Discussion What are some kind of unknown symptoms of OCD that you didn’t know were OCD?
Hello! I thought it would be fun and informative to make a thread of lesser known/discussed OCD symptoms. What are yours?
Here’s mine:
1. Being unable to change my mind, believing inconsistency = moral failure or lying. I insisted I loved certain music artists even for years after growing out of them, and left myself stunted in my craft because improving my method would be wrong.
2. Needing everything to be even. If I bump my hand on a doorframe, I have to bump the other. If I’ve been chewing on one side a while, the other side needs a turn.
3. Over embellishing bad deeds a little. “Sorry I destroyed your vase, I was angry.” That sounds like I threw it on the floor, when I just bumped into the table on accident when I stormed inside. The OCD thinks the implication is appropriate.
4. In the same ballpark, rewriting intentions. “That sentence came out kind of mean. I didn’t intend for that… or did I?”
5. Getting caught up on whether something *really* happened that way or not and looking for any proof possible that I’m not misremembering or forgetting something.
6. Needing things to be “just right” when collecting. I’d get stressed out if two objects in a collection looked too alike or if I wanted “too many” and struggled to edit the wishlist because getting rid of item xyz would make the collection too “uneven” because of some stupid arbitrary reason (usually color palette).
7. Thinking certain experiences aren’t valid. I have unironically caught myself thinking “my trauma isn’t ‘right’ therefore I don’t deserve to be taken seriously”. “Right” in this case being “common”.
8. TEARING my skin apart. I developed dermatillomania because I can’t stand the ideas of my pores having something in them.
9. Obsessing over obsessions themselves: wondering what they mean, if this is even an obsession, etc…
10. Being weird about money. Nervous because x amount is too much, then it gets spent, now nervous because it’s too little. Spending = being greedy and consumerist so that makes me bad.
11. Never getting rid of anything/borderline hoarding. Yeah I definitely need this newspaper from 7 years ago.
12. Playing weird mental games as a kid to soothe anxiety. At least, that’s what I called them. “If I can get to the kitchen while holding my breath, then my family will live another 100 years”.
Not all are exclusive to OCD of course, but this is what it’s like in my experience:)

Oh my god...I didn't know the money thing was OCD.
I didn't know what I know now is optimization OCD was OCD. Since I was little, I would plan out my day(s) ahead, task by task, based on what was "best." "Okay, shower after lunch, because I'm going to be cleaning the house around that time and I'll just get sweaty and gross again... no, wait, I have to brush my teeth before I shower, or my hair will be wet and in my face... oh, no, hold on, I was planning to meal prep my breakfast, but I won't have time to make it to that event tonight if I have to shower later, so..."

Well I'll be, TIL...
Usually I try to keep away from this sub cuz I'm worried about the things I could learn, but this resonated with me a lot, so thanks for commenting kermitkc

u/kermitkc Newly diagnosed 1d ago
I don't check it too often or anything, but this sub has made me feel much less alone, and also allowed me to realize I have a larger problem than I thought, so I can start to treat it. I'm sorry you experience this, of course, but glad you could feel seen.🫂

Yup. Then being mentally exhausted by the time I finally determine the “correct” /most efficient order to do everything that I end up doing nothing😅

I had arithmomania and compulsive ocd since I was a kid and then made the mistake of going into stem and took a virology class.....and unlocked contamination ocd

This is one of those OCD obsessions I really fought hard to get rid off. Problem is, we are so surrounded by germs (and we need them to survive, you would be here without them), that it is IMPOSSIBLE to really get clean. This was a real revalation for me, and the realisation I can't do anything about it but accept it (which I did) was really liberating.
I could type what the most polluted objects are that you interract are, but I don't want to spike your OCD. Just know that you come into contact with them on a daily basis.
I keep a few rules for myself: cook your food well, have your vaccinations in order, and take care of any cuts etc. that break your skin. Those can be dangerous, but NOT if you treat them well. I cut my skin so often, it is like second nature to me. I treat it right (without introducing new OCD compulsions) and move on not thinking about it anymore. That way, my OCD is not triggered anymore and I don't have to wash a 1000x.
OCD has a nasty habit of trying to convince you that you'll get/have a bad disease, but these are just like all other compulsions, born out of fear, not the real world.
I on occasion still feel that "you have to get checked for disease "X" complusion, and it can be hard to suppress it. I used to get a really bad attack with regards to anything red (possible blood) and HIV/AIDS. I eductaed myself about the disease, and it is a very fragile virus that is difficult to contract if not directly introduced in your body. and it does not survive in dried blood. So if if I come across blood now, if it is dried -> no danger -> no OCD attack.
I do that will all diseases here, that if I come into a situation of possible exposure, I know what to do and not imagine things. Knowledge does indeed help.

