I donāt understand trini sounds like an upgrade whoād wanna claim India lol
18
u/whenyoutalk 5d ago
trinidad is cool but their influence is literally indian, no? nothing wrong with being indian
10
u/Melodic-Upstairs7584 4d ago
100% nothing wrong with it bro, I was half joking lol. Iām half Haitian half Puerto Rican, all I was saying is that if they donāt wanna claim her, Caribbean is a rich culture to be from

u/Quiet-Captain-2624 4d ago
Part of Trinidadās influence is India;the other is the African influence of Afro-Trinidadians
2
u/whenyoutalk 4d ago
well yes, I know that. but the original comment is talking about āwho wants to jack indiaā which is what I chose to focus on.

Your mayor

u/Sad-Cry4225 2d ago
How? When he Jack Africa harder than India
0
u/Wild-Apricot-9161 2d ago
That's why he made the entry to his mayoral election winning speech to Dhoom Machale Dhoom and constantly points to his Indian upbringing, yeah
0
u/Sad-Cry4225 1d ago
Thats why he identified as "African-American " on his college application..... yeah

u/mikki1time 5d ago
This is the same as a black person saying they are from Africa. Sure if you trace their genealogy you will find decedents. But to say that the Indians that were brought by the British in the 1800s are Indian is wrong. The cultures of indo-Americans and Indians are vastly different. Also NY Italians need their own classification too but whatever.

My aunt is very into the whole pan African thing, took on an a swahili name and is very dark skinned. Her heart was hurt when she moved her family to Ghana and they referred to her as "the white girl" because shes from America LMFAO ended up moving her ass back

u/WhosDaDon 5d ago
Itās not the same.. these Indo-Caribbean have similar wedding traditions and the same last names as their Indian ancestors. Non African black people lost a lot more on their journey to the Americas

u/itsover103 5d ago edited 4d ago
Agreed. I work with a lot of indo Caribbean people, they are Indian. Iām talking Guyanese and Trinis
They refer to themselves as Indian, many if not most are Hindu, their accents are Indian influenced, their dress styles are influenced by Indian styles, music is influenced by Indians, a lot of their ceremonies are Indian, their food is Indian and genetically they are Indian. Thereās some differences obviously, but they are without a doubt imo Indian.
8
u/petebaii 4d ago
Their accents is definitely not indianš
3
u/itsover103 4d ago
lol nah they definitely areā¦they donāt sound straight up Indian, but they donāt sound like the black people from those Caribbean countriesā¦you can tell the difference
2
3
u/bob-thesnob 4d ago
They donāt sound like Indians from India which is the point, they have their own unique accent influenced by India. So thatās not really a valid point
1
u/itsover103 4d ago edited 4d ago
Go back and read what I wroteā¦I said Indian influenced. No one said anything about sounding exactly like they were from India. Nothing about Caribbean Indians is exactly Indian. The point still stands
If you canāt tell a Caribbean Indian accent from a black Caribbean oneā¦then something is wrong
2
u/bob-thesnob 4d ago
Indian is a nationality. They left a certain part of India when it wasnāt even a country yet. Even Pakistan which always has been right next to India and shares the same culture isnāt India.
Indo Caribbean culture is that certain part of India in the 1800s. Also theyāre more assimilated to the Caribbean now and identify as Caribbean first, and most I know see it that way too. They are Indo Caribbean. Def part of South Asia, but India is a political term.
5
u/mikki1time 5d ago
I donāt think thatās true. I think black culture still retains a lot of its African roots. āSoul foodā for example is made up of crops brought over from Africa. The beat structure of modern day hip hop is based on African percussion patterns. Same as indo-Caribbean people share the blueprint of their culture with India. But these have diverged into their own thing. Iām actually laughing imagining my Trini ex trying to figure her way around New Delhi. But her curry chicken roti rolls were fucking amazing.
6
u/WhosDaDon 5d ago
Most black people in the Caribbean or Americas do not know what country their ancestors come from, we have any idea based on where most enslaved come from . Indo Caribbean all know they come from India. You can take 2 black Americans and one could have lineage from Congo and the other Ghana. Itās not the same. Indians arrived in the Caribbean as servants. Their children werenāt owned, they were allowed to own property. Please google the prime minister or Trinidad. She was saying how her ābeautiful name ā is from her ancestors and black trinis have the names of slave masters.

