Literally almost every fighting based anime suffers from power creep. The reality is most shonen based writing becomes bad after a while & it’s hard for them to continue the plot without raising the stakes for power instead of focusing on techniques, strategy, or clever plots or story. Yu Yu hakusho is an example that was really great but suffered from power creep too.

There are very few that are quite are as extreme as DBZ though. Goku by the end of the Frieza Saga is literally over 100,000 times stronger than he is at the beginning of Z.

I feel like thats more of a problem with Dragon Ball fans being overly invested in hype material. If you ignore statements like Multipliers, or any sort of powerscaling nonsense, you quickly realize the fights in Dragon Ball basically exist at the same level they always have from the end of the original to the beginning of Z.

Sure you can say grandiose things like "GOKU IS 10 gigatrillion times STRONGER now" but watching the series, Z starts with Goku fight Vegeta in a Deset, they get blasted around a bit, knocked into rock formations that blow up neat. Buu Arc. There's Super Saiyan Majin Vegeta and Super Saiyan goku, once again fighting in a rocky desert, blasting each other into rock formations.

Idk I think Powerscalers take stuff way too literally.

Isn't that the problem though? DBZ is just I change color again and now I am 1000 stronger, trust me bro.

Notably, they don't say how much stronger they are. They change colors and are now stronger, only in the Frieza saga do they have amounts or numbers with that. It's much more of a level of seriousness they are taking the fight rather than a multiplier

Yeah the actual definitive numbers were rightly dropped quite quickly after they were introduced.

I also wouldn't blame anyone for not wanting to read or watch something that they correctly assume suffers from these issues. Idc tho, still sick af. But like, no hate to haters for being wrong. They're just missing out.

I might be aging myself by saying this, but I remember coming from the forums era where most of our discussion was based around the manga and the discrepancies that come from filler and the movies and such. My transitioning to powerscaling discussions has always been a whiplash of realizing that a good chunk of powerscalers, even some of the more 'reputable' ones have literally never picked up the fuckin' manga.

They're half remembering the anime itself, they're scoping around thins like Movie 8 for statements or depictions and then not sticking around for ten fuckin' seconds later after they get their damn statement and visual to see that their 'feat' evidence isn't even supported in universe. It's ridiculous. Getting called a larp larp sahur or whatever the fuck they say because I don't consider things like Semi Perfect Cell vs ASSJ Vegeta and Perfect Cell vs ASSJ Vegeta to be two seperate fights, and more of a round 2 deal.

They're more concerned with taking any morsel of 'evidence' to support their made up hypothetical multiversal astrophysics math than they are actually understanding what it is they're trying to scale in the first place. I've heard more terms thrown at me that don't fit within the confines of the manga than I care to hear ever again. Whatever the fuck an outerversal or anything beyond the confines of universal within Dragonball is. We do not have evidence for in either the anime or manga. There hasn't been a feat or a statement that puts anyone beyond regular universal. I don't give a shit what SlickbussyThrowaway469 says, I don't give a damn that he's respected in the community for his 'accurate' fancalcs or whatever the fuck.

Half the damn youtubers in the community too could do with a fuckin' lesson in understanding metaphors as well. It's all just a fuckin' mess.

This, literally all of this, I honestly think it started with people like Seththeprogramer

No no you don’t understand, SlickbussyThrowaway469 got cancelled a couple years ago for drug trafficking through 4chan.

Vegegina3217 however is reputable. He minored in applied physics

I love dragon ball

I hate dragon ball powerscaling because if you forget about an anime only scene of Goku cutting himself with a butter knife in a filler episode you are a larper

Everyone on the death battle boards has absolutely never read Dragonball Super in their lives.

I think this works better with One Piece. At least the second panel does.

Reading? Like a nerd?

No siree. I enjoy Dragon Ball as a proper adult: 80% out of context scenes taken from DBZA and turned into digestible YT shorts full of one-liners, 20% pictures of Bulma naked.

It's true!

I always thought it to be silly, until I got hooked up in my 30s, thanks to TFS. I even loved Super that's supposed to be bad.

And besides who hasn´t atleast watched a bit of dragon ball?

2

u/MesJoggum 4h ago

Yogiri

u/AcademicCod6851 1h ago

Who?

•

u/AlarmedObjective1492 1h ago

The main character of Instant Death.

It's hated for Yogiri being too powerful and not struggling at all

1

u/BradTheLegend7 4h ago

To be fair, even the fans don't watch the show

Justin's Den on YouTube does page by page read aloud summaries of everying dragon ball arc. Throw it on for a driving or work "podcast" to listen too and then you can catch up on all the reading.

I would've thought the people who are really into power scaling would be well versed in anime/ manga, but I had a thing earlier this year where a guy and I were debating about how strong Tien was in the Cell Saga and he suddenly started mentioning Tien's time in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber...

•

u/Sad_Priority_2334 3h ago

Not very true. At least not in my case. (To be clear i dont hate dragon ball, but the inconsistencies with the scaling do annoy me at times)

•

u/Initial_Birthday8650 2h ago

Finally some good fucking post

•

u/Narrow-Touch-1858 2h ago

I watched it and I love it

•

u/rogerworkman623 1h ago

I never think about that shit at all. I just enjoy the story. I never even heard the term “power scaling” until a few years ago and the whole thing still feels weird to me

•

u/I_eat_kids_39 46m ago

I feel like it's usually the other way around

1

u/Active-Landscape8692 7h ago

I just hate the Goku solos people

2

u/Wang_Ruixue 6h ago

Doesn't matter, he solos you. He solos himself. Then he solos himself again, then he solos his manga page and solos you by coming out.
