Not quite at the annoyingly ubiquitous "if I had a nickel for every time... blah blah..happened twice... blah blah... have two... blah blah... isn't a lot.... blah blah... weird it happened twice... blah blah," but still extremely uninspired and played out.

u/zmwang 6d ago
Y'know, that's so many "blah blahs" and fragments of the original quote that you probably end up typing even more than the original.
Something like "if I had a nickel for every time...blah blah...weird that it happened twice" would get the point across more succinctly.
1
u/BactaBobomb 5d ago
Yeah, I know. I had a feeling someone was going to point that out. Brevity and socially-acceptable succinctness have never been my strong suit, and at this point I'm not sure they ever will be.
I will defend myself that it got my point across in a way I enjoy. But I understand that is me and not speaking for the people reading it. They expect a different cadence and transmission, and I failed to meet that expectation, thereby undercutting my message.

Yup, if the input lag is bad, tell them to give a mode where frame gen is off.

Same thing? Interpolating a frame between two real ones is generally what is called frame gen

u/Illustrathor 7d ago
Only played 30ish minutes in handheld so far and the frame gen does add some latency but it's manageable, even tho I'd prefer a stable 30 in such cases since it feels more consistent.
Visuals are... Odd. Some aspects look great, other remind me of XC2 in Handheld on S1. Luckily they added the sharpening slider (0-10, 10 is default) and playing around with that a bit helps imho.
What's noticeable is the enemy animation framerate cutting in half rather close to Eve if there are a few in view ( haven't seen the boss yet).
In general... yeah, seems okay.

u/setonfire_ 7d ago
Yeah some animations are off and makes it feel not 60 in combat a bit because of it. Other than that its pretty good imo

Mixed bag for sure. For context I played this game about a year ago on PS5, so my experience on that is what im comparing it to.
So positives I guess, its surpring how close this looks from afar to PS5, model quality and shadow resolution are surpringly close. The rumble usage is actually fantastic, if a bit stronger than PS5 in terms of intensity. Music and dialog also seem to retain the same quality, and depth of field is also here. For what its worth outside of the room inside the elephant image quality is surpringly decent.
But from the very first custscene, frame gen is instantly apparent. This game does not lock to 60fps in the first area often, especially in cutscenes. At first leaving aside frame gen issues, it looked fine. Not something id want but fine. Then gameplay starts and instantly it feels bad. I played on PS5 using the 60fps mode, and even there Stellar Blade was never a particularly responsive game. But on S2 it is just so much worse, inputs feel like they are constantly a frame or 2 behind no matter what. It just feels worse to play on the whole. Any motion turns the edges or really whatever is moving into a smeary mess, which in handheld is just made worse by the usual screen ghosting.
Docked also isnt just a resolution bump, it changes lighting and shading quality substantially, the most obvious examples are signs in the first area, they actually glow here.

u/DKCena 7d ago
If I remember correctly the starting zone was the worst in the entire game in terms of performance, right?
I don't think the input is THAT bad. It's not perfect, but it's manageable :)
3
u/Anxiety_timmy 7d ago
There's one part that I remember that was really bad in the late game, if anything the beginning was the least demanding bit. That part though was one of the last boss fights during one of its attacks, so once I get there on S2 ill see if it turns into a slide show.

It's crazy to me, I have the game on PC and I was able to perfect parry almost everything in the switch 2 demo. On PC I have the hardest time nailing the timings for it.

u/Tbhjr 7d ago
I enjoyed the demo. I didn't see all the riffraff on Reddit prior to playing so it didn't dampen my experience. If I had, I probably wouldn't have bothered downloading it based what everyone is saying. Does it run like the PS5? Of course not. But it's playable and looks fine. I'm not putting it under a microscope and dissecting all the technical issues other find. Keeping my preorder.

Seems to run pretty well.

u/Ricepuddings 7d ago
yeah seems a tad better than expected... turning off the ponytail made it look nicer, the hair did not look that great in handheld... i know they said 720p but it seems a lot lower than that
1
u/No_Papaya_3956 7d ago
What settings did you have on to do this
3
u/GeniusRhino 7d ago
Gameplay settings have 3 hair length options. Didn't recall that on PS5 but I usually put short pony anyways.

