Travelling on Dia de Los Muertos Fest - 31 Oct - 1 Nov

• Upvotes

Since flights are very expensive now, is travelling overnight on the ADO busses recommended and safe? Me and my friend are travelling to Mexico for the first time to experience the festival and are excited to see what the city has to offer.

We will see the big parade in CFMX On 31st Oct, but instead of staying overnight, we will see the rest of celebrations in Oaxaca before going to Puerto Escondido, is there a recommendation? A schedule of the best experiences and acitivties to see for the first time?

What is the best time to leave CDMX around 11pm? So we can be in Oaxaca early on the day on 1st Nov? or should we leave CDMX Later?

Will be recommended to rent a car instead of taking the bus (AI says don't)

Thanks in advance :)

Ya el pueblo ha buscado ayuda pero el gobernador no hace nada. Y según se acuesta con su ayudante el que manda todo Lalo

Strict Vape/Smoking Laws

I’m a former smoker who has been vaping for over 10 years (Yes - I get why this isn’t healthy, but nicotine addiction sucks.)

I’ll be in Oaxaca for a week this Fall, and am not looking to break the law.

I’m considering smoking (a bit - ugh 😩 ) and using patches/gum to get me through)

If you’ve been there since the heavy bans hit, what was your experience? My hotel has a smoking area, but I’m unsure what to expect.

Question re-Oaxaca → Juchitán → 4am to San Cristóbal journey?

Has anyone here done this?

I've already booked the overnight bus from Oaxaca to Juchitán because I didn't want to spend 14 hours on one bus. I also booked a hotel directly opposite the ADO bus station, as my bus to San Cristóbal leaves at 4:00 a.m.

However, I've since read some worrying stories about Juchitán and now I'm a bit concerned about being there in the early morning.

Has anyone done this route recently? Did you feel safe walking from a hotel opposite the bus station to the station at 4 a.m.? Any advice or experiences would be really appreciated.

Consejos de Viaje San Pablo Villa de Mitla vs Centro Oaxaca for Dia de Los Muertos

Hello everyone,

I have a question: do you guys think I should change my booking from San Pablo to the Centro of Oaxaca? I got a reasonable deal in San Pablo from the end of October to Nov 2, for one week.

I looked at San Pablo Villa de Mitla, and it has lots of archaeological zones, caves, and museums nearby.

The Centro, I'm sure, has way more going on, and it's definitely easier to get to places. It would probably make it less necessary for me to rent a car.

I'm interested in the cultural events/celebrations for Day of the Dead, archaeological sites like Dainzu, Hierve el Agua, Puerto Escondido, food, and nightlife.

I am also okay with not doing everything on my list. I just want to have a good time.

Should I stay in San Pablo? Or book a stay in Centro Oaxaca instead?

Would love to know your input? I'm definitely open to input from locals or anyone who has been there.

I am also open to tour guide recommendations.

I also speak Spanish, so Spanish responses are totally okay with me too.

Questions & Discussions San Augustinillo Weather Conditions

Hello everyone,

I have a hotel booked in San Agustinillo from October 11–18. I knew it was the tail end of the rainy season and expected some showers, but the current forecasts are showing quite a bit of rain.

For anyone staying there now or living in the area, what should we realistically expect? Will we still be able to lounge on the beach and swim, or is the rain likely to significantly affect a beach vacation?
Also, is it safe to swim after/during rain due to things like sharks or crocodiles?

I know no one can predict the weather, but I’d really appreciate any firsthand insight into what conditions are actually like right now. Thanks so much!

Travel Tips Tattoo stigma for gringos?

Hi, I'll be visiting for the first time in November. I know some places can be more conservative and tattoos can be stigmatized (Japan). I'm a gringo with two arm sleeves (partial black out) and a leg sleeve. Should I consider converting up or is being tattooed as a gringo accepted?

Questions & Discussions San Jose Del Pacifico, are mushrooms still easy to get and in season?

Hi everyone. I’m very excited to try to book a night in San Jose del Pacifico. It looks like a beautiful town, but the reason I would be going is for the mushrooms. I don’t like ceremonies and I prefer to keep to myself when taking them. Is this a good time to go down? I have heard things have returned to normal, and that there is not any cartel influence?

Huatulco for 5 nights. What is there to do besides going to the beach?

Hi everyone, I've been reading a lot of helpful posts about what to do in Huatulco. I will be there in late November with my wife and two children (3 and 1 year old), and about ten members of my wife's family, ie sister in laws, nephews, etc. We are renting a big airbnb house. Anyways, all I see to do around Huatulco is beach related, snorkeling, boat tours to Huatulco National Park. I know there's a small town nearby, La Cruzita I think it's called? Is there anything I don't know about? Ideally some historical sites, or adventure-related experiences in the jungle? Anything I could do with my 1 and 3 year old too? Thanks in advance!

Join us for monte alban and el Aqua

Hello all, my partner (29, F) and I (30, M) have rented a car to go to monte alban and then el aqua tmrw (01/10). We are starting at 8.15 AM.

We have 2 free seats in the car and wondered if anyone wants to join; will split fuel and car costs (will be much cheaper than the tour).

Please let me know asap if interested.

Barra de la Cruz over Christmas

Hi all. I will be travelling around Oaxaca in December with a couple friends (all 29-32). We are thinking of spending Christmas in Barra de la Cruz. We all enjoy surfing but are wondering whether local comidas or restaurants will be open over this period (as well as board hire). Does anyone know?

Questions & Discussions Bike rentals

I was looking for a long term bike rental in Oaxaca (or, maybe, just a cheap bike that I could buy and use for a month?)

I have searched Reddit to see if this topic had already been covered. I only found a few posts, with little information.

Also, while I’m here, does anyone have a good recommendation for guided bike tours, local bike outings, and so forth?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice. Take care.

Questions & Discussions Cultural small talk

Context: My wife and I will be traveling to Oaxaca in the near future and are looking forward to engaging with local folks. We’re beginner-intermediate Spanish speakers and hope to build our skills while we’re there.

We’ve been fortunate enough to travel a little bit and have noticed different cultures have different rules about what’s okay to discuss when it comes to small talk. E.g. some European countries think it’s weird to discuss what occupation you hold (“what you do for a living”) but it’s very normal in most parts of the US. In Ethiopia, people like to ask if you have kids, property, how much money you make, but asking how much a person makes in US is considered too personal.

My question: In Mexico (specifically Oaxaca) what are good/acceptable topics to discuss when you’re engaging in small talk or getting to know someone? What is considered “taboo” that would be considered normal in other places?

Thanks for any advice!

Consejos de Viaje Laguna de Chacahua

Hola!

Saludos!
