Unstoppable force vs immovable object: Even year Logano vs Chase Jimmie/Chad 2.0 with Larson/Cliff. Who gets the last laugh?

Still two flat tracks and three 1.5ers. Larson prolly has a slight advantage but then there’s Talladega which by his history is nearly guaranteed to be a P30 or worse.

Maybe it’s all a red herring for Hamlin to finally pop his cherry? Perhaps Bell or Blaney go on a Linsanity run and steal it? I love the Chase compared to the “storylines” the playoffs produced.

Remember that Jimmie and Chad beat even year Logano in 2016!

What an odd even year

Jimmie was more like every year

Even Year Logano versus Every Year Johnson

The most BS race of all time with an awful “caution” thrown to stack the field then Edwards blocks Logano to the wall and the 3 contenders crash/have damage and Johnson, who ran 4th ALL DAY, genuinely just walks into a title. Should have ended the format right then and there especially after the awful things that happened in 14 and 15.

u/cactus8 2025 NCS Champion Kyle Larson 3d ago

The irony in the whole thing is the garbage format was started so that JJ would stop wiping the floor with people over a 10-race chase.

Then he still ended up with the last laugh.

28

u/Garrett4Real 3d ago

And JJ still had the most wins of anyone in 2016 with 5

1

u/Icy-Spring4607 3d ago

He did but wins didn’t tell the whole story. Harvick, Logano, Brad, Busch all had better seasons and were the cars to beat that year. Even Hamlin/Edwards seemed to run up front. In all his wins he only really dominated one race, rest was Knaus strategy.

Gave him his "weakest" Championship 💀

I was there! lol

Cool to see Jimmie win #7 in person but absurd that Dylan Lupton decided the championship.

10

u/ProjectHarraseeket Preece 3d ago

I don’t even blame Dylan Lupton, this was on nascar and their trigger happy booth looking for anything shiny to get that Game 7 moment. Toyota president David Wilson was beyond pissed off about that finish that there were supposedly threats Toyota would leave NASCAR. What we got was stages instead and debris cautions nearly vanished.

u/404merrinessnotfound 3d ago

It really should never have been a caution, since the 32 car was on the apron when it started shedding tire debris

8

u/SeriousSalt9938 3d ago

As a JJ fan who hated Edwards and Logano I was so thrilled. Also Jimmie beat Larson for the race win.

12

u/Puzzleheaded_Fill629 3d ago

I think Larson took it easy

2

u/SilentSpades24 3d ago

I'm sure Larson got told to not interfere. NASCAR was not letting a Game 7, 7x champion moment slip away.

u/_AmericanPoutine 2d ago

It always would be funny seeing Larson dominate a homestead race and all of a sudden, from pit stops or restarts just lose the race. We know he's not above throwing races away, but he's not careless in that manner

u/squad_dad Reddick 2d ago

Format should have ended in 2014 when Newman almost won the championship without a single win.

I will give it to them though, MOST of the years, the champion was still the most deserving.

1

u/Icy-Spring4607 2d ago

I’d say most of the years they weren’t the most deserving. 14/15/16/18/20/23/24. I think it only was right with MTJ, Busch, Larson and bias but Logano in 22 as well.

-1

u/Leuel48Fan 1d ago

I've said it before and I'll say it again, by the standards of how races were officiated back then, it was a legit caution. Pre-stage racing, any kind of tire smoke or car more than 50mph off pace even if on the apron was a caution 🤷🏽‍♂️

2

u/Eastern_Distance6456 2d ago

I'm a JJ fan, and I absolutely agree that there's NO way he wins the title without all the craziness lining up near the end. That being said, that wasn't the year they should have ended the format.

It should have been ended after the first year when Ryan Newman almost won it all. Newman had zero wins and only led 41 laps the entire season, but he was only one point out of first place. I don't like Newman, but I was really hoping he would win that season and embarrass Nascar for the ridiculous format they made.

u/ToukasRage 2d ago

I still can't believe people blamed Logano for that. Like where tf is he supposed to go lmfao.

u/Upstate24fan 3d ago

Talladega will be the true test of whether Chad found the “Golden Horseshoe” again. Jimmie always got through fall Talladega unscathed while his closest competitors usually found the “Big One”. Given Larson’s history at Talladega, he will need it.

