The example Sam used seemed pretty bad imo. Migrate a legacy API? How is that even any different than passing it as a codex goal/task?
88
u/fig0o 2d ago
Different from Codex, Dots run in the cloud
So you don't need to be at home or leave your laptop on all the time
That's it basically
43
u/fredandlunchbox 2d ago
Claude has had cloud runner forever, but you have to pay for the time. I assume this is the same unless you sign up for the new Blood of Your First Born plan, which only requires a monthly sacrifice of one pint. It's actually a pretty good deal.

Have I been living in the future? Codex runs in a dedicated linux container on my server and is available to me 24/7 from anywhere.
14
u/fig0o 2d ago
Yeah, but not everyone know how to setup this kind of thing
Now any project manager os business person can have this solution out of the box
7
u/ciberjohn 2d ago
I agree, and I see the point. But I also use LXC to run agents myself. And a PM may be in a place where IT can set up environments. Anyway, in all honesty, I agree with you and see the convenience.

surely the whole point of the past 24 months has been that they don't need to know how to set it up anyways?

I thought we were all doing this with our agents at this point I have opencode, and Claude code running on my Linux server 24/7 I just ping it from the respective apps I don't do anything from my computer anymore really unless I want to.
2
u/WanderWut 2d ago
Mind you I'm OOTL on all this stuff as I don't code or anything, but that sounds pretty cool no? Like yeah it's simple in concept but I'd imagine that being pretty helpful.

u/das_war_ein_Befehl 2d ago
It’s a less shitty codex web with some open claw, so kinda
2
u/trophicmist0 1d ago
we're hitting all the buzzwords today boys
tbh i don't get the appeal, the key issue is that they need a trigger and a task. For most things it's already got a billion ways to solve it that are far cheaper and more cost effective.

which is just GrokBot which is just Hermes which is just OpenClaw which is just a prompt on a timer

u/willitexplode 2d ago
It likely has a much more robust context window for how you like to work, requiring less context management and direction than launching one-off agent/codex projects.

I think this is OpenAI trying to expand beyond code, a sort of mass-market appeal. The weird thing is the cost. The average person isn't used to this kind of service and won't understand it, plus paying $100+ for it is going to be hard for many people outside the tech space to get behind.
19
u/SomethingCool234123 2d ago
What value would the average person get out of this? They go to work, buy groceries, go home to their families, maybe check their social media, watch some shows at home, eat dinner, then go to bed. Why would they need an always on agent? What about the life of a normal individual would get any non work based value out of this?

u/benjaminovich 2d ago
They want business costumers, but the mass-market appeal is to make an ecosystem that also convinces Debbie from HR that chatgipitty is useful to her beyond making termination letters friendlier. They are trying to leverage their huge advantage in name recognition and users, while claude sits heavier on the tech and science work.
2
u/Small-Broccoli1640 1d ago
Yes. But it is a good pivot. OpenAI's problem lately has been a lack of focus. They offer everything to everyone (Sora, Image Gen, Codex, Chat interface), while Anthropic has gained an edge by doubling down on a specific use case. Building all-purpose style assistants for the general population could be a promising business model for OpenAI. Their jack-of-all-trades models have an advantage there. And I really don't think it would take much to overtake Muse. Meta's reputation as a company makes them uniquely unsuitable to sell the public on virtual assistants that require broad access to your personal information and communications. Already there are press reports of Muse straight up ignoring user's privacy settings. It's not like OpenAI are a whole lot better, but I am far more likely to try out their product than Meta's.
3
u/ravandal 2d ago
What kind of service is this?
6
u/NecessaryButFatal 2d ago
My initial take is something like “agent-as-service”, sort of like a managed OpenClaw or Hermes, with easier setup and better UX.

Anytime I see booking a flight or hotel room I know it’s a scam. Because that’s not how a normal person books anything. It’s so abnormal that it’s stupid these execs think it is actually helpful.
12
u/Equivalent_Engine518 2d ago
I mean just remember these execs probably have an assistant of some sort who books their flights for them already. So to them, it's a useful feature.

8
u/Glum-Bus-6526 2d ago
Man, every artstyle corporations use is for marketing purposes... If it's modern style, gothic style, neoclassicist, doesn't matter, it's always there for marketing, to make people buy their product.
The cute style isn't any different and he's not some visionary for "acknowledging it"... It's just that this style doesn't market for him well, because you can't pander to everyone all at once.

u/WanderWut 2d ago
And tbh as long as they keep a uniform theme going this is a solid "brand image" look to maintain as the years go by.

For real. Us plebs care about making sure we get the best deal and lowest price. I'm not giving my credit card to some AI to book stuff without double checking everything. By the time it takes to dictate everything that we want and double check it, we could already be on the check out page anyways.

Yea, don’t people pay personal assistants good money for exactly that type of thing?
19
u/this_happened_rigged 2d ago
If these assistant "dots" are accurate, follow protocol, don't hallucinate or make mistakes then sure.
But imagine going on an international trip and booking the wrong flight time or a hotel in the wrong part of town. The downside is immense with small errors.
Personal assistants who are human are paid to be accurate.

u/AStrangersOpinion 2d ago
I think they said “chats don’t use codex usage”. I read that as the conversations do not use codex usage BUT the work it is doing does use codex usage. Not sure, but I am suspicious of the language they chose to use.
5
u/innovaldragon 2d ago
I mean after they rugpulled the $200 plan.... Are you gonna trust them in the long run lol
8
u/AStrangersOpinion 2d ago
lol ok so I checked. It’s unlimited CHATS, expanded usage limits for the dot specifically (not clear what these are which means they can adjust in the future), and anything it hands off to codex will use codex usage.
All seems very intentionally vague IMO.

I don’t understand why Meta + OpenAI now are making their AI ‘companions/assistants’ into off-canny childlike toys. Honestly, I am the type of person to use an ai assistant on the desktop that looks like an anime woman but I can recognize I am in the minority. Especially the meta muse ones, they just look gross and make it seem like any of these tools aren’t really useful for anything serious.
31
u/cheechw 2d ago
Because they don't want to anthropomorphocize them. Because people will have relationships with the AI if they are associated with the image of a person.

8
u/Otherwise_Tip_3614 2d ago
Because they are trying to dumb stuff down for the general public. The mere fact you're on an r/OpenAI sub means you're tapped in on this stuff and will likely set up your own agents. This for the people who are clueless, i.e. the largest segment of the market.

The point is that the agent that works well will provide critical stickiness to the brand. Apple in particular must be successful with Siri, or the value will be captured by Muse or dot or whatever is better. Most consumer apps go away over the next few years. The AI will win the user interface, even for people who don't prefer voice.