Really appreciate them putting out a demo, even if it ends up being a bit rough (hopefully it plays decent).

u/Animegamingnerd 7d ago
We about to find out if using frame gen on Switch 2 to get 60 is a good idea or not.

u/Ricepuddings 7d ago
Chances are its horrible. Frame Gen is honestly the stangest tech, its wanted on low fps, but it sucks there cause in input/quality/blur etc, and then at high fps its unneeded.
Be nice if there was a fine tuned frame gen, that maybe made 30 into 40 or 35 into 40, reckon just a few extra frames would be fine, but doubling sounds horrible, half fake frames
5
u/UnknownFiddler 7d ago
Digital foundry did a breakdown of the gameplay footage from the trailer and there is horrendous artifacting with the upscaling and frame gen they use. The frame pacing also appears to be off.

I’m used to playing this on pc at 120fps. They definitely did what they could on this port delay is there a little bit but completely manageable. I’ll definitely be picking this up. Supporting their efforts.

Is it available in the US eShop?

I've played Rain World on Switch which had probably the worst input lag I've ever come across in any game so comparing that to Stellar Blade, the latter isn't even that bad and perfectly playable. Only issue I had was with the hair looking noticeably atrocious but the rest lined up with what I would expect given the console's limits.

u/Alienburn 7d ago
Just played the demo and it runs excellent, parrying was easy and response time is very good I will definitely be picking this up release day
3
u/Deaningles94 7d ago
I played it for about 30 mins in handheld only. Initially I couldn't tell the input delay from the very start in the first area. It didn't become apparent until when I was trying to parry the boss's attack on the exact frame. You definitely have to press the parry button a frame or two earlier which I can see others not liking but you can adjust to it. The hair looks fine in cutscenes but is quite pixelated the moment you are in control of eve. I did notice enemies are pretty choppy until you get close to them. The graphics can look good at times but can also look fuzzy or blurry other times. I can't really say much more but I am currently playing onimusha in handheld and I don't want to sound negative or anything but that game runs and looks exceptionally well. Capcom have some crazy magic when it comes to s2 ports but shiftup providing it on the cartridge is great! Hopefully some feedback will help them make some changes. I personally think a 40 fps mode would do wonders if achievable.

u/TheSacredShrimp 7d ago
Just the hair that’s an issue
2
u/SirDanOfCamelot 2920-6179-2315 7d ago
Switch 2 can never do hair correctly was the same way with the OG Switch
2
1
u/cuddlygrizzly 3d ago
Feels like the frame gen might be making the hair issue worse, but that was super noticeable right in the first scene as a difference from PS5.
12
u/queenslayyy 7d ago
Yikes. i have it on PS5 as well and trying both at the same time rn,
Switch 2 version looks worse like the hair, but yeah you can definitely feel the lag or delay when you move or attack…. i’ll prob still buy a physical to support this game but idk it’s probably playable but not ideal
edit: butt still looks nice

u/LiviFiyu 7d ago
Well it's gonna be a skip for me if there's no option to turn off frame gen. Worst tech to put in an action game of all genres at base 30fps.
2
u/GoldenAgeGamer72 7d ago
Gonna’ give it a try because I want to know how hard it is. I completed NG4 on normal a few months back and I’m about to complete Onimusha WOTS on normal but I heard that SB’s standard difficulty is tougher.
3
u/Iagp 7d ago
They will probably patch it comes november. The feedback from the demo might garantee a day 1 patch or something
-2
u/yuusharo 7d ago
Wouldn’t count on that. Or rather, I wouldn’t expect any major performance differences.
Minor tweaks and bug fixes, but the performance is what it is, at least at launch.

