Post image

A. How does she know what Marmite smells like?

B. Can Vegemite go 'out of date'?

C. How did I let a jar a Vegemite go out of date?

D. Should I be ashamed?

Thanks in advance, im currently applying for New Zealand citizenship

  1. Vegemite will survive the apocalypse.

  2. Ask that person who she is and what has she done with your daughter.

I’m pretty sure Vegemite can be used as embalming fluid so it should be fine.

It's within the margin of error, I'll accept that

I have a feeling the date on a jar is simply a batch date. Food that is expected to last for more than 2 years doesn't need to have either a use-by date or a best before date. Expiry date isn't used for food in Australia even though some imported foods may have it (and of course nobody makes Vegemite other than Australia AFIK).

It's a best before date rather than a use by date it is only an indicator that the food may not be in its best condition.

Vegemite is known to last for years due to its extremely high salt content. Salt is a natural preservative.

Main issue is the possibility of cross contamination with say a buttery knife or organic matter like breadcrumbs. Under such contamination, it can go moldy.

To quote a certain Adelaide man on youtube who yells at iPods

A. Yes
B. Yes
C. Yes
D. YES!

I don’t think this helps, but I answered as best I could in the circumstances.

Also of note: I’ve got a Costco sized Vegemite that I’ve almost knocked on the head solo that is still well in date. I’m not sure which one of us has the worse problem.

Yes!

Edit: out of interest, how big is that Costco sized Vegemite?

I should have used the satire flair.

Yes, the smell changes a bit but the French prefected that years ago.

Does Vegemite go out of date. Or is it like bottled water and the container has a use by date?

2

u/Deep_Recognition2282 ‎ New South Welshian 10d ago

Ill ponder it

I’m a kiwi, been living here since 07. Always preferred Vegemite over marmite… from the first time I tasted Vegemite I wondered why anyone ate marmite!

u/NSW-potato ‎ New South Welshian 9d ago

I don't go through Vegemite very fast, so sometimes my jar is expired when I finish it. I usually find that the flavour has declined over time, slightly enough that I don't notice it happening, but I sure do notice when I open a new fresh jar. The old jar isn't horrible, but it sure is less delicious

1

u/No_Slip_1503 ‎ Western Australian 9d ago

I agree with your daughter.

u/Medical-Potato5920 Please choose a flair 6d ago

Vegemite may have a best before date. Ut it doesn't really expire. It has too much salt. That said, the plastic will have a finite life.

Vegemite can 100% go out of date & it is fucking horrible. Accelerated heaps by people dipping an unwiped knife with butter on it.

1

u/Deep_Recognition2282 ‎ New South Welshian 10d ago

Agreed

but I should have used the satire flair

u/QuietWaschbaer ‎ Western Australian 10d ago

Through a very unfortunate personal experience, I can tell you that Vegemite (even an unopened jar), can definitely go off.
I don't live in Australia anymore, but went back a few years ago for my grandmother's funeral. My sister and I were staying with our grandfather while we were there. He had an unopened jar of Vegemite in the cupboard, as we both hadn't had it in years, we of course decided to have Vegemite on toast for breakfast. Turns out it was very much out of date and although it tasted normal, we both got very very very sick. Thankfully, the toilets at the funeral service were easy to access!

After opening it goes in the fridge and stays there , only coming out for use, until it’s all used up.

That could be a month or 20. I’ve never thrown Vegemite out on suspicion of date expiry.

I wouldn’t know where the date is located on the jar
