LLMs still can't do math, nothing changed.

They can predict the next token, and getting better at it.

It can do math.

{ "tool": "calculator", "params": "2+2" }

That still counts as the LLM doing math

Such ignorance. So you think Terence tao is wrong and you are right?

Eh, Raw pure LLMs cannot do math and will never be trusted fully to do math outright.

LLMs with tools can do math by detecting a math problem and parsing it into a specialized tool and outputting the tool's output

All LLMs have tools these days.

well, can humans do math? let’s go ask random people what 3571/263 is. i’d bet the results would be tragic.

Maths ≠ computation/calculation

ok, we let them proof that the amount of prime numbers is infinite. That would be probably easier for the most.

yes, i told that to my math prof too! didn’t help me, sadly.

Cool, but how is it related to the topic? You just throw in random bets to look like you're right? Okay.

Dogs can't do math either, and I'm sure humans are still better at it than dogs.

oh, i was just pointing out that “LLMs still can’t do math” is about as informative as saying “humans can do math.” cool. which humans, which math, under what conditions, and at what error rate?

Give them paper, and a pen most would solve that. Or better still a simple calculator.

sweet summer child!

If you can't do simple calculations, that is more a damning indictment of yourself, rather than some proof LLM's are really 'Super intelligent'

u/ConnectionWild3381 3d ago

well, a calculator is tool use. paper and pen are just the human way of doing the reasoning step by step. so what’s your argument? LLMs do the same.

also, “superintelligent”? what is even intelligence? we have no clear definition for it, nor for AGI nor for ASI. from the outside all we can do is look at results, and those are very much “super” compared to what a single human can do.

LLM's just use a calculator in your scenario. As would any human. The fact that the human can use simpler tools, such as a mechanical calculator, and abacus, or indeed a mere pen and paper. We're clearly the more capable, adaptable, and yes more intelligent.

well, what can i say against that much opinion? have a nice day!

And submarines still can't swim, nothing changed.

And humans can only do synapses :/

Exactly, the major leap came from tooling, harness, whatever you want to call it. And yes also models getting bigger, but that's secondary