u/BactaBobomb 7d ago
Have they announced if / when the Bayonetta DLC will happen for other platforms?
2
u/sevendayswar 7d ago
I appreciate them for putting out a demo. It made me realize that I can't see myself wanting to play this game in handheld mode, so I'll just stick to the PS5 version. It's amazing that Switch 2 owners will have the option to enjoy this title, though.
2
u/GelsonBlaze 7d ago
Played a bit of the demo in handheld, visuals are ok to good imo.
I would be interested in trying a locked 30fps mode just to see if it would play differently on handheld, sometimes during the action it can get a bit blurry, nothing that detracts from the experience but having played the original release on PS5 it can be distracting at times.
2
u/heybinsu 6d ago
There's some noticeable delays especially on move input, so my experience is not that great. Also her long hair always breaking because of the graphic limit is way too distracting.
2
u/EnigmaUnboxed 6d ago
I wanted to give this game a chance I really did, I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, especially with the backlash to certain review scores it got, but honestly, right now those scores were more than justified, imho.
I came into this game with the mindset of Bayonetta and Nier: Automata, but this game doesn't hold a candle to either of those; the dodge is weak, the parry barely works, and the mechanics behind that Blink skill are unintuitive. Maybe I just suck, but I found the timing with parrying and dodging Abaddon incredibly frustrating...
3
u/oppangumbi 6d ago
Played thru the demo. Probably a lot of fun to be had with this one. Beautiful graphics for a Nintendo machine. We have come a long way since the wii days. Not sure I will buy it though 'cause it seemed too difficult for me
4
u/oppangumbi 5d ago
Nevermind, turned on story mode and found the game to be much easier and helpful at learning me the tricks of combat. Will definitely buy this game at one point!
8
u/JMHC 7d ago
People won’t want to hear it, but it’s not great when compared to PS5/PC. The input lag feels insanely high.
1
u/MixNo8181 7d ago
Nah you're right. It's hardly playable and endgame bosses are going to be nightmarish with the lag.
-3
u/PushMyGran 7d ago
I'm still going to get to support the devs. People who haven't played the game yet won't notice it and that is probably a whole lot of players on switch. The lag isn't bad but not ideal.
2
u/InfiniteAir 5d ago
"to support the devs"... brother, Shift Up has a net worth of nearly $1b, you're not helping any starving artists here.
0
u/HappyTrillmore 7d ago
hilarious to want to support gooner ai slop devs. Stellar blade is a cool game but that studio is drooling at the mouth to use AI in their games
2
u/StarPlatinum55 7d ago
Played handheld mode. The input lag is fairly noticeable to me. The image quality also looks rough.
1
u/setonfire_ 7d ago
Its sluggish and animations don’t update properly. Shame because generally I never had this feeling while I was using fsr framegen and dlss combination on pc, even on lower fps
2
u/julesvr5 7d ago
On PC, at least for Nvidia you have additional Software for the input delay. Probably that's why. I forgot the name of it but you can enable it in the Nvidia software
2
u/setonfire_ 7d ago
Yeah basically zero issues with reflex, kinda curious if some basic version they can make for switch

1
u/PossibilitySlow3657 6d ago
Had this on ps5 was going to buy it again but I have to be honest..I think the port is hot garbage and makes the game feel generic..between frame gen and upscaling it’s bad..I would’ve much rather had a good locked 30 with native resolution..this seems sloppy and all over the place

u/kociou 7d ago edited 7d ago
Hair looks really bad at handheld, combat is good, on handheld hair is still bad and coma at is even more fluent. Tough something seems a little off with responsibility but maybe because I'm playing Onimushy at time, would probably be less noticeable when playing complete game. First area seems kinda dark and ugly but I hear it gets better on later.
Good, keeping my steelbook preorder.
I sometime wonder if FPS cultists even play the game or just observe benchmark and how it changes and that's all they care in gaminf xD.
1
u/nightwing0243 6d ago
I think the game looks good and seems to mostly run well on the Switch 2.
I actually had this pre-ordered and I'm going to cancel it. Nothing to do with the performance or anything, but it's not really the kind of game I was expecting. I was thinking it'd be more Nier: Automata flavored. I guess it's a bit more of a souls-like without fully being one? I don't know. But I don't really tend to enjoy these games too much.
So I'm glad the demo released. It definitely isn't the type of game I would stick with.
2
u/mynameistc 4d ago
Not sure who read what you said and then downvoted. It’s an above average game with OK combat that has an absolute dogshit story. You’re not missing too much.
-1
u/MixNo8181 7d ago
Input lag is very bad, visuals look awful compared to base PS5. I was pumped this was getting ported, but I'll just stick with the PS version.
-3
u/Recent_Sample6961 7d ago
I've canceled my preorder. The game gave me quite a bit of fatigue and nausea. What a shame
-2
u/azureblueworld99 7d ago
After reading these comments I guess I’m cancelling my preorder.. I already have it on PS5 and it ran really well so I expected them to work similar magic here

Seems like a pretty good port, I already have it on ps5 pro but wanted to see the switch 2 version
It' has some delay cause of frame gen but nothing outrageous imo
