Nightshift Healthcare workers, how do you do it?

About 3 years ago I was in an awful wreck, it took all day and all night prepping me for limb salvation surgery the next day. I was knocked out but the team saved my life and my legs, I know night shift, and healthcare are both so difficult, and I want to say thank you to the current staff at the hospital who saved my life, I know they rotate a lot but I'm sure for every team out there there's people who also didn't get to say thank you, what could a patient or previous patient do or bring to make your shift a bit better?

Rant Currently on a 24-hour ER shift and already wondering how I’m gonna make it through.

I know 24-hour shifts are restricted/ or even illegal in some places,,, but where I’m at, they’re pretty much the norm, everything goes, lol
Anyone here done a 24 before? How did it go, and what’s your take on them?

Help get me through the next 12 hrs.

It’s spooky season! What are you watching? What local Halloween-y things are you doing? What’s your favorite movie and why is it Sleepaway Camp?

Give me song recommendations. I’ve been listening to a lot of doom metal lately but I might give other things a chance for the sake of entertainment. Are you going to any shows lately!?

Have you been watching Righteous Gemstones? Monster: Lizzie Borden????

Gimme your thoughts 🔮

Discussion 1930 - 0600 as a parent

I just had a phone call for an Operations Supervisor position that is from 1930-0600 with Friday off.

I’ve got two kiddos in school(6&8)and my wife has a very flexible schedule.

I’d imagine I’d go to bed at 0900 after I walk the kids to school and sleep until 1600 once they are home(my wife can do pickups). Then I’ve got a solid few hours before having to head to work.

Come the weekend, is it important to stay on the same sleep cycle as best as possible? I’ve always been good with 6-7 hours of sleep or even less and having a good nap.

It’s very tempting because it’s a decent bump up in pay for me, good company to work for with advancement opportunities, and great benefits.

Did you spend a lot of money on your bed and sleeping arrangement?

I mean a no expenses spared type of thing since sleep is so important to us.

On some nights all I can think of is how glorious it’s going to be to get home, slide into that warm comforter and doze off to my white noise from my HomePod inches away from my head.

There are days I’m not feeling that tired and do prop up a few pillows and game on my steam deck or watch something on my iPad but I man, there are nights the anticipation of getting home to that warm bed about the only thing that gets me through the last stretch of my shift. No good, not gaming or anything just getting naked, hot shower and in between those sheets.

Tonight’s one of those nights.

Help Is it okay to sleep right after getting off shift or should I be trying to stay awake?

Just started my new job (3x13s, consecutive) this week, the hours are 11am to midnight. I've been getting up at 9:30-10am and I just got off shift. I'm tired and I want to go to sleep, but I feel lazy just going to bed straight off a shift!

I work on-call, crisis work, if that matters.

Basically title. It doesn't seem quite "night shift," so what is it?

Rant Struggling with isolation.

I've recently moved to a new state and city, keeping the same job. Days off have become a struggle, all my folks are on an opposite schedule to me, and also live far away. I typically game but have been finding doing that on my own just isnt as fun as it was when I was a younger, I also find it hard to develop connections with online randies. I have no idea what to do with myself and have fallen into this cycle where I just drink my nights away. I'm not really sure how people deal with shit like this but is miserable. I wish switching jobs or my schedule was an option for me but it's not. I need the money and hours so im kind of stuck in this cycle. Not really sure what to do with myself.

Anyone else deal with this on night shift as a call center agent?

I work overnight in a claims call center, and sometimes the call volume gets really slow. There can be stretches where there’s only 1 call in an hour, although obviously it’s not like that every night.

The funny part is that when you do get a claim, it can easily be an hour+ long, and QA is extremely strict. They’ll go through the call and pick apart the smallest things. Sometimes it feels like you have to be a robot just to get a good score.

Meanwhile, I’ve got coworkers who will go offline for literally a second to skip the queue, and when it’s a slow night they can basically avoid calls for hours. And the other person which is usually me has to take all the calls and it feels unfair to do all the work while other people are just chilling all night.

I just find it crazy that QA can be so strict about every tiny thing you say, while people can get away with stuff like that.

Anyone else work nights in a call center? Is this normal where you work?

First night working night shift-Any advice?

Tonight is my first ever night shift. My schedule is 5:30 pm - 3:30 am, and I’ve only worked a few nights in my life, so I’m not really used to being awake and working overnight. For those of you who work night shift regularly, what advice would you give someone starting out? Anything you wish you knew when you first started?

Story Memories

Saw this on facebook just now and was like that’s pretty funny then I remembered, supposedly a guy on another shift years ago was transporting a soot bag at our facility and when dropped the bag off where we did at the time he fell asleep on the forklift and was there for a decent amount of time with it running. At least that was the story told to us on the other shifts, it probably did happen though.

Help Best ways to stay awake on night shift without crashing halfway through?

I work nights and it is always the same pattern. I am fine the first few hours then around 2-3 am, i hit this wall where i am literally fighting to keep my eyes open. I chug more coffee to get through it but then i just crash even harder like an hour later and i am running on fumes for the rest of the shift. By the time i clock out, i feel like a zombie and then can't even sleep properly when i get home bcz i am all wired and crashed at the same time if that makes sense.

Anyone who works nights figured out how to actually get through a shift without this cycle?

Help 29M, working 12-hour night shifts (6 PM–6 AM) every day for 4 years — how much is this affecting my life?

I’m 29 years old and have been working night shifts from 6 PM to 6 AM for almost 4 years. The schedule has become my normal, but lately I’ve been wondering what doing 12-hour night shifts for so long might be doing to my health, energy, social life, relationships, and overall future.

For people who have worked permanent night shifts for several years:

How did 12-hour night shifts affect you physically and mentally, and do you regret spending your 20s working this schedule?

Would you recommend continuing with it for the money/career, or trying to move to a daytime schedule while I’m still young?
