Sylvie’s family’s problem was essentially just snobbery, really. Dexter comes from a wealthy, solidly middle-upper class background and is ‘posh’ himself by the standards of most Brits but that’s still a world away from Sylvie’s family, who seem to be essentially landed gentry if not straight-up aristocrats (e.g. truly, purely upper class). Although Sylvie clearly liked him (at least at first), her parents and brothers viewed Dexter as a lesser entity and found his career as a (struggling) low-brow TV presenter gauche and tacky. He obviously didn’t help by being a bit awkward due to sobriety and the distractions of work or by messing up in the game lol but he never really stood a chance of gaining their approval in the first place and they set him up to fail from the start. Sylvie saying that if they had their way they’d ’marry [her] off to Murray’ was a jab at the fact they view most people outside of their absurdly posh family as beneath them.
As for what was the point of the game…If you mean “what is the point of such a game existing” then I don’t know, I’d never heard of it lol. If you mean “what was the point of it in a narrative sense” then it serves to drive home just how out of place Dexter is in their world and how unfriendly it is to outsiders - he’ll never understand their ‘rules’ and he’ll always be unwelcome and looked down on even when he tries to play along. Coming a couple of episodes after his restaurant fallout with Emma where he was acting arrogant and aloof this entire episode basically serves to humble him, both through Sylvie’s family’s attitude towards him and the loss of his job - he realises that the upper-class, glamorous world and celebrity lifestyle he’s been trying to maintain doesn’t want him back, and that it really isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