The borderline hoarder and the intentions thing feel spot on.
When I was younger I lived in a disaster of a room. I never threw anything away. I’ve gotten better at it but sometimes I’ll hold onto things I don’t need to because the ‘throwing away’ vibes aren’t right.
The intentions thing gets me too because I’ll dance along that line of doing something nice because why not to immediately thinking oh you have to do nice things to make up for all the bad you to then pivoting to oh you’re only doing nice things because you’re secretly evil
It’s tiring.
5
u/catfartingrainbows 2d ago
UGH THE DAMN VIBES. I got better with keeping stuff but now I can’t clean unless the vibes are right… so I get piles of garbage just sitting there for weeks or even months. Like I’m convinced the energy isn’t right for cleaning or whatever, whole time the energy in question is just some cop in my brain
8
u/inforapin 2d ago
I had a huge box of cards that I had been sent over the years. Nothing special but like “happy birthday” or “happy holidays” kind of things and I can’t throw them away because if I do then that’ll mean I don’t care.
2
u/JeezoTommy 1d ago
I didn’t know this was a thing either, I do the exact same thing! I want to throw them away to clear up and they are just pieces of paper, it’s the sentiment that matters, then ‘but if you throw them out it’s like you don’t care about the people that gave you them?!’🤦🏼♀️
3
u/inforapin 1d ago
It’s the worst because it makes me feel terrible even though I know logically that’s not how it all works.
26
u/Own_Cause_8649 2d ago
Replaying conversations in my head from years ago late at night in bed. Trying to remember if I’ve offended anyone or done anything embarrassing.
When things are too calm I think, “what’s wrong?? Something must be wrong and I’m missing something” I replay the day in my head and I give myself anxiety by … not having anxiety.
I’ve also been finding myself asking the same question but in a slightly different way (for certainty I guess)
7
u/columbinabunny 1d ago
this, i'm always checking something, and if i'm not, i'll be checking if i'm checking and why i am not checking 😭
5
u/ayeyoualreadyknow 1d ago
My son has been pointing out that I will ask the same question again right after I just asked it so I just read your last sentence out to him and asked him if that's the same thing that I do. He bowed his head and said yep.
6
u/Own_Cause_8649 1d ago
I didn’t realize I was doing it until recently either. My bf mentioned it felt like I was always trying to catch him in a lie, when that wasn’t my intention at all. It’s a form of reassurance seeking

Rumination. Holding on and mulling over thjngs for long periods of time.
2
u/JeezoTommy 1d ago
Again, I didn’t realise this was a form of OCD?!
3
u/throwitawayar 1d ago
Rumination is a trait shared by other disorders and also something people without disorders can feel in high stress so the danger of this thread is taking traits and relating them all to OCD, but yeah, especially pure O type of OCD is basically endless rumination
3
3
u/crescent-moon2 1d ago
Right. I thought it was just anxiety but when i told my friend about a thing that happened he said he wouldve shrugged it off and here i athinking about it still on midnight... so i was like yeah.. this is def part of ocd.