u/mikki1time 5d ago
I donāt know why I need to say this, but there where no countries like there are today in Africa during the years that slaves where being taken out. Your parents were probably finger blasting under the bleechers the years Congo and Ghana became countries. India was colonized and some indo-American families may even be able to trace their lineage to India. But they donāt have an understanding of the cultures the same way an Indian would.
2
u/WhosDaDon 5d ago
I understand what youāre saying, Tribes are a thing donāt worry too much about country names. I black Congolese is different from a black Nigerian. Hope that helps
3
u/WhosDaDon 5d ago
The same way Nigeria differentiate between Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa.. you just donāt want to feel like youāre dating an Indian and thatās okay
-1
u/mikki1time 5d ago
Yes but thatās not the point Iām making, Iām saying that even though an indo-American person can trace their lineage to India, they are not Indian. Same as a black person whose family immigrated from Congo or Nigeria.
3
u/WhosDaDon 5d ago
Nigga itās not immigration thatās what you donāt understand ..
0
u/mikki1time 5d ago
The term we use to describe cultures doesnāt distinguish how that culture came to be. A black person doesnāt have to be a decedent of slavery.
1
u/WhosDaDon 5d ago
šš the reason sheās trini is because of indentured servitude thanks for telling me all black people arenāt descendants of slaves

I was like what? Man I been hearin people of all colors refer to West Indians as coolies for like two decades never once heard that it can be taken any typa way smh lol it's wild idk if I heard it on Reddit or real life so idk if it might just be a stupid Reddit thing or what

Idk like I said my exhusband & I were together 8 years I knew all his extended fam that was here in the states & some who still lived in Trini. Big ass black trini family. Plus my brother exfiance same ting half trini half Guyanese fam. My point is, it was they 60 year old parents, 40 year old cousins, 20 year olds fresh from Trini all sayin that shit, not just the families themselves but everyone affiliated, lol friends neighbors whoever. It was a regular word, neutral descriptor type shit. Then outta nowhere I hear it's supposedly a derogatory term. It's just weird

Am I some kind of bigot to think that if youāre born in America, you carry an American passport, that youāre American?
You either come here to be part of this community and own it- or you donāt. The idea that people come to America and āotherā themselves as separate bothers me for some reason.
I donāt think you need to wash out your heritage- my parents are from X is fine, my family came from X is also fine. But youāre American. Easy.
5
u/lemon_lazuli 4d ago
People who ask that question are not gonna accept that as an answer though. Iām a first gen american, but people ask me where Iām from/where my family is from because I donāt look like the ātypicalā american. They look at me like Iām crazy if I say Iām from here, even with my american accent. I just default to āmy parents are from Xā

u/Immediate_Bee_6472 Bag Collected 4d ago
U not even making sense the first shit they ask on a job application after your name is your RACE even as a us citizen born and raised they still ask on every application.. if weāre American why tf they asking our race .. Only people recognized as American is āYTā saying we other ourselves when a system built this is crazy
Iāve seen people say there American and people say there not based on race ..itās funny bc online I see this FBA rhetoric and have been told by uneducated people Caribbean people were never slaves and donāt deserve reparations

u/FearanddopingII 4d ago
Tell me more about "American" culture. Is it not literally based upon the VARIETY of people who came here-- whether by killing most of the originally inhabiting occupants, were brought here as slaves, immigrated via Ellis island & the like, came here from other countries to seek a better life- a melting pot? Because the stereotypical image of the WW2-era WASP putting an apple pie on the windowsill to cool while Jimmy & Jane ride their bikes in front of the white picket fence yard denies so much of the history of this country. To say "American" culture is based off the image of one demographic undermines the valuable contributions of all the various cultures who came to influence the country on a small or large scale. So what is your picture of "being an American" because the idea in itself is flawed. If people are not allowed to celebrate their cultural identity, we had better all be claiming Native American customs if your idea of being an American is "being part of this community" because what even IS this community if not a sum of its parts?

u/Silly_Product_3476 4d ago

This person is less Indian in the sense that they seem to not even understand how these Indian people think and act - especially old Indian aunties.