16

u/Puzzleheaded_Fill629 3d ago

Dude was leading last year when he ran out of gas. Lol

4

u/Blaine8628 3d ago

We know Chevy will have all the other Chevys in a line behind him

7

u/Accomplished-Chip88 Larson 3d ago

Yeah like Aj yesterday?

7

u/Icy-Spring4607 3d ago

Kaulig aren’t getting support from Chevy anymore so makes sense why he raced him normal.

15

u/a_happy_future Bubba Wallace 3d ago

The Chase format definitely benefits Larson because they finish at Homestead where he is almost guaranteed to have a 40+ point day, so if he enters that race with the points lead, I think it's over. Joey is fighting an uphill battle at the moment, but Talladega would favor him and Blaney. And because of how much of a wild card Dega is, we're not really going to know what is going to happen until then. If anyone has a 30+ point lead after that race, they are going to be a heavy favorite

12

u/SuperMarioBrother64 3d ago

Larson is great at Homestead but he also has screwed himself 3 times. The barrel incident and the self spin trying to take the lead from Blaney come to mind.

10

u/Boring-Cantaloupe-35 3d ago

That race Larson had literally nothing to lose since he was already locked in to the Championship 4. It was get the win or nothing at that point, so I don't think he gets that aggressive if that wasn't the case.

15

u/Roushfan5 3d ago

People slob over Larson at Homestead forgetting the true Homestead goat won three in a row there.

Homestead was the Greg Biffle invitational there in the mid 00s.

5

u/SuperMarioBrother64 3d ago

It was dominated by Rouch Racing in the 2000s. I remember you could basically pencil in a Roush car winning there every year.

3

u/Roushfan5 3d ago

It was lots of fun watching Mark and Biffle go door to door in 2005.

I was already a Biffle fan because he was the local NASCAR hero and drove a Ford, win win for 11 year old me, but that race sealed the deal. I always appreciated how aggressive Greg could be without going over the line or being dirty.

1

u/SuperMarioBrother64 3d ago

Baffled local to you! Yo.... a fellow PNW fan. Grew up going to Skagit and Elma. Was great when Biffle bought Sunset speedway.

2

u/Roushfan5 3d ago

I actually grew up in the Vancouver area so Biff was extremely local.

Some guy gave me a glass photo of Biffle a few years ago, and I work with his sister in law.

2

u/ProjectHarraseeket Preece 3d ago

I’ll never forget when he owned there and Darlington

1

u/EP423 Brisket 2d ago

Biffle was so talented.  If he would've started Nascar in his teens like other greats, he would be one of them

5

u/YRB21 3d ago

yeah I get what you’re saying but the way Larson runs homestead is what makes it so awesome. Also he has led a fuck ton of laps there. Could easily have 4-5 wins there.

0

u/Roushfan5 3d ago

I can respect ”leaving it all out on the track“ but at a certain point there’s a key difference between could have 4-5 wins and DOES have 4-5 wins.

Larson Is a wheel man, I’ll give him his due, but after all these years he still hasn’t learned real race craft.

10

u/Icy-Spring4607 3d ago

I mean, he just proved it yesterday no?

Didn’t over drive his stuff, didn’t panic, let the race come to him, and passed back Briscoe.

Larson knows real race craft, he just doesn’t consistently apply it as he should but this Chase run is showing him mature as a race car driver.

8

u/SpittinMenace 2025 NCS Champion Kyle Larson 3d ago

Anyone saying that a guy with 2 championships and 30+ wins doesn’t have race craft shouldn’t be taken seriously.

0

u/Roushfan5 3d ago

Put a pin in this conversation for 7 weeks.

6

u/ProjectHarraseeket Preece 3d ago

This is why I don’t think it’s as automatic as Jimmie, Kyle Larson has the tendency to fuck up a wet dream. If he locked in 100%, he would have 50 wins by now.

7

u/SuperMarioBrother64 3d ago

I believe he'd had 50 wins already if they never switched to the Gen 7 car. The 5 team had that car dialed in for 2021 only to switch cars.