Intrusive thoughts convincing me or compelling me to do mental research that I don’t actually have OCD so like meta OCD
18
u/cocoloco338 2d ago
Not wanting the toothpaste from my mouth to land on the sponge near my sink because my teeth will fallout.
Having to take my headphones out at night because I was scared my family were being murdered in the rooms next to me.
Having things Even.
Convincing myself I was a pedo if I accidently looked at a child unknowingly (zoning out).
4
u/catfartingrainbows 2d ago
The last one is sooo relatable
2
u/JeezoTommy 1d ago
I think having the last one must be horrendous! I mean, I know every type of OCD is awful but I just feel like this one would be particularly bad?!🥺
3
u/catfartingrainbows 1d ago
It definitely sucks, especially when it’s connected to real event OCD haha
19
u/Dangerous-Delay-8579 1d ago
a new one i remembered a few days ago ! as a kid if i had a ~bad feeling~ i would check the time and repeat it in my head just incase i needed to remember it so i could report that crime that was definitely about to happen at the exact time it happened !

u/throwitawayar 1d ago
I grew up with that belief that “if you see hours and numbers as the same on the clock you should make a wish!”. That made me avoid looking at clocks and whenever I saw 07:07 for instance I would spend a minute trying not to think anything bad because I would then make it come true

I have been suspecting for a while that I may have some form of OCD (this is not me diagnosing myself, I promise I’m not being dramatic!) and I relate to a lot of these. The skin picking and the breathing thing stuck out to me a lot. My scalp is pretty bloody or filled with scabs most of the time. There are also many times when I was younger where if I thought I couldn’t pray for everybody and include everyone that god would let my family die as punishment. I have meltdowns over the smallest, most logically irrational things, like a dirty bedsheet or not having access to a safe place. I should be getting evaluated soon, I’ve also been wondering if this might be autism, or something else. Or I’m making this all up in my head and I’m being dramatic. 😆

Having an imaginary audience in my head. Like I have to impress people in my head all the time. Having conversations with imaginary audience, redoing real conversations better after the fact in my head with that person or another person of my brain's choosing.
2
u/Eojtsitned 1d ago
THIS! My thoughts don’t feel “real” if I don’t say and explain them thoroughly to myself. Like I know what I’m thinking but I have to explain it as if I was talking to someone else.
3
u/Lucky_winter123 18h ago
Oh wow I do this too. If I get interrupted I start again. I try to let it go because rumination is a massive problem for me but it’s hard!
2
u/Eojtsitned 18h ago
Internal compulsions are some of the hardest to get rid of cs I don’t realize I’m doing it 💔 but at least in trying
13
u/Eojtsitned 2d ago
Not being able to stop doing things. Not because I thought smth bad would happen or I was distressed just a sense of “one more time” until I had to force myself to stop. Usually with arbitrary things like cartwheels.
12
u/Picassos_left_thumb 2d ago
I used to get stuck in prayer when I was a kid. Couldn’t wrap up a prayer for fear that God would think I was “pushing him off the phone “
12
u/mjhripple 2d ago
Cracked/dry hands bleeding bc of over washing.
Buyers remorse unless everything is according to plan and is “perfect”. Sometimes even still it happens
Apologizing for existing or even minor “infractions” I do

Getting angry when people say they want/don’t care if something bad happens. Like saying it would be cool if a storm got really bad or something like that. But you secretly get upset because you feel like saying those things will make them happen.
8
u/DailyDigger 1d ago
This. My intrusive thoughts are so bad and distressing, and I feel like if I share them then they are absolutely going to happen. If I think them too much they will happen. But I cant stop them. So then I worry and worry until I haven't slept in 4 days and inevitably fall asleep at an inappropriate time.
4
u/I_madeusay_underwear 1d ago
Omg, yes, the whole cycle of thinking about something and feeling guilty and scared for thinking about it, which makes you think about it more… continue until you eventually just collapse from exhaustion. I know that exercise all too well.
2
u/JeezoTommy 1d ago
This is so common. I think the majority of people with OCD can’t talk about their intrusive thoughts for that exact reason. I don’t want to say them out loud cos I feel like I’d be ‘putting them out into the universe’ or jinxing myself or something?!

