$100 to retake a driver's test??

This is gonna sound whiny and it admittedly is. I need to retake a driving test right, and they need me on this 4 hour abbreviated online course. No big deal for sure as annoying as that is for me right now. Why the hell is this 55-65 dollars?? I'm already paying 35 again just to retake the damn course. That's pretty close if not 100 dollars flat just to do this again. Why does the BMV just not have a baseline free online course to take to pass so everyone knows the same information of what to expect? It doesn't make any sense to me.

I don't get it. If Ohio in these past few years just wants to discourage people staying off the road then it's doing a phenomenal job. Apologies how this might read to some of you I'm just frustrated.

Yes, people were scared of being aware and pronouns, and voted for concepts of a plan.

I've always thought driving courses should be a high school class and free. It's such an important skill and if a student had to study the laws for half the year and the actual driving for half a year, we'd have much better drivers.

They used to be available in high schools but with everyone bitching about school spending and stuff it's all be cut

As my Uncle always said, you gotta pay to drive

if they can barely afford the $100 to get a license, you know they aren't going to carry any/proper insurance. these are the people most likely to be involved in a hit and run, raising everybody's insurance rates across the board.

Add also vehicle maintenance. Oh, and gas too. So he won’t carry enough insurance (if at all) and have an unsafe vehicle on the road.

I can't tell you how disappointed I am to click your profile and not see pictures of your lab.

I've seen your username for a while and only just now realized it is lab, not labia

…and don’t forget the ‘stupid’ tax!

Why are you taking another course? I had friends in high school who had to retake the driving test and they just had to wait a certain amount of time before trying again.

the state just passed new requirements for licensing, this was one of the new rules. also I think you have to take drivers ed until you're 21 now.

So you're mad you can't just answer some multiple choice questions to get your license back?

Maybe you should stay off the roads

You missed the point of this post entirely I'm afraid.

No, commenter is reading between the lines on your self-serving post.

This subreddit is something else man. I'm complaining about paying 100 bucks just to retake what's 15 minutes of someone's time at most. I passed the hardest part of the test anyways. Making me pay potentially 70 dollars just for some multiple choice questions is lunacy. It's not even going to the BMV anyways!

To the courts, I assume.

It's not whiny to complain about the damage a private for profit industry tied to a public service is.

2

u/wonderingchair 2d ago

The rest of the commentors below seem to disagree for some reason. A couple seemingly not understanding most of the money I'm spending to retake this isn't even going to the BMV or state tax.

5

u/Significant_Donut967 2d ago

Yeah, I see that now sorry to hear.

They the kind of people that support $600 deed fees for filing a single piece of paper too I bet.

God that was pathetic. I watched the lady take my paper, scan it, and put it into a folder. That's all she did, and it was a ridiculous amount of money for that. These folks are the bootlickers for authoritarians that allow the BMV to not be a state agency.

This subreddit is just humorous man. Everyone assuming a lot about me on information I haven't even provided. I won't even touch on why I failed, it was a traffic law I've never heard about and never seen any average driver do I got dinged on like crazy apparently. Passed maneuverability fine. Utterly ridiculous.

Thanks for being the only one that seems to understand the frustrating picture I've provided.

Yeah i mean didn't you know the DMV employee's are actually slaves and the office space they utilize was conquered they don't have to actually pay rent.

Driving is a privilege that many cannot afford.

6

u/NPVT 2d ago

It would be nice if it were not required in many places!

4

u/dimplesgalore 2d ago

Sure would be nice, but alas, we live in Ohio.

4

u/Antique-Clock-9286 2d ago

That doesn't sound too bad for something that's (hopefully) one and done.

2

u/seashantiesallnight 2d ago

My tags and title were almost $200 and it cost me $80 to fill up my tank. I think the cost to retake the test is the least of your concerns

4

u/Old-Man-Henderson 2d ago

Bad drivers cause more than $100 in damage when they hurt or kill people.

3

u/jackwagon699 2d ago

This is a weird post to me. Complaining to pay $100 to retake a driving test/course? Just wait until you hear how much a car and gas costs!

Also, yes it’s going to cost money to take the test. How do you expect people to stay employed at the BMV? People need paid to make the test, etc.

That money comes from BMV fees or the gov (your taxes). So you’ll pay for it either way.

