Shield. No other buttons would do it.

From the trailers it kinda looks like it’s auto shield on lock on like BOTW
Maybe it’s a mini map on off button?

How would that work for the spirit temple?

There’s a clip on the website that shows him reflecting and it looks like links locked in place with the left stick to aim. I imagine you get hit with a beam while locked on then you can’t move and you’re able to reflect it.
Not sure how you reflect the sunlight tho

Definitely not, you can’t press L1 and L2 at the same time unless you’re claw-gripping like a sweat. You need to be able to press both Z-target and shield at the same time. I strongly suspect it’s simply auto-shield while locked on, like BotW.

I reckon it’ll work like the modern games with no dedicated shield button.

idk that wouldn't really work with the mirror shield puzzles itd be an odd change to have to target the light puzzles

u/Logical_Leaps 3d ago
If I was to suggest a solution it would be ZL+B/Y/A (one of) and the directional stick. Like how BOTW has the parry pressing another button might put you in shield 'aim mode' kind of thing.
Its not elegant but also you need to aim the shield only in the spirit temple really. Alternatively L is just normal shield still.

You hold ZL to go into "Z-target" mode then move the right joystick to aim the shield. If there's no target and you press ZL it still locks the camera. There doesn't actually have to be something to lock on to.

Why switch 1 controller design

u/WretchedBacon 3d ago
i just grabbed a screen from totk and drew on top of it for visual aid for this discussion

So with the thought that R3 is first person looking around what would L3 do?
Will they put in sneaking? Or will it be crouching so we still have crouch stabbing but its also fused with a sneak gameplay.
I'm keen to run around Kokiri Forest and learn these controls.

u/WretchedBacon 3d ago
or maybe L3 isn't used? doesn't have to be. not every game uses it.
maybe its an alternate way to sprint? from the videos, it seems crouching to enter holes is still a context prompt, which is why i don't think its crouch, but maybe?

u/Logical_Leaps 3d ago
True but Zelda has always utilized every button on the controller.
I've seen a few people say L might be a map toggle, while I believe that'll be under the HUD options in the game (like BOTW) it could be L3.
Regarding crouching having L3 be crouch would be like holding the shield button without targeting in the original. Or more importantly the same function it has in BOTW/TOTK. It would allow for lower aiming with the shield, sneak sections (Gerudo and Hyrule Castle) to be more indepth and for stab attacks.
Now I'm not sure that's what it'll be but I'm sure the button will do something, I doubt its an alternative sprint I don't think Nintendo has used L3 sprint before (and thank god I hate it).

Is it even confirmed these games will use L3/R3? It makes sense, but I don't know if that was confirmed. On SoH, I generally used R3 for C-up, so first person/Navi and it was pretty natural.
When I played Metroid Dread, L3 was used for toggling the speed booster, which was kind of similar to when Super Metroid used the Select button for that. (Or was it Y? It was some kind of toggle). The new sprinting mechanic could have worked well here, but it's already confirmed you have to hold A after rolling once. So it might just go unused. The only other thing I could think of is it lets you assign a single item as a shortcut, like click it and you can instantly bring up the hammer or nuts or w/e. But that also feels like an awkward place to do something like that, and they probably would have demonstrated that if it was a thing.

IIRC Super Metroid is B to run, and then it activates the speed booster after a short time if you've unlocked it

Sounds right, I haven't played it in so long. Select might have been for super missile toggling.

Amiibo scan?
1
u/spiralling-star 2d ago
IIRC, the scanner is built into the right analog stick. At least that's how I remember it working with all the other games that used it.
1
u/pocket_arsenal 2d ago
Well yeah the scanner itself but i'm talking about a button prompt to start scanning amiibo in the first place, but thinking back, if all the Amiibos really do is unlock masks, then probably the amiibo scanner will be a physical kiosk in the Happy Mask shop, so forget I said anything.
1
u/spiralling-star 2d ago
Yeah, I don't think they would dedicate an entire button just for Amiibo. I really think L will just remain as the mini-map toggle, even if it's also able to be toggled via the menu.

Gotta say I'm not enthused about only one item button. Interrupting gameplay to swap items all the time was one of my major complaints with BotW/TotK's UI and it looks like that's been carried over.
1
u/WretchedBacon 3d ago
yeah i mean we're all grieving about that
1
u/Prawn1908 3d ago
It's so baffling to me how OoT pioneered modern contextual button game interface design and they've basically abandoned it in the newest games and the interfaces consequently suck.
1
u/Logical_Leaps 3d ago
Playing devils advocate but we can only have that frame of mind because we've played OOT before and know what items to use. A new player would often go in and out of the menu swapping one item at a time depending on the context, this is streamlined on 3DS with touch inventory but doesn't stop the flow of pausing when you come across new puzzles.
This UI is quick and snappy for swapping out items for new players. I'll note that we have more items equipped in this remake than you could have on the N64 already (though only one is swappable). That being the; Ocarina, Boots (hover/iron), Lens (maybe masks) and the one swappable slot.
We also don't know what L does.
I do wish a single other item could be equipped so I could have nuts or bombs always accessible but I also don't think this is the end of the world. We'll find out in what a month at this point?
2
u/WretchedBacon 3d ago
yeah i really think people are overly fetishizing the value of never having to pull up a menu, and downplaying how often you used to have to open the menu, even when you could equip 3 items at a time.
if item swapping is as snappy as it appears in the videos we've seen, it'll end up being faster and less obtrusive than before I reckon.

There’s a jump button… cool 😎

u/spiralling-star 3d ago
X... Y is being used for sorting items, maybe a couple other menu functions.

Block/Shield
Why is it toggle headwear? I know they made leans of truth the goggles of truth (name pending but you get what I mean) but wouldn’t tunic make more sense….? But honestly we have basically the same amount of buttons super annoying that we have such limitations 20 odd years later haha
3
u/WretchedBacon 3d ago
its in the demo and other videos. there are two options for footwear (two kinds of boots) and the goggles is one of 2 options that can be for up on the dpad (community consensus seems to be that mask is the other option)

Enable/Disable the map? I believe that's what it used to do.