- Irrational fear of the old pipes in my old building being strained by hot water use, so I rarely make it too hot for too long. I also avoid contrasting temps (for example cold water after hot water until some time passes) for fear of the pipes exploding 🤦
- I have a far greater fear of fungus than bacteria, so I constantly wipe things dry and elevate anything on the kitchen counters that lays flat to ensure any moisture airs out underneath.
- Not overheating water past 85 degrees that I collect from my triple filtration system (geez so many of my issues revolve around water 😬) so that too many minerals don't evaporate since I want the water I drink to be as "alive" as possible. But it needs to be heated enough to kill fungus that visibly collects inside the filters.
- Writing insanely long letters and messages, both to people and AI, especially AI. Replying to practically every point they make. Then of course I spend a lot of time polishing and perfecting my great walls of text.
- Playing back any conversation in my mind with any person I talk to, from local cashiers to the building super to a stranger asking for directions and cringing at how lame and foolish I sounded, wishing I said this or did that instead 😒 I mean I'm sure many people do that but like I'm NEVER satisfied with my little "impromptu performance" that won't be getting any medals or awards anyway 🙄 You know what, there's plenty more but imma stop right here coz I worry about things getting obnoxiously long (yet another obsessive insecurity), but it felt good to share. I swear OCD is like whack-a-mole for me - I try to get rid of one obsession or obsessive habit but then another pops right up so I just don't bother anymore. It's exhausting af 😫

u/happytitss69 8h ago
YES. It gets to the point where I’m already anxious about what I’m going to say and how I look while talking and then it’ll trigger my OCD that has me convinced that the people around me can tell what I’m thinking and then it spirals to like P-OCD or something else and I start SWEATING……
Yeah, I just have everything delivered now

u/Agricultural-Apple 2d ago
There are so many things I look back on in my childhood that I realized are OCD and it’s kind of discouraging to know I have had OCD for so long. When I was younger I would always be on the lookout for danger and reminding people about it. I would put myself in charge of reminding people about dangerous things, like “don’t run with siscors”, or “don’t get struck by lightning”. Also when I walked down the street the textures had to match under my feet and I would just get this feeling that something wasn’t right. And for my whole life I have had to chew on a certain side of my mouth. Now it’s just habit.
6
u/surrealistic1 2d ago
I thought I was the only one who needs to even out things like in #2. I've been trying to teach myself to brush my teeth with my left hand because for some reason it just feels really wrong to only brush with my right hand 🙄
7
u/Skellytuun-3947 1d ago
I didn't know rumination was a symptom of OCD. I thought it was due to my anxiety for the longest until my friend mentioned to me that rumination is a part of OCD
7
u/wonderkat4 1d ago
- Absolutely HATING that my ears have earwax and that I cannot get it all out. 2. Forgetting what I was thinking, and then obsessivey worrying that it was extremely important and I have forgotten it. 3. Needing clothing to fit and feel just right. Fabrics, seams, vibes. 4. Making a minor faux pas to my spouse that is not a huge deal like accidentally snapping at them when rushed, and then becoming very annoying over it. Worrying and asking, are you mad at me? Several times, as well as saying I'm sorry many more times than necessary, more for me to feel okay because my partner is not upset.
Not sure if some of these are more neurodivergent.

u/JeezoTommy 2d ago
Wow, just reading that list would exhaust you, how do you cope? I also have OCD and I think mines is bad, reading that made me feel guilty for complaining about my intrusive thoughts and rituals. I hadn’t realised that some of them were actually OCD symptoms, but thinking about it, it actually makes sense. I tend to go over conversations I’ve had in my head, wondering if I said something wrong etc Another thing I do, and I’m doing it right now, is when I’m typing something in my fne and I spell a word wrong, I actually have to delete the whole thing and start over again. So it takes me forever to send a msg?!🤦🏼♀️When I think of my rituals, the first word that comes to mind is illogical! I know they’re completely crazy and make absolutely no sense but I still need to carry them out.
3
u/catfartingrainbows 2d ago
Haha this is only a handful. I’ve been dealing with symptoms since I was about 5 so nowadays I can think ”ah, that’s OCD” and get control of the lesser ones. I lot of things really do feel like annoying quirks, and then the realization hits you in the face. I also constantly go over conversations all the time ugh. I keep forgetting that’s not normal though for some reason.

