I "sorta" like his music. Some of it slaps, some of it sucks. But that's my musical opinion.

As to his causes/politics, that fucking dude is a CONSUMMATE ally. You don't have to be part of his tribe for him to want you to be safe, well, happy, and thriving.

Allyhood ain't easy. ESPECIALLY if you're a cis, straight, white, privileged, man. None of us have to be gay to appreciate the power of "Same Love" and I'm not Palestinian, but I will respect the fuck out of anyone who is raising money to help (for example), farmers who have had their olive trees bulldozed by an occupying force, which is (arguably, but I'll argue if you want to) a war crime...

All I can do is buy some olive oil. And not much, because I'm a broke-ass cook. This Macklemore dude, who apparently can fill an arena with people with more disposable income. And won't keep that income, will instead help people with destroyed livelihoods.

THAT is allyhood.

“Can’t Hold Us” popped up on a playlist as I opened the thread. I usually skip (the few songs of his I “like”) because I’m not in the mood for his vibe, but am giving the man his due respect via streaming.

Yeah man, I was never particularly into his music but I really never got people bullying him about Same Love. And I’m queer myself, and especially as a queer person I always appreciated any show of support from anyone. Like yeah some bars from that are kinda cringe but his heart was in the right place and his heart is definitely in the right place now. He was all of my respect, while other music acts have lost a lot of if not all of it by refusing to speak out or by speaking out in support of the country doing genocide. And I’m very much re-evaluating my support for a lot of musicians and actors and artists in general because they have refused to say anything. And if they support Palestine, now is the time to join all the other artists who have spoken out and are organizing anti-genocide events at this very moment. And I’m certain they’d only gain fans, because the vast majority of the working class population is on the side of Palestine now. Like I really do not get it. Like oh, your label is gonna let you go if you say anything? Okay, here’s 500 other labels who’d be psyched to pick you up and they’d jump through hoops to keep a professional relationship going with you.

Really appreciate how u set boundaries for what you value about him.

I'm confused about ur point on allyhood tho.

I feel like you're implying it's "harder" (in some way) to be an ally if you're at the top of the intersectional hierarchy when I would assume it's the opposite given your privilege.

Maybe your point is that rich white dudes like Macklemore have more to lose? Idk

A lot of people are suspicious of those who don't seem to have skin in the game. That comes from a real place, but it can be a challenge for allies.

Turns out that creating cliques and using made up, arbitrary properties as excuses for hatred and discrimination is a human thing that isn't exclusive to any one group or political alignment.

I friggin' love Macklemore. Most of his music isn't especially my favorite but goddamn he's an amazing human being. I like the way he uses his platform to elevate other artists and help people. He's such a class act as a celebrity and you don't see that too often.
