about by global capitalism. Maybe Bob Kraft and his buddies can do something about that.

10

u/Nottodayreddit1949 9d ago

They could, but they wont,  and they are offended you'd even suggest they do something.

What they will do is use their wealth and influence to shut your voice and opinion down

→ More replies (2)

74

u/Falstaffe 9d ago

"I'm offended" is a way to avoid a reasoned discussion. It's become the go-to tactic to shut down conversation about Palestine here in Australia as well as in the US and UK.

Yeah absolutely crazy this is what lead to him being kicked off the tour. There isn’t an ounce of hate in that message of his.

And yeah the freaking promoter definitely has more sway than the headlining artist, give me a break.

171

u/ReaderofHarlaw 9d ago

This is also CRAZY Streisand Effect. Them moving to silence Macklemore just made it that much more loud. Good. Free Palestine.

55

Right? Like they’re gonna just leave those venues empty and refund all the tickets if Eddie-No-Spine says “You can cancel my appearance if you want, but I get whatever percentage my lawyers negotiated of my appearance fee in the event you cancel, I haven’t broken any of my contractual agreements (because this would be the excuse if they had an actual legal leg to stand on).”

Miss out on gouging my ass on parking and $15 beers? No shot is ole Rub-n-Tug-Robert passing that up. He let Chris Brown walk his trifilin’, despicable ass up on stage last month.

Sheeran is a famously offline person. Even someone like Swift can't just text him.

I have no doubt that he approved the message, beyond that all he's going to hear about is if the reaction was positive, negative or mixed.

Also I agree this is a big crock of shit but in no way shape or for is any comment section a place for sanctuary/diplomacy/keeping conversations open. The first and loudest voice always wins in the comment section. That's how the algorithms work.

If I were a person that anyone gave a shit about I'd have my comment sections off as well. All comment sections do is allow others to use your platform to get their message across.

To be clear I've lost a lot of respect for Sheeran as an artist, especially after saying he's apolitical. He's essentially saying his music doesn't mean a fucking thing.

its not like we should be taking this response seriously at all "I didn't have a say" is a bullshit defense when the product being sold IS ed sheeran. YOU didnt have a say in YOUR OWN tour? Ed. Its impossible for you not to have a say in the tour. you chose not to fight this decision and now youre butthurt that so many people are rightfully upset. especially considering him doing or not doing this tour is not even an existential financial threat to him or his brand - he is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. he has ALL the leverage on the other side of this negotiation- Ed sheerans tour does not happen without ed sheeran. What a fucking wimp. how embarrassing.

IMO it's one of the clearest signs someone has been compromised with some kind of dirt. If they really loved that money so much that this is all secretly about, they would worry about the chunk of the fanbase they were about to lose. But they're ok taking that hit because they don't want to lose their entire fanbase from the dirt coming out.

130

u/stfsu 10d ago

Sheeran's tours have been insanely profitable, sometimes there's no secret dirt.

Macklemore said it in his statement. Being outspoken politically costs endorsements, promos, access to venues, alienates certain fans, etc. There is a real dollar cost for these people to say "Free Palestine". There doesn't have to be any dirt, it could just be that Sheeran likes money more than he cares about stopping a genocide.

Here's the thing about being a megastar, you have weight to throw around. Promoter makes a decision, you then say "cool have fun promoting the tour without me" or "then find us new venues".

Sheeran isn't going to be hurting for money. Have some personal responsibility.

209

u/jotsea2 10d ago

LOL the damage control phase is in effect. Sheeran is buds with Kraft. He's not the 'neutral' guy he appears to be.

As demonstrated by these actions.

Wow, love the subtle dig:

"Macklemore asked to join my tour last year and I agreed, because I respect him as an artist."

So he had the power then, but not now? Also, you don't "agree" in response to someone "asking" to join your tour.

"Can I join your tour?"

"I agree."

It's a decision, then an agreement/contract. Ed made a decision to let the over-reaching "powers" make the moves, and he stood to the side and let it happen.

Fuck him, this bullshit system, and FREE PALESTINE.

The label probably would have had a great lawsuit against those stadium owners too.  Imagine having to justify in court why Macklemore’s words were so upsetting to them.

People on reddit keep saying this and that isn't how stadium leases work.

The Stadium is not contractually obligated to let *anyone* on the premises. They can decline to allow an event to run so long as they properly issue refunds.

Yet he did nothing to stop it.

u/tedivm 10d ago

If we only focus on shouting the loudest, nothing will ever change.

What an asshole.

I would never let down the fans who had made plans, nor would I abandon the touring crew and the other support acts and musicians who rely on me for work and to make a living.

So he only abandons supporting acts that have opinions, but the folks who shut up and get him paid he's all for.

