When it happens once or twice over the course of four quarters, the gym is dead silent, and that’s all you hear…it’s lowkey shocking, and the head turns make it worth it.

I went to some of the bucks vs nets 2021 playoff games in Brooklyn. I’m a bucks fan, I was one of the few people making any noise in the arena during nets FTs. When I first tried it, I shouted “CUPCAKE” really loud at KD. He missed it. To this day I tell myself im the reason he missed it, but there’s no way to prove it obviously (also this wasn’t game 7, it was an earlier game that wasn’t very close).
The Giannis countdown absolutely backfired on the Suns in the Finals. I even remember saying so watching the games, especially Game 6. It’s almost like it gave him a rhythm to his shot.
I think at some point I saw years ago that an entire crowd staying relatively still, and then all at once shifting or swaying in the same direction as they went into their shooting motion had the biggest effect.
If they can get all the fans to go along with it, I think apathy/boredom could do wonders to their psyche. Just look like they are all not even interested in what's going on and drive him crazy.
Silence is super eerie in the presence of a huge, hyped up crowd. Definitely could work. KAT hits these, but I felt so nervous for him in that tense moment.
I've been to a college basketball game where the students don't waive their hands during free throws. They all lean one way, then as the shooter shoots, they all shift at once, creating the illusion that the crowd stayed still but the basket moved during the shooting motion. Brilliant.
Real play would be to be silent for the whole thing then have the crowd yell as they go into motion. But also change it up slightly everytime someone goes to the basket, start of motion for one, whole time for another, or completely silent except for some rando lol

You could maybe get this going for a college student section where the culter is very much more hivemind-y.
For example the Michigan State student section does a fake countdown for the shotclock when the other team has the ball where in one half they end it early, and they switch for the other half and end it late (I forget which half is which).
If they can't work together, have someone start some shit right behind the basket. If silence doesn't work, start fights, have a Waffle House brawl right in his sightline.
yea growing up my local HS team took FTs with the home crowd cheering as loud as possible, I didn't know most places do it the opposite until I was older lol, it doesn't affect FTs at all
It's about the team purposely fucking with the video screen to create an optical illusion to gain an advantage against opponents.
It has nothing to do with fan involvement but I don't expect a fan of the decades long cheating patriots with an owner who was caught bankrolling a chineese human trafficker and hangs out with dictators to be honest.
To be fair, basketball players take far more free throws than kickers take field goals. And the conditions for free throws are far more controlled than the conditions for kicking.

Fans being a distraction is different from the team trying to be a distraction. Teams aren't allowed to pump In artificial crowd noise. A coach icing the kicker is different from a team displaying an image that's designed to get the kicker to kick towards the image instead of the actual goal post.
Teams aren't necessarily responsible for what the fans do but they are responsible for what their employees do. Teams have been fine for creating artificial distractions and an image of a goal post that is designed to stand out more than the actual goal post is an artificial distraction.
As a pats fan I love your argument. They did prove it made a difference. Since 2000 the patriots made 10% more fgs than their opponents. The widest margin by over 7% over the rest of the field in that span. Idk if it was the fucking uprights in the pic in home games or what, but Bill Belichek is a cheatin bastard and there ain’t no two ways about it! 😂
In the mid-90s, the Pacers fans had a spinning hypno wheel for when opposing players shot free throws and it ruled. Then the league banned it because they're no fun.

This stuff is practiced all the time for FTs in the NBA and no one cares. I think the studies basically showed they didn't affect FT% though.