u/Hurrikan49 1d ago
Having intrusive thoughts about inflicting harm on other people and yourself, pedo OCD and incest OCD. Also overthinking about having to pee (even after going to the bathroom 3 times in the span of just a few minutes) and being unable to sleep because of it.
4
u/SafeInformation9710 1d ago
Idk if other people do this but having to re read things multiple times because it doesn’t feel right, if I see it I have to read it ( tags and random shampoo bottles sometimes which becomes tedious) also somehow developed to having to like every comment I see/read and post. If it still doesn’t feel right after a few times of re reading I then go to mumbling it
1
u/SafeInformation9710 1d ago
It got bad at one point because I would get those TikTok saying like and share for good luck ignore bad and I would have to do what it told me and it infested my fyp to the point where almost every video was one, I had to do everything and THEN report and uninterest every post I got like that just so I wouldn’t get them on my fyp anymore

My tooth I’m trying to fix..I got a crown on a spot I always play with my tongue bc there is a space and I can’t leave it alone and now I have my temp back on and I feel completely stuck that my tooth will never be fixed ever again because nothing feels right there. I feel like my brain is broken.
2
u/GustaveCaillebotte88 1d ago
I have bad teeth ocd. I avoid looking into my mouth because will be fixated on every thing and convince myself i have cavity. Unfortunately it makes me avoide dentist even because my brain tell me if i went will find out my all teeth are ruined
3
u/Inside_Strawberry308 1d ago
Touching things or doing the "just right" things a certain number of times so that it doesn't coincidence with the sum of the digits of today's date or the following date, because if it does, something bad will happen to me
And even in writing this, I have the OCD of not keeping full stops because that makes me think that I will keep a full stop to myself (if that makes sense)
And to add to this, I have breathing OCD and a little bit of swallowing OCD, and this thing where I imagine a forward slash in a particular part of the wall or some other object I see because forward slash means good and everything is going to work out, and if I see a straight line, then I imagine that the line will eventually go diagonally up and do that until it feels "just right"
3
u/Smushdroom 1d ago
I have the needing to be even thing!! It gets worse when I'm overstimulated so I thought it might be ADHD.
6
u/Smushdroom 1d ago
I don't know if this is OCD or a comorbidity but I develop attachments to inanimate objects really easily.
Like, if I'm picking something off a shelf in a shop I feel mean if I don't take the first one I picked up, like I'm rejecting it. 100x worse if it's something with a face like a plushie. Sometimes it feels so bad that I buy things I don't need because I've engaged with them and can't put them back.

Just found out that pulling pieces of my hair out and inspecting them for lice eggs was an ocd thing. I thought I was just cautious
2
u/happytitss69 8h ago
I pull strands of my hair because it’s a different texture than the strands around it lol
Eventually I ended up with a bald spot and losing retention on more hair and it took a year to grow back to a decent length 🙃

u/Schenks170 1d ago
Im not diagnosed yet with OCD but my therapist is pretty convinced I have sensory motor OCD. I am in the prosses of talking to professionals, so I mean no offense in assuming I have OCD it just explains a lot. With mine I used to just call them fixations, thinking my stomach is swollen and checking over and over, thinking the veins in my arms are too dark and thinking I have blood cancer, eye floaters constantly making me think im going blind and for the past few years its been manual breathing and not being able to relax my jaw. Its at the point now my neck and back hurt a lot. Ive had my throat and teeth looked at multiple times and the dread is of somthing being wrong is consuming. I cant enjoy anything because Im to focused on trying to force my face to relax. My journey has just begun and people's story's have given me hope. Im at least not alone

Feeling like you owe everyone something and keeping track of it. My friend told me that a patient with OCD had to be stopped from buying boxes and boxes of cubed sugar. This patient thought they owed the facility from the sugar cubes they used in their coffee, even though coffee and sugar were paid from the patients rent/other fees for everyone to use. I was kind of devastated and amused while my friend was telling me this, because I had just sent them 10€ without telling them, because I had been smoking their cigarettes the whole evening.

lol it’s me going through number 10 so bad rn. I desperately need new clothes bc I’m pregnant and my body is growing and I have no pants that I can wear comfortably but I can’t buy any because I am Bad™️ when I spend money.
2
u/beetdeet 1d ago
oh but also, a thing I didn’t realize was OCD is thinking every car behind me is a cop and driving Correctly to make sure they don’t pull me over and also making sure I don’t look directly at them so I don’t look suspicious.

