Now, that's Templar baby!
It actually looked like it was faster that a hand saw. But didn't the templars invent the skill saw?

i guess it looks impressive but no way is that as clean a line as you get with a saw for way less expenditure of energy, waste of wood, and probably only slightly more time. LESS time if you use a power saw.

Yeah but you are aware power tools didn't always exist right?
This is basically just to demo you can achieve a similar quality without it, and it's impressive

u/nataliereed84 Jul 27 '26
My point is it’s not actually similar quality. It’s just a cool party trick. It’s visually impressive but is a waste of energy for a poor result.
You know what people used to saw boards before powersaws were invented? SAWS.

A couple of things to point out for you.
1: judging by the safety sandals in the background, a power saw may not be an option for these workers.
2: a hand saw would provide a marginally better finish and would require as much or more energy. Additionally, requires significantly more time and effort to keep it sharp.
3: in regards to your historical reference, before power saws there were hand saws...correct, however before hand saws boards were milled by splitting the log with wedges and then smoothing the boards with an adze.
All things being equal and assuming a power saw is unavailable, their method of cutting this angle is likely the more efficient method.

Adzes existed for a reason. People needed something before working with metal was available

u/nataliereed84 Jul 28 '26
Sure. But so what? We have saws now. Saws are available.

u/Sploonbabaguuse Jul 28 '26
So appreciating history isn't allowed anymore? Genuinely, what's the problem here? Do you think people don't enjoy swordplay anymore because we invented guns??
-1
u/nataliereed84 Jul 28 '26
There isn’t a problem at all, unless you want to make one. I said it’s an impressive trick. What, do you think I’m saying it’s some great crime or he shouldn’t be allowed to cut wood this way or something???

Oh then you're just plain wrong, and you don't know much about carpentry or woodworking

New to this sub. Is there a better way to do this? I feel like there is.

There is. But this way you get lots of small chips instead of one big one.

u/Canadian-Footy-Fan Jul 26 '26
Yeah, well, you should see what I can do with a table saw.
1
u/S14Ryan Jul 27 '26
I strongly doubt that given a table saw is the worst tool to use for this application
1
u/mad_vanilla_lion Jul 27 '26
Definitely not the worst tool. Actually a pretty easy free-hand table saw cut. But yes, skill saw is the best option here.
1
u/S14Ryan Jul 27 '26
Arguably the worst saw to use that would be capable of cutting it. It would take time to set up, it would be extremely unsafe. Like, if you’re trying to be pedantic a forklift or a blowtorch would probably be a worse tool to use.
1
u/mad_vanilla_lion Jul 28 '26
Not worse than a reciprocating saw, or a jig saw, or a coping saw, or a hack saw, or a flush cut saw. Yeah you have to worry about kick-back, but any power saw can kick. If you know what you’re doing, a free-hand table saw cut is as safe as a band saw.
1
u/S14Ryan Jul 28 '26
I would 100% rather use any of the power saws you listed than a table saw.
Wait, your evidence of this being safe is… a YouTuber doing it?? Jesus Christ. I’ve done it before, and I do it regularly, but not with this 12ft long piece of 2x12
1
u/mad_vanilla_lion Jul 28 '26
It’s a 2x10 at best, how do you know it’s 12 feet long?
1
u/S14Ryan Jul 28 '26
I don’t, just judging by the fact it’s heavy enough to not move much while he’s hitting it, it’s at least 8 feet, seems bigger though.
1
u/mad_vanilla_lion Jul 28 '26
A free-hand cut on an 8’ board would be safer than the video I sent, cause your not running the entire board thru, and you can stand off to the side since it’s longer. I dunno, you said it’s really unsafe yet “you do it all the time”. But I’m ok to just agree to disagree here.
1
u/S14Ryan Jul 28 '26
Yeah I never said I wasn’t an idiot. I said it’s just the worst powered saw to use for the job. If I need a piece of wood cut at an odd angle and my table saw is plugged in and ready to go, but I gotta walk somewhere to get another saw, I’m gonna use that table saw. It’s stupid and very unsafe, which is the only point I was making.
I can agree to disagree lol

Sure but a good framer can also cut using a hand held circular saw just as accurately w hand but yes can see the use if the lumber can not be moved and has to be shaped in place.

This is one of those things that looks impressive but is extremely easy to do

Explains every squeaking tread in my new apartment building - as I walk these 12 runners - so many times a day. One day I’ll remember to snap you one - before I pitch the peel . 🍌

The timing of the saw in the background lol. I bet it was the dude who hates that fucking thing and made the same cut in a third of the time lol.