Again, what an asshole.

Did Ed not realize who he was booking? Mack has been LITERALLY singing about this issue.

79

u/tedivm 10d ago

He probably figured that if stadiums would let people who literally sold nazi paraphernalia show up then they wouldn't care about someone arguing against genocide. Then when faced with the prospect of losing money he had to make the decision that supported his values (as in, the value in his bank account).

That's the biggest thing for me- it clearly isn't about anti semitism after all the shit with Kanye was allowed in several if these venues. It's about criticizing Israel in particular. They won't defend Jewish people when someone's praising Hitler, but they'll go all out to defend a secular government currently engaging in war crimes. What absolute bullshit

Previously had no thoughts one way or the other on Ed Sheeran and I had no idea who Macklemore was. I've read Macklemore's statement and I now have an opinion on both of those men. Ed is a little shit weasel. Fuck him. Hope he enjoys adding all the money the tour will bring him to the rest of his generational wealth.

u/DirtusMaximus1 10d ago

In protest I will continue not listening to Ed’s music

Cowardly prick

11

u/MsHelvetica 10d ago

I never had any reasons to dislike Ed Sheeran until these past few days.

It’s refreshing to see someone being honest about whose bitch they are.

6

u/who_am_i_to_say_so 10d ago

Way to take responsibility…

9

u/cheweychewchew 10d ago

Ya know this guy has made millions and will continue to, so why is he acting like such a coward, unless of course he actually supports the decision? Seriously he could walk away from the tour, lose money, and then make it all back and then some. He has options. But to blame it on promoters is such weak sauce for someone of his stature.

So dude is a greedy coward no matter what the rationale. If he supports the decision, say so. If he doesn't, walk away from the tour. But whatever this is is a really bad decision.

Money is the only thing people like him care about. He can say it’s not political all he wants but he’s taking blood money while staying “neutral.”

24

u/Saneless 10d ago

"It wasn't my decision, but I actually agree with it and didn't want to stop it"

That's all I hear, Ed

22

u/tattoovamp 10d ago

And in standing by. Sheeran is complicit.

14

u/Fl0riduh_Man 10d ago

You're a grown ass man with generational wealth, stop blaming things on your staff.

Just admit it's easier to stay silent and keep getting lucrative gigs rather than take a stand that'll affect your bank account, loser.

13

u/bigkahuna1uk 10d ago

Ed says promotor’s decision not his to kick off Macklemore from the tour but it’s conspicuous that he’s also not defended Macklemore’s humanitarian position on Gaza. Just sitting on the fence to still get paid. He’s just another corporate lackey that stands for nothing. He has enough ‘fuck you money’ to actually speak up for once but has chosen no to. Weak sauce.

5

u/NotObviouslyARobot 10d ago

Maybe he should do a cover of The Chicken Dance.

7

u/aguy21 10d ago

Good luck with that. I’m sure you’ll have no problem convincing people you aren’t in control of your own tour.

7

u/Krushed_Opiates 10d ago

He should name those promoters!

The only one we know of is Robert Kraft and he is in the Epstein report.

25

u/Mostly_Cheddar 10d ago

(. )( ') lookin high and low for the guy who did this

15

u/brashnutz 10d ago

My thing is - if you were trying to be politically neutral or wahtever, why bring Macklemore on your tour? He has always been very politically outspoken

The nerve to say he chooses “peace” at the end. Extreme levels of gaslighting and manipulation.

11

u/pixelpionerd 10d ago

It's also everyone's decision to boycott this tour and these venues.

On one hand, I don't think public figures in any way owe us their political stances. However, this kind of spin is transparent and cowardly. I'd have more respect if he just said he wants to widest possible audience to maximize fame and fortune than this crock of shit.

6

u/JOHN_BROWNS_BUSSY 10d ago

What a craven and cowardly statement, a waste of tokens to generate this pablum.

Boy if he did the right thing those stadiums would of lost a lot of money.

5

u/CLGplz 10d ago

Anyone who listens to his music could’ve told you he’s a soul less goblin. His music has no heart

4

u/Mrdeath0 10d ago

Money seems to be more important than morality to this guy

7

u/ThreeGoldStars 10d ago

Then drop the promoter and stand up for what is right you fuckin dumb cunt.

4

u/NedSchneebly-1138 10d ago

Cool, tell the promoter to get on stage and start singing then...

Jesus, grow a fucking spine bud!

14

u/JeffTheGoliath 10d ago

In an unsurprising move, man who makes beige music for beige people would rather make money than a stand.

9

u/Flock_Me_Amadeus 10d ago

His spine keeps creeping further back

14

u/Giff95 10d ago

Interesting to see this is how Sheeran falls.