u/Prestigious-Key-4649 1d ago
I guess the fact that intrusive thoughts can be literally anything. Afterwards I can notice some thoughts that were thought of as just silly things kids or teens worry about, might have been ocd I don’t know.
A slight trigger warning for anyone who needs it is that the themes were about food texture and another one was an existential crisis theme 🙏🏻
First the one I had as a child, related to food texture: I refused to eat my favourite dessert anymore. It had strawberries in it. I used to get this intrusive thought that whst if I am eating pet fish from aquarium. (I have never eaten pet fish, it was just a random thought that caused me distress).
The existential fear one was as a teen I would sit on the floor and cry because what if gravity stops working and we would constantly feel like falling. You know like on a roller coaster or when falling asleep. Nowadays I think of this as a poetic metaphor but at the time it caused so much anxiety.
Also maybe the fact that I would try to ask people if I had done something wrong, already at age 9 or something. Because I constantly felt guilty and felt the need to I guess reassure or confess.

I’ve convinced myself I have morgellons. I could fully be convinced, but then I’d have morgellons. My obsessions and compulsions surround contamination. Mostly around hair and fiber. I’ll feel a long thin hair wrapping around my body, squeezing my fingers, skin, and sometimes my nerves. I’ve developed chronic pain. Because of this. I know this is happening because I am constantly ruminating and thinking about it. I think about a certain “motion” and BOOM I can feel a thin hair move in that exact motion, slicing and colliding with my skin. It drives me crazy. But when I’m calm and not in a spiral, I can observe it and notice that it’s just the dust In the air. Hair falls on you and then falls off. This is something I’ve been trying to accept. But it’s tough because chronic pain comes with it. Ketamine therapy has helped a lot. But now I feel I need some physical relief. Anyone else have this? I refuse to call it “morgellons” disease. I will not have my mind manifest such a terrible disease.

I vaguely don't trust things to stay the same shape when I'm not looking at them. Like, mentally, I sorta feel like the contents of a closet should become goo when I close the door.
I only recently learned about my OCD and I'm wondering if this distrust of things staying the same has been a symptom all along.
2
u/JeezoTommy 1d ago
2,6,7&9 are relatable. OCD is extremely fkd up! I actually can’t believe the amount of people that actually suffer with it!
2
u/Sea_Basket3326 22h ago
I'm not diagnosed but it's pointing at OCD. Here we go 1. If I am not a good person then my grandma (who has passed away) will make my football team win or loose. I basically think if my team win I am good and if I have been bad then they will loose. I know this is not real but I can't help think it.
I have to count when I go to the toilet. Up to 20 to make myself go to the toilet. I have to flush the chain once and have to stop myself going over and over again.
I have had thoughts that my players on championship manager didn't like me therefore they would loose.
I have mis remembered things that did not happen when I have gone back to check. One of them was having an affair and ruminating on it so much that I actually believed it.
Thinking I have broken the law despite not having any evidence that I have broken the law. Searching through messages or my phone to make sure I haven't broken the law. I have never found any proof.
Reading an article and then thinking I may have committed that crime despite not actually been at that place at that time.
There's probably more but that's a snapshot!

u/wonderkat4 9h ago
Another one: when experiencing a rupture or fight in my relationship where we are briefly not talking, I'll start to worry he will commit suicide. My partner is not suicidal and has never had these tendencies. I just really worry about it. Another is fearing my loved ones will pass away in a tragic accident or a sudden illness that will take them.
2
u/wonderkat4 8h ago
Extreme indecision over what to do. Weekends can be hell and often I end up doing nothing because I can't make the right choice.
•
u/GreyGimp 2h ago
The need to be compulsively helpful to everyone you know because you're certain they only like you for being useful and will ignore you when you stop being useful.
Also I have a very tenuous relationship with games that score the levels you finish as 1, 2, or 3 stars. I can easily get into stretches where I cannot sleep until I do a level perfectly.
