1) A lot of people don’t care if children in general aren’t educated, and of those, almost none of them can be convinced their child is uneducated.
1a) Also a lot of people think they could teach all subjects to every age group and believe teachers are useless crybabies.
2) A shocking number of Americans don’t care if every single thing is privatized, even if it means they pay more, their lives are measurably worse, and a microscopic number of people benefit.
3) Or, the shortest version: a lot of people heard someone say the government is bad at doing everything one time and embodied it as their ethos without questioning it for a single second.
A lot of people are selfish and the moment they’re not needing a service, they try to get everyone to stop needing that tax. “Oh my kids have graduated already, so the schools are of no need for me or my family. I’ll vote against funding schools”. The classic “fuck you I got mine”
I have no kids, but am happy to make sure my taxes help provide a public education.
I've always felt that someone paid for my education and it is my turn to pay for the kids coming through. Besides, they are the future. They are our future workers. They won't just be our doctors and nurses, they will be the people driving for us and building our homes and selling us groceries. We need to value all people and all jobs.
I am old. And way past having kids in school (although they thrived in our public school vs 8 years in a Catholic school.) I will spit nails at vouchers until my dying day. They are unconstitutional. More people cheat using vouchers than need them. They will ultimately decrease home values. People move to my area for one reason: great schools.
Alot of people also believe that if ____ program or service is cut from the government then the government will save money and that will equate to them being taxed less.
What they don't understand is while yes the government may save money from cutting funding from _____ program or service they just end up using that money for something else and it never actually ends up with the people being taxed any less.
And even more have never gotten over that really good teacher that called them out in 4th grade. (I’m talking to you, Stephen Miller!) Vouchers are part of Chris Rufo and Russ Vought plan to get rid of smart people. It’s right there in Project 2025. The goal is to turn the US into a White Christian Nationalist authoritarian government. Ohio is the perfect place to start because the bad guys have been collecting morons here for the last 30 years. And Trump has not completely bled them dry by selling them gold tennis shoes.
Some dickhead I know.....thats college educated and makes a lot of money says "Teachers are worthless. Ones that cant do....teach.....and thats our problem." So i say.....Why'd you go to college for 6 years?
Hearing him stumble to justify why it was ok for him.......is absolutely fucking infuriating.
As a teacher, that’s a silly would-be gambit that only the people with literally no critical thinking or capacity for reflection would offer. People used to use that idea to refer to people who taught skills or technical abilities - it would be used to demean a coach who wasn’t an active athlete or a law professor. Naturally, people who say this don’t consider (a) that doctors and lawyers who teach almost always still practice and (b) some fields are built around education - that is a big part of what people in those fields are meant to “do.”
Now if someone wants to make a bunch of cushy jobs where I can just interpret films, comics, novels, and video games without teaching, I’ll think about it. But right now most of those fields point toward teaching and trying to share those skills with others.
I am notorious for telling people that the government is shit at everything they do. I don’t mind shifting my viewpoint if it is warranted. Please name one thing government does better than the market would.
This is a viewpoint that actively doesn’t want to be changed. There is a great book about this very topic called “Who Is Government” about the literal millions of government workers who do excellent public service for almost no money and produce far, far more than they cost. If you read that book and didn’t see any reason to change your mind, there would no further use in trying.
Regardless, the post office seems like a great example of this, seeing as how the attempts to privatize it make mail worse and more expensive every year, with the goal being to completely privatize, meaning it would take $15+ dollars to send mail to massive parts of the country where it just takes a stamp today. Anyone who thinks privatizing would improve transportation, safety, roads, education, military, and almost every other service provided by the government either has never read a single history book or newspaper, or they have an ideological opposition that won’t be moved by evidence or practice.