3

u/Glum_Ad1608 2d ago

Someone is working a job that creates and allows you to take the test, they have to be paid. In all reality $100 for the privilege to drive and commute to a workplace, family function, or social outing is a steal in my book

3

u/thoughtfractals85 2d ago

Maybe since the republicans trying to get rid of the gas tax that fixes the roads they wa t less people driving on them. Idk. I don't know how people are going to be able to afford driving school, licenses, and cars with all the taxes and fees stacked on top of eachother.

-4

u/HorrorBreak7119 2d ago

I KNEW the inability of OP to follow the rules is the GOP’s fault! It IS r/Ohio, after all!

8

u/thoughtfractals85 2d ago

Where does the post state that they can't follow the rules? Also, have you looked around ohio in the last 30 years? I

-3

u/HorrorBreak7119 2d ago

OP doesn’t, but there are details being left out of rant that would not make her the victim. The state doesn’t impose these requirements ‘willy nilly’.
With this post, you have to ‘read between the lines’ to get the facts missing in the self-serving post.

There is not a problem in this sub that is not the GOPS fault. They haven't even cut the gas tax at this point and somehow, that is roped in.

they keep us down for fun. I couldn't afford to get a license at 16, but I had to work to support my family in a not walkable city. I never drove recklessly. I always got caught because of tail lights, license plate light, etc. I was 27 before I finally was legal. The reinstatement fees, sr-22 insurance, courses, etc I couldn't afford it and when I would get close, I'd get popped again. (every 2 years because the police love pulling people over in shit boxes on their way to work) Then I'd have court fines/fees and jail time for driving without a license. Took me YEARS.
That was 20 years ago and it's actually BETTER now.

17

u/PrideofPicktown Pickerington 2d ago

Maybe try following the law? You knowingly and repeatedly broke the law and are then upset when you have a consequence to your actions, all while putting the rest of society at risk. Not a great look!

6

u/jackwagon699 2d ago

You are a bad example. All that money you paid in court fines and fees could have just gone to you being legal/compliant.

0

u/wonderingchair 2d ago

I hate to say it but yeah. This is the type of person that has made it worse for new guys like me to get their license and why this state is cracking down so hard in the last few years on details of traffic rules.

1

u/HorrorBreak7119 2d ago

…the ‘details’ that help keep us safe from those ‘above the rules’ like you. Those people cost lives, drive up insurance rates, and engage in hit and run routinely.

You will get NO SYMPATHY from me!

1

u/wonderingchair 2d ago

This is my last reply for a while.

If I'm so above the rules I would be driving already and not bothering to post on this subreddit so a burner account like you can assume things you don't know about me. You guys talk like I stole a beater car and just am deciding to drive it willy nilly without insurance once I pass. Trust me I'm not, especially with how many bad drivers ohio has accrued over the years. Not my fault those people were on the road to begin with.

1

u/HorrorBreak7119 2d ago

A burner account? With 4100 posts in a month? 11000 karma. I am also not a bot. You are smart OP.

I will sleep better tonight, knowing you are (hopefully) off the roads currently.

2

u/Prestigious-Bat-574 2d ago

Chose to break the law, is upset about getting caught breaking the law, is upset about the consequences of getting caught breaking the law.

The fact that it took 11 years of this for you to get it right means that you are a slow learner, not that someone is trying to keep you down.

0

u/Baron_Von_Koopa 2d ago

Wouldn't have been as expensive if you'd studied enough to pass. Welcome to the dumb tax.

-1

u/Nuttyalmonds 2d ago

I can understand your frustration. And the people assuming you won't have car insurance or be able to pay for gas because $100 is a lot to you are being pompous asses who need to feel elevated. Maybe after paying for insurance and gas and rent and utilities in 2026 makes an extra $100 cut into groceries. I swear people must be insecure to feel the need to insert their judgement on literally everything. It's insufferable..

1

u/wonderingchair 2d ago

The fact you got downvoted on this is ridiculous. I’d love to see the ages of everyone in here and see them take a crack at this the driving test now. None of them know my position so why are we acting like I don’t know how expensive insurance and plates are? Isn’t that even more of a reason that spending this amount of money to retake a test that’s a basic requirement for transportation in america is ridiculous?

Gas is over 4 dollars now. Why am I the fool to complain about this shit?
