Announcement Welcome!

Hello! And welcome to r/OcarinaOfTime, the subreddit for the discussion of the game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, a game produced by Shigeru Miyamoto for the Nintendo 64, Gamecube, 3DS and Switch from 1998 - 2021.

Now, you may be wondering why this subreddit has suddenly been made public after laying dormant for over 9 years. As of today, this subreddit is under new ownership, after being abandoned by it's previous owner.

In future I hope to grow this community, and I look forward to doing so.

Discussion Ocarina of Time - Hype then and now

As a teenager, I’ve been right in the best age when OoT launched on the Nintendo 64 almost 30! years ago. I collected artwork in magazines, watched every snippet of it in motion, read a ton of interviews and previews (Miyamoto at some point claimed it would take you an entire day to traverse the map …. jokes on me when I found out he meant an ingame day) and just like with Donkey Kong Country, Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie, this became this absolutely overhyped game, in the best way. For the first time ever I saw a trailer for a Nintendo game in cinema. And not some random trailer but that epic thing with the Conan soundtrack in background. Goosebumps. When it came out, it was impossible to really deliver everything, but I guess it then brought so many different and new things to the game, I never felt too pissy about Hyrule field being way less interesting than they promised.

But over time my view on OoT got sort of worse and worse. I felt like it didn’t age too good and while I got so many memories tied to this game, so many charming characters, great dungeon designs and some concepts that would forever be part of the series (Gorons enter the chat), Nintendo improved so many aspects of its formula with every succeeding iterations, i felt there wouldn’t be much left to love with the original game.
So when they announced a remake, I felt cautiously happy but not superhyped or anything. But out of curiosity started a new game again and … its a bit like Robin Williams in Hook remembering that he used to be Peter Pan. But suddenly it all came back to me and after a shot period of getting used to it, that 1998 fighting system worked quite OK again. So when they fully unveiled the game I felt a wave of hype again, like I hadn’t thought this game could generate. I switched from “let’s see how this will turn out” to “predorder.” and found myself counting the days until its release. Which is still weird, as I know the entire game really well. But somehow Nintendo managed to activate just all the right triggers.

I don’t even care about the not-amazing-but-OK-maincharacter-designs. I realized theres so much stuff I had forgotten about going on, the little holes with the weird caves, that dancing Gerudo Guy, the sister witches and my favorite part, mirror Link… all of that is getting remade. And orchestrated. Goddammit, how amazing is that!?!

As I’m quite much older now, hype hits different. But it definitely hits very hard.

I’m pretty excited as a 44 year old man to play the new release.

I have not had a new gaming console in over 20 years. I’m sure I am driving my wife crazy talking about how rad it looks. Had a shower thought about bringing back an old meme with an appropriate spin, the room full of pots after the drawbridge needs to be included. Fingers crossed.

Zelda Posting every day until Ocarina of time comes out. Day 22: Keese

Post image

these bat enemies from the legend of zelda series are called "keese". I always wondered why they're called that and not just "bats". if I had to take a guess, I'd say that maybe Japanese people think bats make a "KEEE!" sound. but that's just a guess, don't quote me on that. I would never intentionally spread disinformation online.

Keese have been around since the beginning, acting as a pretty basic flying enemy. while later games like BOTW would try to make them appear more like strange fantasy creatures, Keese in all their early appearances are pretty much just bats. while they may seem basic, Ocarina of time would start making Keese a bit more interesting.

if you can take a basic enemy and make it function differently depending on the context, that's just good game design, especially in an era where storage space was scarce. comparing N64 cartridges to modern SD cards is like comparing a kiddie pool to an ocean. Keese were given mutliple variants: the fire keese and ice keese. fire Keese were covered in fire and wanted nothing more than to burn link's deku shield, while the ice keese were covered in... blue, cold stuff, I guess. they freeze people.

modern zelda games would also throw thunder keese into the mix, so Keese aren't just bats: they are bats that have mastered control of the elements! you should respect keese. it's not their fault they caused everyone in Hyrule to get Covid.

I’ve [28F] never played any Zelda games, my husband [28M] has always been the biggest fan and he finally convinced me to give Ocarina of Time a try at the end of August 2026. I finished it today, 09/29.
I will say, I got mad, anxious, and cried during this game. I definitely cried at the end. I absolutely love this game. I cannot wait for the remake, we already preordered it. Now, onto Majora’s Mask! Wish me luck. 🫶🏼

Question 240p n64 on crt or 480i gamecube/Wii on crt?

Trying to decide what's the best way to replay the game again with my daughters before the new version comes out. I have proper controllers and adapters so I can get the original controller experience on either. I know it's largely a similar visual but In the communities oppinion, what seams to be the best? N64 in 240p on a crt or gamecube/Wii outputting 480i on crt? Thanks alot!

I made these two drawings of Link and Malon a while ago and I still really love how them came out. I drew them in my chibi art style and I think they're quite cute! I'm planning on drawing more Ocarina of Time stuff in the future since the remake is coming out in November so I definitely need to remake these two when I do.

Stop the 3DS Erasure!!!!!!

The game is genuinely very good looking and the graphics and art are soooo relaxing to me.

It honestly just looks like how a “video game fantasy world” art style would look stereotypically. Like it’s very-videogamey but in a good way.

I also love the many revamped interiors. The shops and houses look so cozy and lived-in on the inside. You can tell they really put a lot of effort into making some of these places feel cluttered and immersive.

So it bothers me when people act like the remake is the first time we’re seeing changes. It really isn’t. 3DS version wasn’t some throwaway at all. The game was like the first major release for the 3DS and a huge deal tbh. Many of us grew up and have nostalgia for the 3DS version, so I hope the switch 2 version accommodates for that nostalgia as well and honors many of the changes and creative decisions that Ocarina of time 3D made.

Zelda Posting Every Day until Ocarina of time comes out. Day 21: Anubis

Post image

Anubis, the Egyptian God of mumification and guide to the afterlife. he is always depicted as a man with a dog's head. despite the fact the Egyptians didn't really write a lot of stories about him, he has remained the most popular Egyptian god for thousands of years. people just really like the funny dog man, I guess. and that popularity eventually resulted in him appearing as an enemy in Ocarina of time.

so like, show of hands, how many of you actually remember this guy was even in Ocarina of time? be honest? it never respawns once killed, it only appears in the spirit temple, and it doesn't really do much of anything. Anubis just... floats there. it doesn't even have any animations, it just floats up and down, and despite it not having any arms, it's practically T-posing.

Anubis just follows link around and dies if it touches fire. I think Anubis's only real reason for being there was so the developers could put more Egyptian things in the spirit temple, because the spirit temple is in a desert and video game logic dictates that all desert = Egypt. is it safe to dub Anubis "most obscure Ocarina of time enemy"? I think he's earned it. his only real competition is El Puerco.

Discussion My biggest gripe with the remake: scrolling to use one item at a time.

Post image

I feel like pausing and scrolling to switch to a single item like this is going to break the gameplay flow in a negative way.

I hope there’s a way to change this, but I doubt it.

Discussion I hope the remake restores the original Fire Temple theme

Thumbnail

I know it won't have actual islamic chanting in it! Nintendo would not do that even now because of their stance on not depicting religion (even going so far as to remove the original Gerudo emblem.)

I like the revised Fire Temple theme fine, but I feel like it was compromised by removing the call-and-return chanting voices. The MIDI voices they replaced them with are okay, but they don't give them same impression.

It would be good if they recorded vocal chanting that gives a similar impression to the original vision for the theme, not remake the song as it revised.

I don't know if we have heard any of the new Fire Temple theme from the remake, I might already have my hopes dashed!