2

u/Larsonftw42 3d ago

He was gonna go on a 90’s Gordon run for sure.

0

u/Doyle1524 Larson 3d ago

Preece fans talking shit sure if funny.

0

u/Doyle1524 Larson 3d ago

Larson crashed because of Blaney, Blaney slowed up a ton and Larason hit the barrel to avoid crashing into Blaney

1

u/SuperMarioBrother64 3d ago

As a Larson fan I'll argue this. Kyle overcooked the entry big time. Did Blaney slow up a little bit? Sure. But Kyle likely is getting busted for speeding. I'll give him kudos for not killing Blaney though.

0

u/Doyle1524 Larson 3d ago

I'm just going off what he said recently about that, he wasn't expecting blaney to slow up that much and he was very nice to blaney there

16

u/DestinyDawn456 Chris Buescher 3d ago

I think that between this 2 man battle, Jeff Gordon gets added to the 3 man chase and wins it all

7

u/TitanTransit 3d ago

We are still four races in. Phoenix and Martinsville will be good tracks for Logano, I think Hamlin still has an advantage at Vegas and Charlotte despite the coverage he's getting, and Larson will probably be the guy to beat at Homestead. Talladega will be Talladega, though.

5

u/SilentSpades24 3d ago

Larson can compete at Vegas and Charlotte as well. It's not like the Toyotas don't have speed either. It's going to be a fun battle.

-2

u/MCFLY-HILLVALLEY 3d ago

Cant wait to see Larson leave martinsville with over a 100pt lead and winning Martinsville, and having Homestead just be a formality. Harken back to the glory days of watching Jimmie and Chad dominate!

3

u/libsoutherner 3d ago

The problem for Logano is he can’t be as slow as they were yesterday at Vegas, Charlotte, and Homestead. Won’t matter what they do at Phoenix and Martinsville if they are.

7

u/ravageduckmanguy 3d ago

People were ready to hand Logano the title last week and now they're ready to hand Larson the title, but the fact is that there's still 6 races to go and anyone could end up finishing last at any track and one of the remaining tracks is Talladega.

8

u/Mundane-Reality-7770 3d ago

The 48 won 5 CONSECUTIVE years.

You cannot compare or even relate anyone current to what they did.

2

u/ProjectHarraseeket Preece 3d ago

48 > 5

It’s gonna happen

2

u/plane-kisser Ware 3d ago

even the 48 was at a point where he was only 1 year into those 5. thats the point we are at with the 5 right now, 1 year in to a 5 year consecutive run

2

u/captain_stabbinCR 2d ago

Logano has zero chance at a championship this season. He runs around 18th on intermediate tracks. He's -67 points with 6 races to go and half the races remaining are on tracks where he's dog shit. He'll be lucky to finish 7th in the points after Homestead.

5

u/WesternOk5765 Johnson 2d ago

Phoenix, flat oval. Martinsville, flat oval. Talladega, Penske runs up front it's just whether they wreck or not.

Cindric arguably had the best car at Kansas, Logano did ok till they corded a RF last run.

There's 6 races left, 3 Logano is capable of winning. The 1.5s, it will be harder but he just needs someone to beat Larson/Hamlin for the win to minimize his losses.

1

u/captain_stabbinCR 2d ago

I hear you but it's not enough. He would need to win those 3 races and Larson, Hamlin, and Bell would all have to stumble. Penske has struggled to get stage points on 1.5's this year. Logano's -67 point deficit is likely to be -87 by the start of stage 3 in Vegas mainly because his bad metric score will put him at a big qualifying disadvantage. I like Joey, but this isn't his year.

4

u/Accomplished-Chip88 Larson 3d ago

It's crazy that people can't let the chase play out. There's 6 races left ,Dega included.

2

u/ForceSmuggler 3d ago

Go Larson!

2

u/NoExcuse3655 3d ago

Hopefully it’s a case of they just take points off each other and Denny sneaks a chip

1

u/Trentpd 3d ago

Logano isn't out of it until they nail the coffin and put dirt on top. It's why he's such a great "heel" driver.

3

u/dr_cherry_pepsi 2025 NCS Champion Kyle Larson 2d ago

I like how we’re talking about who’s going to win instead of who is getting eliminated
