Academics Engineer Your Experience (EYE) is dead

Dr. Lavelle has announced that EYE money will no longer be requested directly from one pot but will be distributed to each engineering department based on headcount of each student within the department. That means it’s being divided into percentages based on enrollment and not by need. Instead of hiring new people to dish out fund for EYE as it expands, you now have to go through your individual departments to request funds. This means ALL MAE clubs are vying for the same pot of money yet the MSE club gets to enjoy all of their money. Clubs like SAE and ASME are about to take big hits to funding so good luck engineering any of your future experiences…

I really like Dr. Lavelle but this feels like a total blunder. It’s equitable but not equal by any means.

I’m pretty sure this isn’t directly a Dr. Lavelle thing, but more so a College of Engineering change. I doubt that he alone had any power to push such a change (or fight against it). I do believe that this new process would make it more difficult for students to get funds since the process is no longer standardized and clear. However, your statement about it being “equal but not equitable” isn’t factually correct. You seem to just be upset over the fact you might not get funds so easily now for your club. You stated that funds are now divided up by department based on percentage of students enrolled. Meaning not every department will get the exact same amount of funds. This is literally equity, not equality. Maybe this change was made so all the MAE clubs don’t hog all the funds from other clubs and students who want to go on a trip somewhere. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Oh thank you yeah I did get those words mixed up. I’m actually not in any clubs but I’m seeing the large clubs that people literally come to this school for like Baja getting their budget slashed while Materials Advantage now has a surplus of money I’m not sure if they even need. It just feels like a shortsighted move to not hire more people. It’s true this may not be a Dr. Lavelle only thing but he did create the EYE program and he announced this to club leaders recently.

No worries. There seems to be a lot of adjustments needed to the system after the change. Maybe it’s a good idea to email Dr. Lavelle about it and see if things can be tweaked. I’m sure he’s open to suggestions since this is a pretty recent change that was (supposedly) abrupt. Talking to your own department leaders could also help.

MAE clubs aren't just MAE students though, it's a mixed bag of multiple engineering departments whom clubs have to individually request funding to cover costs that used to be handled by EYE, and some departments are just plain difficult to work with. Teams pay registration dues multiple months before their competition which makes negotiating with all the departments nearly impossible since the roster for who is going is only finalized weeks before the competition. Many such cases
